HALMSTAD, Sweden, July 1. THE third day of long course competition at the Swedish long course nationals was highlighted by a victory in the women's 50 free by national star Therese Alshammar. Reports claim the weather for the outdoor event is slightly overcast with temperatures in the low 60s Fahrenheit. <\/p>\n
Alshammar posted a 24.59 in the sprint event, which was not too far off her fastest time of the year, a 24.47 swum at the Canet stop of the Mare Nostrum tour last month. Second place went to Sarah Sjostrom with a 25.05, and Michelle Coleman placed third with a 25.73.<\/p>\n
The men's 200 breast started the evening's finals, with Anton Lagerqvist taking the title in 2:16.77. Erik Persson claimed silver in 2:18.44, while Johan Johansson was third in 2:18.70.<\/p>\n
Lars Frolander, the Olympic champion in the 100 fly in 2000, won his pet event in 53.85. Simon Sjodin took second with a 54.34, and David Larsson was third in 54.91.<\/p>\n
Sarah Thyden won the women's 200 IM with a 2:15.01, holding off a challenge by Ida Marko-Varga, who placed second in 2:15.21. Stina Gardell, a freshman at the University of Southern California, was third in 2:15.29.<\/p>\n
Mattias Carlsson won the men's 100 backstroke with a 57.31. Kristian Kron won the silver with a 57.89, and Martin Nilsson took the bronze in 58.07.<\/p>\n
Gabriella Faqundez won the women's 1500 freestyle in 17:24.61. Ellen Olsson took second in 17:28.71, with Josefine Hippi placing third with a 17:30.74.<\/p>\n
The SK Neptun team of Pontus Flodgvist, Petter Stymne, Simon Sjodin and Paul Gordon won the men's 400 free relay with a time of 3:24.25. Lass was second in 3:26.37, and Taby Sim was third in 3:27.53.<\/p>\n
