SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, July 5. WITH the loss of 10 student-athletes to graduation, the University of Utah swimming and diving program have signed seven student-athletes to National Letters of Intent for the 2011-12 season. The following women will join Utah's swimming and diving roster this fall: <\/p>\n
Jasmine Matkovic
\nHailing from Wellington Point in Queensland, Australia, Matkovic will graduate from Moreton Bay College and join the Utes in the fall as a diver. She started diving in 2008 with the Chandler Diving Club under the direction of Ethan Warren. In 2010, Matkovic finished in the top three in the 1-meter and 3-meter dives, thus earning the opportunity to compete at the 2010 Junior Elite Nationals in Perth, where she finished 15th overall.<\/p>\n
Maddie Jamora
\nGraduating with a 3.9 GPA from Kapolei High School, Jamora will be joining the Utes in the freestyle and backstroke events. During her senior year, the Hawaii native won the OIA West Championship, the OIA Championship, and the HHSAA State Championship titles in the 50 free and the 100 back. In March, Jamora competed at the 2011 Western Region Speedo Championships, where she placed 25th overall in the 50 free. Jamora also swam for the Hawaii Swimming Club. <\/p>\n
LeighAnne Oliver
\nOliver, a native of Tucson, Ariz., trained with Ford Aquatics under coach Kevin Milak and also swam for Sabino High School. She is considered one of the best swimmers in Arizona in distance freestyle and breaststroke events, being listed as Southern Arizona's top performer and an All-Star in 2010. Oliver won state titles in the 500 free, 100 breast, as well as the 400 free relay that she anchored during her senior year. <\/p>\n
Treasa Ring
\nThe Roseville, Minn., native transfers from the University of Idaho to Utah this fall as a sophomore to swim butterfly and sprint freestyle events. A six-time letter winner, five-time All-American, and four-time All-State winner while attending Roseville Area High School, Ring went on to qualify for Junior Nationals and the U.S. Open Championships. While swimming under Tom Jager at Idaho, Ring set the Idaho women's record in the 100 fly. In September 2010, the Aquajets Swim Team in Minnesota welcomed Ring as their development coach for the season. <\/p>\n
Melissa Paakh
\nNamed Miss Northwest in 2010, Paakh will join the Utes as a butterfly swimmer. In November, she became the first Detroit Lakes High School female swimmer to win a Minnesota High School League State title in the 100 fly. She also had a fourth-place finish in the 200 IM at the state championships. At Detroit Lakes, Paakh swam for head coach Carol McCarthy. <\/p>\n
Nick Soedel
\nExpected to make an immediate impact on sprints and relays for Utah, Soedel is an All-American freestyle sprinter from Marina High School in Orange County, Calif. He has been ranked No. 2 in sprinting events in Orange County. Soedel has been training with the Golden West Swim Team under the direction of Bob Gillett. He also played water polo at Marina.<\/p>\n
Winter Heaven
\nComing to Utah from Kenai, Alaska, Heaven started setting Alaska state records when he was 15 years old and currently holds seven state records, including the 100 and 200 free and fly. He swims under head coach Will Hubler and Judy Lallier with the Peninsula Piranhas' Swim Team. Heaven was selected to swim in Delhi, India for the 2010 Common Wealth Games. At the 2011 Western Region Speedo Championships, Heaven ranked 28th in both the 100 and 200 free events. <\/p>\n
