PHOENIX, Arizona, June 30. THE Australian short course championships started last night with distance events, and gets underway later today with preliminary races in a few notable events. The women's 100 free will feature 15-year-old Yolane Kukla in what will likely be her final race before she prepares to swim in her first world championships, as well as Libby Trickett, who is the short course world record holder in the event and is attempting to get back into form for next year's Olympic Trials.<\/p>\n
Four of the men going to Shanghai in the 400 free relay will race today in the 100 freestyle: James Magnussen, Eamon Sullivan, Matt Abood and Kyle Richardson. Richardson, as you will remember, got his spot on the relay by winning a time trial yesterday.<\/p>\n
Leisel Jones is also using the meet as a final racing tuneup before heading to the world championships. She'll race in the 100 breast today and will also be in the 50 breast on Sunday.<\/p>\n
Nick D'Arcy will headline the men's 200 fly. D'Arcy beat Michael Phelps in the long course version of the event two weeks ago in Santa Clara and could put up a time that will be a benchmark when the short course season kicks in around the world in a few months.<\/p>\n
