Duke University head swimming and diving coach Dan Colella <\/strong>announced Friday the addition of nine student-athletes to the program ahead of the 2017-18 academic year.<\/p>\n

Connie Dean<\/strong>, Halle Morris<\/strong>, Carly Perri<\/strong> and Ellie Winslow<\/strong> will bolster the women\u2019s swimming and diving roster while Nathaniel Hartley<\/strong>, Spencer LaFata<\/strong>, Zach Washart<\/strong>, Teddy Zeng<\/strong> and Adam Zimmer<\/strong> are set to join the men\u2019s team.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis freshman class is smaller than we\u2019ve had in the past, but it\u2019s a very talented group of individuals who have a tremendous amount of potential,\u201d Colella said. \u201cThese men and women have achieved some pretty significant swimming and diving already in their careers. Each of them demonstrates the kind of character and skills we\u2019re looking for in Duke student-athletes and we\u2019re really thrilled to have them join the Duke family.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nColella on Dean: <\/strong>\u201cConnie\u2019s specialty is the IMs and she\u2019s also a magnificent breaststroker. She\u2019s someone who is going to provide a great boost to our IM events \u2013 both the 200 and 400 IM. Connie has great potential to achieve significant feats both at the conference and NCAA levels.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nColella on Perri: <\/strong>\u201cCarly specializes in the butterfly and mid-distance free. I could see her adding some firepower to the 800 free relay. We\u2019ll be looking to her to bring some depth to an already strong butterfly core as well.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nHead Diving Coach Nunzio Esposto on Winslow: <\/strong>\u201cEllie comes from the Ohio State Diving Club, which is a relatively large club. She did well as a junior diver. I\u2019m excited to see her transition into a college athlete and I\u2019m looking forward to teaching her a 10-meter platform list. That\u2019s one of our goals for her. She\u2019s very strong and I think she\u2019s going to be a great addition to the team.\u201d<\/p>\n

Right now we see his primary events being backstroke but he\u2019s very skilled in the other strokes. I can see him having a future in the IMs. He has a lot of untapped potential and we\u2019re anticipating him growing into a leadership-type position in his events.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nColella on LaFata: <\/strong>\u201cSpencer is coming off of a great U.S. Open. He is going to provide some additional strength in the distance events. We\u2019ll be working to determine what his third event will be outside of the 500 and the mile. He\u2019s shown some potential in the backstrokes. Spencer is a really outgoing individual who, from the moment he arrived on campus, seemed to really fit in. I think it\u2019s going to be a great experience for him here at Duke University.\u201d<\/p>\n

I knew that I wanted to attend medical school in the future and I thought that I would have a lot of great opportunities to do that at Duke. Another major factor was the swimming program, which I was sold on as soon as I came to visit the campus. The team\u2019s drive and general atmosphere was exactly what I was looking for in my college swimming experience, which played a major part in my decision to come to Duke.\u201d
\nColella on Washart: <\/strong>\u201cZach, like Spencer, is adding some substantial depth in the distance freestyle events. I think Duke University is a great fit for Zach in terms of having a great complement of academics and athletics. We\u2019re looking forward to seeing how he\u2019ll thrive here both in and out of the pool.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nEsposto on Zeng: <\/strong>\u201cTeddy is originally from Hong Kong, pretty established as a diver when he was young. I think that he gets better and better as he travels up the boards \u2013 one-meter, three-meter and of course platform. He competed in the 2012 World Cup in London so I\u2019m excited for him to get back up on platform and see what he can bring to Duke.\u201d<\/p>\n

Having finaled at the meet provides some experience that is going to help him really excel at the collegiate level.\u201d<\/p>\n
