The fifth morning of preliminary competition at the FINA World Junior Championships in Indianapolis saw Italy’s\u00a0Nicolo Martinenghi<\/strong> lower his own championship record in the prelims of the men’s 50 breast, while Japan’s\u00a0Rikako Ikee\u00a0<\/strong>qualified for the semis in two separate events.<\/p>\n

Multiple World Junior Records could fall in the evening finals, and read about some of those chances in the specific event sections below.<\/p>\n

Men’s 100 Free<\/h3>\n

Brazil’s\u00a0Breno Correia\u00a0<\/strong>topped prelims of the men’s 100 free with his 49.79 in the final heat, while Spain’s\u00a0Alex Ramos\u00a0<\/strong>took second in 49.80. Also breaking 50 were Japan’s\u00a0Hayata Ito\u00a0<\/strong>and Poland’s\u00a0Bartosz Piszczorowicz<\/strong>, who tied for third in 49.96.<\/p>\n

Hours after anchoring his team to a stunning win in the 800 free relay, Hungary’s\u00a0Nandor Nemeth\u00a0<\/strong>qualified fifth in 50.02, with Venezuela’s\u00a0Alberto Mestre\u00a0<\/strong>(50.14), France’s\u00a0Maxime Grousset\u00a0<\/strong>(50.16) and Great Britain’s\u00a0Elliot Clogg\u00a0<\/strong>(50.18) rounding out the top eight.<\/p>\n

The USA’s\u00a0Daniel Krueger\u00a0<\/strong>qualified ninth for semis in 50.22, one spot ahead of 200 free World Junior Champion\u00a0Ivan Girev\u00a0<\/strong>of Russia (50.39). Krueger’s American teammate\u00a0Mattheew Willlenbring\u00a0<\/strong>tied for 13th in 50.48, while Canada’s\u00a0Rusian Gaziev<\/strong>, a two-time gold medalist this week on mixed relays, was the last man in at 50.50.<\/p>\n

\"men-100-free\"<\/p>\n

Women’s 100 Fly<\/h3>\n

Japan’s\u00a0Rikako Ikee\u00a0<\/strong>qualified first in the women’s 100 fly in her first of two events on the morning. She posted a 58.93 before getting out to prepare for her swim in the 50 free prelims. Ikee, the 50 fly gold medalist already in Indianapolis, finished six hundredths ahead of Canada’s\u00a0Rebecca Smith<\/strong> (58.93).<\/p>\n

Great Britain’s\u00a0Emily Large<\/strong>, the 200 fly gold medalist, took third in 59.25, while 200 fly silver medalist\u00a0Suzuka Haswgawa\u00a0<\/strong>of Japan was fifth in 59.61. Splitting the difference was 100 and 200 back champion\u00a0Regan Smith<\/strong>, who will continue her busy week with a 100 fly semi-50 back final double in the evening session.<\/p>\n

Canada’s\u00a0Mabel Zavaros\u00a0<\/strong>(59.68) and Sweden’s\u00a0Sara Junevik<\/strong> (59.90) rounded out the list of swimmers breaking the 1:00-barrier. Russia’s\u00a0Polina Egorova\u00a0<\/strong>took eighth in 1:00.26.<\/p>\n

Spain’s Ana Lamberto<\/strong>\u00a0took 16th at 1:01.41 to round out the semi-finalists.\u00a0Emma Carlton<\/strong> of the USA missed out by two spots, finishing in 1:01.50.<\/p>\n

\"women-100-fly\"<\/p>\n

Men’s 400 IM<\/h3>\n

Already a silver medalist in the men’s 200 IM, the United States’\u00a0Kieran Smith<\/strong> took the top seed in the men’s 400 IM, touching in a final time of 4:20.46. He was followed closely by Hungary’s\u00a0Marton Barta<\/strong>, who cruised home to a final time of 4:20.57, and just two hundredths back was Great Britain’s\u00a0Nathan Hughes\u00a0<\/strong>(4:20.59).<\/p>\n

Spain’s\u00a0Hugo Gonzalez<\/strong>, already a gold medalist in the 100 back and silver medalist in the 100 back, took fourth in 4:21.04, and a second Hungarian made the final as\u00a0Balazs Hollo\u00a0<\/strong>qualified fifth in 4:21.35. Great Britain’s\u00a0Brodie Williams\u00a0<\/strong>(4:21.59), Poland’s\u00a0Marcel Wagrowski<\/strong> (4:22.68) and Argentina’s\u00a0Santiago Berfliaffa\u00a0<\/strong>(4:23.02) also made it back.<\/p>\n

Eric Knowles<\/strong>, the other American in the race, ended up 10th at 4:23.37.<\/p>\n

\"men-400-im\"<\/p>\n

Women’s 50 Free<\/h3>\n

The United States’\u00a0Grace Ariola\u00a0<\/strong>continued her busy schedule of events with the 50 free prelims, and she qualified first for semi-finals in 25.15. After three straight sessions of only one race each, Ariola’s schedule tightens up again in finals, as she should swim in the 50 free semis, 50 back final and then the 400 free relay final in the span of about 45 minutes.<\/p>\n

Japan’s\u00a0Rikako Ikee\u00a0<\/strong>returned to the pool after qualifying first in the 100 fly prelims, and Ikee qualified second for the semis in 25.37, two hundredths ahead of Germany’s\u00a0Angelina Kohler\u00a0<\/strong>(25.37).<\/p>\n

Canada’s\u00a0Kayla Sanchez<\/strong>, already the silver medalist in the 200 IM and bronze medalist in the 100 free, was fourth in 25.44, followed by Denmark’s\u00a0Julie Jensen\u00a0<\/strong>(25.47) and the Czech Republic’s\u00a0Barbora Seemanova\u00a0<\/strong>(25.56).<\/p>\n

100 free World Junior Champion\u00a0Freya Anderson<\/strong> took seventh for Great Britain in 25.59, and rounding out the top ten qualifiers were Japan’s\u00a0Sayuki Ouchi<\/strong> (25.63), Slovenia’s\u00a0Neza Klancar<\/strong> (25.79) and the USA’s\u00a0Kate Douglass\u00a0<\/strong>(25.81).<\/p>\n

The last swimmer in was Germany’s\u00a0Isabel Gose\u00a0<\/strong>at 26.15.<\/p>\n

\"women-50-free\"<\/p>\n

Men’s 50 Breast<\/h3>\n

Italy’s\u00a0Nicolo Martinenghi<\/strong> broke the championship record in prelims, touching in 27.21 to lower the previous mark of\u00a027.48 that he set on the way out in the 100 breast earlier in the week.<\/p>\n

Martinenghi’s Italian teammate\u00a0Alessandro Pinzuti\u00a0<\/strong>qualified second in 27.48, and third went to the USA’s\u00a0Michael Andrew\u00a0<\/strong>in 27.51. The 50 breast will be the toughest of the four stroke 50s for Andrew to win, given the presence of Martinenghi. He has already won gold in the 50 free and 50 back, and he is heavily favored in the upcoming 50 fly final.<\/p>\n

Russia’s\u00a0Vladislav Gerasimenko<\/strong> took third in 27.91, while the USA’s\u00a0Reece Whitley<\/strong>, bidding to win a medal in all three breaststroke events, was fifth in 28.28.<\/p>\n

Others finishing in the top eight were Germany’s\u00a0Philipp Brandt\u00a0<\/strong>(28.29), South Africa’s\u00a0Michael Houlie\u00a0<\/strong>(28.32) and Canada’s\u00a0Gave Mastromatteo<\/strong> (28.35). Qualifying 16th for the final spot into the semis was Tunisia’s\u00a0Adnan Beji<\/strong> (28.86).<\/p>\n

\"men-50-breast\"<\/p>\n

Women’s 400 Free Relay<\/h3>\n

Canada, bidding for its fourth win in a women’s or mixed relay in four tries, finished on top of this relay in prelims in 3:42.74 with\u00a0Faith Knelson\u00a0<\/strong>(57.00),\u00a0Taylor Ruck\u00a0<\/strong>(54.98),\u00a0Penny Oleksiak\u00a0<\/strong>(55.71) and\u00a0Kayla Sanchez<\/strong> (55.05).<\/p>\n

But with Ruck and Oleksiak capable of 52-second legs and\u00a0Rebecca Smith\u00a0<\/strong>set to replace Knelson in the final, Canada should crush the World Junior Record of 3:39.87.<\/p>\n

The American team of\u00a0Julia Cook\u00a0<\/strong>(55.99),\u00a0Kate Douglass\u00a0<\/strong>(56.45),\u00a0Alex Walsh\u00a0<\/strong>(55.14) and\u00a0Kelly Pash\u00a0<\/strong>(55.66) qualified second in 3:43.24. It appears that Cook and Walsh will join\u00a0Grace Ariola\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Lucie Nordmann\u00a0<\/strong>on the relay in finals.<\/p>\n

Russia’s\u00a0Katarina Milutinovich<\/strong>,\u00a0Polina Nevmovenko<\/strong>,\u00a0Polina Osipenko<\/strong> and\u00a0Irina Krivonogova\u00a0<\/strong>took third in 3:34.40. Also making the final were Australia (3:44.17), Japan (3:45.83), Germany (3:46.10), Brazil (3:49.20) and South Africa (3:55.55).<\/p>\n

Women’s 1500 Free<\/h3>\n

Australia’s\u00a0Lani Pallister\u00a0<\/strong>recorded the top time in the slower heats of the women’s mile, checking in at 16:32.59. Next up were Spain’s\u00a0Andrea Galisteo\u00a0<\/strong>(16:44.98) and\u00a0Slovenia’s\u00a0Katja Fain<\/strong> (16:48.40).<\/p>\n
