PHOENIX, Arizona, June 29. MARIEKE Guehrer upstaged Libby Trickett earlier today in a special swimoff in Adelaide, Australia, to pick an alternate for the women's 400 free relay at the world championships. Trickett was using the swim as her first official competition since announcing her comeback nine months ago. Guehrer beat Trickett and six other swimmers to the wall with a 54.29, which gives her a ticket to Shanghai and would have also placed her second at the world championship trials in April. But Guehrer won't get to do the individual 100 free in Shanghai. Those spots still go to Alicia Coutts and Yolane Kukla. Reports are indicating that with the selection to the world team, Guehrer will get the chance now to defend her world title in the 50 fly from 2009.<\/p>\n
As for Trickett, she'll be racing again this weekend at the Australian short course championships. She told the media at the time trial that she was happy with the way she executed the swim and looks forward to more work in preparation for the Olympic Trials.<\/p>\n
Kyle Richardson was the only swimmer in the men's time trial to break 49 seconds in the 100 free, getting his spot on the relay with a time of 48.89. Richardson was a part of the 400 free relay that won gold at the Commonwealth Games last fall.<\/p>\n
A special time trial is being held later today in the 200 free for the open alternate spots in the men's and women's relays. The winner must swim faster than 1:48.5 in the men's 200 free and 1:57.5 in the women's event.
