Japan’s\u00a0Rikako Ikee\u00a0<\/strong>swam in her first individual event during the second morning of prelims at the 2017 FINA World Junior Championships, while Russia scored top qualifying marks in two men’s events, with\u00a0Egor Kuminov\u00a0<\/strong>in the 100 fly and\u00a0Ivan Girev\u00a0<\/strong>in the 200 free.<\/p>\n

    Men’s 200 IM<\/h3>\n

    Kieran Smith<\/strong> of the United States dropped more than a second and a half off his best time to qualify first for the eight-man final. His time of 2:00.15 was more than six tenths ahead of the rest of the field. Germany’s\u00a0Johanns Hintze\u00a0<\/strong>qualified second in 2:00.79, just ahead of American\u00a0Michael Andrew\u00a0<\/strong>(2:00.92).<\/p>\n

    Andrew will swim in two championship finals in the evening session, with the 100 breast scheduled to go off just 18 minutes before the 200 IM.<\/p>\n

    Brazil’s\u00a0Caio Pumputis<\/strong>, a soon-to-be Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket, qualified fourth in 2:01.58, and he was followed by Italy’s\u00a0Alberto Razzetti\u00a0<\/strong>(2:01.91), Hungary’s\u00a0Marton Barta\u00a0<\/strong>(2:02.35), Spain’s\u00a0Hugo Gonzalez\u00a0<\/strong>(2:02.77) and China’s\u00a0Ziqi Deng\u00a0<\/strong>(2:02.82).<\/p>\n

    \"men-200-im\"<\/p>\n

    Women’s 100 Free<\/h3>\n

    Japan’s\u00a0Rikako Ikee\u00a0<\/strong>kicked off her individual event program with the 100 free, and she recorded the top-seeded time by some four tenths of a second, touching in 54.41. Ikee, the World Junior Record-holder in the 50 free, 50 fly and 200 IM, will also compete in both 50s as well as the 100 fly this week.<\/p>\n

    Canada’s\u00a0Rebecca Smith<\/strong> qualified second behind Ikee in 54.84, and Great Britain’s\u00a0Freya Anderson\u00a0<\/strong>also broke 55 in qualifying third, touching in 54.38. The Czech Republic’s\u00a0Barbora Seemanova\u00a0<\/strong>was fourth in 55.22, followed by Smith’s teammate\u00a0Kayla Sanchez\u00a0<\/strong>(55.25).<\/p>\n

    Russia’s\u00a0Vasilissa Buiaia\u00a0<\/strong>finished sixth in 55.39, and Americans\u00a0Lucie Nordmann\u00a0<\/strong>(55.54) and\u00a0Grace Ariola\u00a0<\/strong>(55.70) were seventh and eighth, respectively.<\/p>\n

    Qualifiers nine through 16 for the semi-finals included Slovakia’s\u00a0Neza Kiancar\u00a0<\/strong>(55.85), Denmark’s\u00a0Julie Jensen\u00a0<\/strong>(56.01), Australia’s\u00a0Eliza King\u00a0<\/strong>(56.15), Japan’s\u00a0Sayuki Ouchi\u00a0<\/strong>(56.16), Brazil’s\u00a0Camila Mello\u00a0<\/strong>(56.21), Germany’s\u00a0Isabel Gose\u00a0<\/strong>(56.61), Turkey’s\u00a0Selen Ozbilen\u00a0<\/strong>(56.70) and Italy’s\u00a0Maria Masciopinto\u00a0<\/strong>(56.78).<\/p>\n

    Men’s 100 Fly<\/h3>\n

    Russia’s\u00a0Egor Kuminov\u00a0<\/strong>easily topped the field with his time of 52.38, with Estonia’s\u00a0Kregor Zirk<\/strong> joining him under 53 seconds with a time of 52.38. But looming in third is Hungary’s\u00a0Kristof Milak<\/strong>, the World Championships silver medalist and World Junior Record-holder (50.62). Milak qualified third in 53.07.<\/p>\n

    Fourth went to\u00a0Jan Friese\u00a0<\/strong>of Germany in 53.10, and he was followed by China’s\u00a0Shen Jiahao\u00a0<\/strong>(53.28), Japan’s\u00a0Shinnousuke Ishikawa\u00a0<\/strong>(53.28), Great Britain’s\u00a0Jacob Peters\u00a0<\/strong>(53.32) and Australia’s\u00a0Jordan Brunt\u00a0<\/strong>(53.36) to round out the top eight.<\/p>\n

    Japan’s\u00a0Yuka Sakamoto\u00a0<\/strong>claimed ninth in 53.38, and Russia’s\u00a0Andrei Minakov\u00a0<\/strong>(53.51), Italy’s\u00a0Federico Burdisso\u00a0<\/strong>(53.55) and Turkey’s\u00a0Umitcan Gures\u00a0<\/strong>(53.61) took 10th through 12th.<\/p>\n

    Americans\u00a0Nicholas Albiero\u00a0<\/strong>(53.70) and\u00a0Drew Kibler\u00a0<\/strong>(53.85) cut it close, but both got into the semis, qualifying 13th and 15th, respectively. Belarus’\u00a0Antani Ivanov\u00a0<\/strong>took 14th in 53.83, and Brazil’s\u00a0Matheus Gonche\u00a0<\/strong>tied Kibler for 15th to round out the semi-finalists.<\/p>\n

    \"men-100-fly\"<\/p>\n

    Women’s 200 Fly<\/h3>\n

    Japan’s\u00a0Suzuka Hasegawa<\/strong>, who holds the World Junior Record in the 200 fly at 2:08.10, qualified first in prelims in 2:09.90, just edging out the 2:09.94 that Great Britain’s\u00a0Emily Large\u00a0<\/strong>had recorded in the previous heat.<\/p>\n

    Canada’s\u00a0Mabel Zavaros\u00a0<\/strong>finished third in 2:10.57, and another Briton,\u00a0Keanna Macinnes<\/strong>, took fourth in 2:10.87.<\/p>\n

    China’s\u00a0Ye Hulyan\u00a0<\/strong>(2:11.59), Hungary’s\u00a0Boglarka Bonecz\u00a0<\/strong>(2:12.11), Germany’s\u00a0Julia Mrozinski\u00a0<\/strong>(2:12.60) and Canada’s\u00a0Victoria Kwan\u00a0<\/strong>(2:12.83) also made the final.<\/p>\n

    For the first time all meet, an American swimmer missed out on advancing, and in fact both did.\u00a0Madison Homovich\u00a0<\/strong>finished 10th in 2:13.07, and\u00a0Ashlyn Fiorili\u00a0<\/strong>took 12th in 2:14.61.<\/p>\n

    \"women-200-fly\"<\/p>\n

    Men’s 200 Free<\/h3>\n

    Six swimmers broke 1:49 in the men’s 200 free prelims, but only one man was under 1:48: Russia’s\u00a0Ivan Girev<\/strong>, who won his heat in 1:47.65. American\u00a0Patrick Callan<\/strong>, meanwhile, won the final hat in 1:48.02, holding off Hungary’s\u00a0Nandor Nemeth\u00a0<\/strong>(1:48.10) at the finish.<\/p>\n

    Another Hungarian,\u00a0Richard Marton<\/strong>, qualified fourth in 1:48.48, just ahead of Australia’s\u00a0Elijah Winnington\u00a0<\/strong>(1:48.52). American\u00a0Trey Freeman<\/strong>, the bronze medalist in the 400 free, qualified sixth in 1:48.92, and the last two swimmers to make the final were Brazil’s\u00a0Breno Correia\u00a0<\/strong>(1:49.06) and Great Britain’s\u00a0Elliot Clogg\u00a0<\/strong>(1:49.30).<\/p>\n

    Mixed 400 Medley Relay<\/h3>\n

    Canada, already a relay winner on night one in the women’s 800 free relay, qualified first in the mixed 400 medley relay with\u00a0Jade Hannah\u00a0<\/strong>(1:00.43),\u00a0Gabe Mastromatteo\u00a0<\/strong>(1:01.45),\u00a0Mabel Zavaros\u00a0<\/strong>(59.43) and\u00a0Rusian Gaziev\u00a0<\/strong>(49.93).\u00a0Taylor Ruck\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Penny Oleksiak\u00a0<\/strong>will each be available to come onto the relay squad in the final.<\/p>\n

    The United States qualified second in 3:52.09.\u00a0Lucie Nordmann\u00a0<\/strong>(1:01.66),\u00a0Daniel Roy\u00a0<\/strong>(1:01.31),\u00a0Cody Bybee\u00a0<\/strong>(53.24) and\u00a0Julia Cook\u00a0<\/strong>(55.88) competed in prelims, but the squad could be overhauled before the final. Russia’s\u00a0Anastasiia Avdeeva<\/strong>,\u00a0Vladislav Gerasimenko<\/strong>, Sofya Lobova\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Gleb Karasev\u00a0<\/strong>qualified third in 3:53.91.<\/p>\n

    Other teams making the final included Great Britain\u00a0(3:53.97), Ireland (3:54.12), Germany (3:54.26), Italy (3:54.27) and Brazil (3:54.80).<\/p>\n

    Women’s 800 Free<\/h3>\n

    In the early heats of the women’s 800 free, American\u00a0Chase Travis\u00a0<\/strong>posted the top time at 8:39.56, ahead of Australia’s\u00a0Leah Pallister\u00a0<\/strong>(8:39.86) and Spain’s\u00a0Andrea Galisteo\u00a0<\/strong>(8:40.31). The top heat will be swum with finals.<\/p>\n
