Also breaking 50 were Japan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Hayata Ito\u00a0<\/strong>and Poland&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Bartosz Piszczorowicz<\/strong>, who tied for third in 49.96.<\/p>\n<p>Hours after anchoring his team to a stunning win in the 800 free relay, Hungary&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Nandor Nemeth\u00a0<\/strong>qualified fifth in 50.02, with Venezuela&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Alberto Mestre\u00a0<\/strong>(50.14), France&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Maxime Grousset\u00a0<\/strong>(50.16) and Great Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Elliot Clogg\u00a0<\/strong>(50.18) rounding out the top eight.<\/p>\n<p>The USA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Daniel Krueger\u00a0<\/strong>qualified ninth for semis in 50.22, one spot ahead of 200 free World Junior Champion\u00a0<strong>Ivan Girev\u00a0<\/strong>of Russia (50.39). She posted a 58.93 before getting out to prepare for her swim in the 50 free prelims. Ikee, the 50 fly gold medalist already in Indianapolis, finished six hundredths ahead of Canada&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Rebecca Smith<\/strong> (58.93).<\/p>\n<p>Great Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Emily Large<\/strong>, the 200 fly gold medalist, took third in 59.25, while 200 fly silver medalist\u00a0<strong>Suzuka Haswgawa\u00a0<\/strong>of Japan was fifth in 59.61. Splitting the difference was 100 and 200 back champion\u00a0<strong>Regan Smith<\/strong>, who will continue her busy week with a 100 fly semi-50 back final double in the evening session.<\/p>\n<p>Canada&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Mabel Zavaros\u00a0<\/strong>(59.68) and Sweden&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Sara Junevik<\/strong> (59.90) rounded out the list of swimmers breaking the 1:00-barrier. He was followed closely by Hungary&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Marton Barta<\/strong>, who cruised home to a final time of 4:20.57, and just two hundredths back was Great Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Nathan Hughes\u00a0<\/strong>(4:20.59).<\/p>\n<p>Spain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Hugo Gonzalez<\/strong>, already a gold medalist in the 100 back and silver medalist in the 100 back, took fourth in 4:21.04, and a second Hungarian made the final as\u00a0<strong>Balazs Hollo\u00a0<\/strong>qualified fifth in 4:21.35. The 50 breast will be the toughest of the four stroke 50s for Andrew to win, given the presence of Martinenghi. He has already won gold in the 50 free and 50 back, and he is heavily favored in the upcoming 50 fly final.<\/p>\n<p>Russia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Vladislav Gerasimenko<\/strong> took third in 27.91, while the USA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Reece Whitley<\/strong>, bidding to win a medal in all three breaststroke events, was fifth in 28.28.<\/p>\n<p>Others finishing in the top eight were Germany&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Philipp Brandt\u00a0<\/strong>(28.29), South Africa&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Michael Houlie\u00a0<\/strong>(28.32) and Canada&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Gave Mastromatteo<\/strong> (28.35). It appears that Cook and Walsh will join\u00a0<strong>Grace Ariola\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Lucie Nordmann\u00a0<\/strong>on the relay in finals.<\/p>\n<p>Russia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Katarina Milutinovich<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Polina Nevmovenko<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Polina Osipenko<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Irina Krivonogova\u00a0<\/strong>took third in 3:34.40.
