During the fourth morning of competition at the FINA World Junior Championships in Indianapolis, American\u00a0Michael Andrew\u00a0<\/strong>qualified first for the semi-finals of the men’s 50 fly in championship record-time to be the first of four U.S. top qualifiers for the semis.<\/p>\n

Also scoring the top spot in the morning were teammates\u00a0Daniel Roy\u00a0<\/strong>in the men’s 200 breast and\u00a0Alex Walsh\u00a0<\/strong>in the women’s 200 IM.\u00a0Reece Whitley\u00a0<\/strong>made it a U.S. 1-2 with Roy in the breaststroke, and the U.S. men were also dominant in the 800 free relay prelims.<\/p>\n

Full results<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

Women’s 50 Back<\/h3>\n

Canada’s\u00a0Jade Hannah<\/strong>, already a bronze medalist in the 100 back, qualified first for semi-finals in the one-lap race in 28.24, but American\u00a0Regan Smith<\/strong>, who only needs to win the 50 to complete a backstroke sweep, qualified second in 28.43.<\/p>\n

Just behind Smith were Japan’s\u00a0Natsumi Sakai\u00a0<\/strong>(28.44), Great Britain’s\u00a0Cassie Wild\u00a0<\/strong>(28.45) and Russia’s\u00a0Polina Egorova\u00a0<\/strong>(28.45).\u00a0Grace Ariola<\/strong>, Smith’s American teammate, took sixth in 28.55.<\/p>\n

Others qualifying under 29 included Denmark’s\u00a0Julie Jensen\u00a0<\/strong>(28.76), Great Britain’s\u00a0Anna Maine\u00a0<\/strong>(28.77) and Italy’s\u00a0Tania Quaglieri\u00a0<\/strong>(28.96). The cut-off point to make the semi-finals was 29.58.<\/p>\n

\"women-50-back\"<\/p>\n

Men’s 50 Fly<\/h3>\n

Michael Andrew\u00a0<\/strong>continued his assault on the men’s 50-meter events in Indianapolis, setting a championship record in the 50 fly prelims. He came up just a tenth short of\u00a0Li Zhuhao’s\u00a0<\/strong>World Junior Record of 23.39 set back in 2015. The 50 fly semis will come as part of a very busy finals session for Andrew Saturday night, with the 50 back final proceeding these semis and the 50 free final following.<\/p>\n

Russia’s\u00a0Andrei Minakov\u00a0<\/strong>qualified second in 23.94, and Kazakhstan’s\u00a0Adibek Mussin\u00a0<\/strong>qualified third in 23.96.<\/p>\n

The remainder of the top eight included Germany’s\u00a0Luca Armbruster\u00a0<\/strong>(24.05), Italy’s\u00a0Alberto Razzetti\u00a0<\/strong>(24.26), Egypt’s\u00a0Abdelrahman Sameh\u00a0<\/strong>(24.28), China’s\u00a0Shen Jiahao\u00a0<\/strong>(24.33) and\u00a0Turkey’s\u00a0Umitcan Gures\u00a0<\/strong>(24.37).<\/p>\n

Hungary’s\u00a0Kristof Milak<\/strong>, the gold medalist and WJR-holder in the 100 fly, took 11th in prelims in 24.41 to book his spot in semis, while Poland’s\u00a0Kamil Kazmierczak\u00a0<\/strong>was the last man in at 24.88.<\/p>\n

The USA’s\u00a0Nick Albiero\u00a0<\/strong>and Bulgaria’s\u00a0Antani Ivanov\u00a0<\/strong>tied for 17th at 24.91, setting up a possible swim-off for first alternate.<\/p>\n

\"men-50-fly\"<\/p>\n

Women’s 400 Free<\/h3>\n

Russia’s\u00a0Anastasiia Kirpichnikova\u00a0<\/strong>picked up the top seed with the only mark under 4:13. She came in at 4:12.54, while Japan’s\u00a0Waka Kobori\u00a0<\/strong>was second in 4:13.08. Argentina’s\u00a0Delfina Pignatiello<\/strong>, the gold medalist from the 800 free Thursday night, took third in 4:13.42.<\/p>\n

Australia’s\u00a0Sharni Robinson\u00a0<\/strong>qualified fourth in 4:13.75, while top-seeded Hungarian\u00a0Ajna Kesely\u00a0<\/strong>ended up with the fifth-best time of 4:13.87.<\/p>\n

Also making the final were Australia’s\u00a0Molly Batchelor\u00a0<\/strong>(4:14.25), the USA’s\u00a0Leah Braswell\u00a0<\/strong>(4:14.96) and Spain’s\u00a0Esther Morillo\u00a0<\/strong>(4:15.13).<\/p>\n

\"women-400-free\"<\/p>\n

Men’s 200 Breast<\/h3>\n

The United States claimed the top two seeds for the men’s 200 breast final, with\u00a0Daniel Roy<\/strong> leading the way in 2:11.72 and\u00a0Reece Whitley\u00a0<\/strong>claiming second in 2:11.86. The two swim with contrasting styles, with Whitley going long and strong the whole way and Roy coming home strong, and the two will face off in a 200 breast for the first time ever in the final.<\/p>\n

Japan’s\u00a0Ikuma Osaki<\/strong> qualified third in 2:12.17, followed by Australia’s\u00a0Zac Stubblety-Cook<\/strong> (2:12.43) and Austria’s\u00a0Valentin Bayer\u00a0<\/strong>(2:12.67).<\/p>\n

Italy’s\u00a0Nicolo Martinenghi<\/strong>, already the World Junior Champion in the 100 breast and the World Junior Record-holder in both the 50 and 100-meter distances, made the jump up to the 200 as he qualified sixth in 2:12.56, and the Czech Republic’s\u00a0Filip Chrapavy<\/strong> (2:13.32) and\u00a0Japan’s\u00a0Yu Hanaguruma\u00a0<\/strong>(2:13.34) claimed the last two spots in the final.<\/p>\n

\"men-200-breast\"<\/p>\n

Women’s 200 IM<\/h3>\n

Alex Walsh\u00a0<\/strong>of the United States pulled ahead of her heat on the freestyle leg and recorded the fastest qualifying time of the final in 2:13.80, edging out Canada’s\u00a0Kayla Sanchez<\/strong>. Sanchez recorded a time of 2:13.88, the only other mark under 2:14.<\/p>\n

Great Britain’s\u00a0Ciara Schlosshan<\/strong>\u00a0took third in 2:14.36, and France’s\u00a0Cyrielle<\/strong>\u00a0Duhamel\u00a0<\/strong>qualified third in 2:14.69. The USA’s\u00a0Zoe Bartel<\/strong>, already qualified for the 100 breast final, had the fastest split on that leg on her way to qualifying fifth in 2:14.83.<\/p>\n

Other finalists included Japan’s\u00a0Miku Kojima\u00a0<\/strong>(2:14.84), Great Britain’s\u00a0Amy Bell\u00a0<\/strong>(2:15.73) and Germany’s\u00a0Julia Mrozinski<\/strong> (2:15.92).<\/p>\n

\"women-200-im\"<\/p>\n

Men’s 800 Free Relay<\/h3>\n

The American men put on an impressive performance in the prelims of the men’s 800 free relay.\u00a0Jack LeVant\u00a0<\/strong>(1:48.75),\u00a0Cody Bybee\u00a0<\/strong>(1:49.43),\u00a0Carson Foster\u00a0<\/strong>(1:48.03) and\u00a0Drew Kibler\u00a0<\/strong>(1:48.43) finished in 7:14.84 to qualify first by more than two seconds for the final.<\/p>\n

The World Junior Record of 7:13.76 should be on high alert in the evening as\u00a0Michael Brinegar\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Trey Freeman<\/strong>, who finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 200 free, join the squad.<\/p>\n

Spain’s\u00a0Cesar Castro<\/strong>,\u00a0Alex Ramos<\/strong>,\u00a0Javier Villanueva\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Francisco Arevalo\u00a0<\/strong>qualified second in 7:17.23, and Russia’s\u00a0Petr Zhikharev<\/strong>,\u00a0Mikhail Bocharnikov<\/strong>,\u00a0Maksim Aleksandrov\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Martin Malyutin<\/strong> were third in 7:15.57. 200 free World Junior Champion\u00a0Ivan Girev\u00a0<\/strong>will join Russia’s squad at night.<\/p>\n

Other finalists included Australia (7:@0.60), Hungary (7:22.68), Poland (7:22.97), Germany (7:25.40) and Brazil (7:25.79).<\/p>\n
