GLASGOW, Scotland, July 1. THE second day of long course competition at the Scotland nationals featured wins by reigning world champion Mireia Belmonte of Spain and world record holder Rebecca Adlington.<\/p>\n
Belmonte took the women's 200 individual medley in 2:13.87, well off her third-ranked world time of 2:10.26 from the Spanish nationals in April. Belmonte wasn't challenged throughout the race, as Emily Jones placed a distant second in 2:18.34, while Marina Garcia of Spain was third in 2:18.61.<\/p>\n
Rebecca Adlington continues to hone her form as she prepares to swim her world-record event, the 800 freestyle, at the world championships. Adlington was in clear control of the race, winning in 8:23.46. Though she has been faster this year with an 8:20.23, no one has swum faster in the event this year than Adlington did today. Li Xuanxu is ranked second in the world with an 8:23.96. Belmonte placed second in 8:30.94, three seconds off her best time of the year, while Megan Gilchrist finished third in 8:38.96.<\/p>\n
Robbie Renwick, who had just been named to the British world championship team three weeks ago, won the men's 400 freestyle in 3:52.03. Renwick secured his spot on the world team with a 3:48.60 at the ASA nationals that puts him 12th in the world. Lewis Smith led for most of the race, but fell off in the final 50 meters to place second in 3:52.57. Josh Walsh finished third in 3:54.03.<\/p>\n
After finishing third in the 200 IM, Marina Garcia returned to win the women's 100 breaststroke with a 1:09.79. Kerry Buchan was well back in second with a 1:11.15, while Emma Bird rounded out the podium with a 1:11.31.<\/p>\n
Guilherme Guido of Brazil out-touched Juan Miguel Rando of Spain to win the men's 100 backstroke title, 55.55 to 55.61. Craig McNally was third with a 57.13.<\/p>\n
Georgia Hohmann won the women's 200 backstroke in 2:11.92, while Natasha Hofton placed second in 2:13.31. Katie Avramova finished third in 2:14.09.<\/p>\n
Iain McMillan posted the only 200 butterfly time under two minutes today, winning in 1:58.89. Andrew Mayor just missed breaking the barrier with a second-place time of 2:00.16, and Calum McGhee placed third in 2:05.66.<\/p>\n
Georgina Heyn took the women's 50 freestyle title in 25.93. Maria Fuster of Spain was second in 26.12, while Jessica Sylvester took third in 26.32.<\/p>\n
Douglas Scott won a close race in the men's 50 breast in 28.89, with Georgios Syrianos placing second with a 28.92. Joseph Welstead placed third with a 28.97.<\/p>\n
