﻿{"id":273805,"date":"2017-08-23T17:40:19","date_gmt":"2017-08-24T00:40:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=273805"},"modified":"2017-08-23T20:43:47","modified_gmt":"2017-08-24T03:43:47","slug":"2017-world-university-games-day-5-prelims-live-recap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/2017-world-university-games-day-5-prelims-live-recap\/","title":{"rendered":"American Women Strong on Day 5 of World University Games"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Day five of the 2017 World University Games in Taipei featured three preliminary events for both men and women.<\/p>\n<p>Japan&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?s=kosuke+hagino\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Kosuke Hagino<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0maintained his top seed in the 200 back and will look to set himself up for a second win of the week in tomorrow&#8217;s semifinals.\u00a0The American duo of <strong>Katie Drabot<\/strong> and <strong>Claire Rasmus<\/strong> then earned the top two spots in the 200 freestyle for the USA.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Russia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Aleksandr Sadovnikov<\/strong><\/strong> was able to out-swim\u00a0<strong>Henrique De Souza Martina<\/strong> of Brazil to win the the men&#8217;s 100 fly prelims while Belarus&#8217; <strong>Ilya Shymanovich<\/strong>\u00a0held on tight to his top seed in the 50 breast.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ali DeLoof <\/strong>and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?s=hannah+stevens\" target=\"_blank\">Hannah Stevens<\/a><\/strong>, also of the USA, finished first and fourth in the\u00a050 backstroke rankings while Italy&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?s=simona+quadarella\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Simona Quadarella<\/strong><\/a> and <strong>Sarah Koehler<\/strong> of Germany cruised into the 800 final\u00a0to provide another spectacular distance showdown tomorrow night.<\/p>\n<h2>Schedule of Events:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Men&#8217;s 200 Backstroke<\/li>\n<li>Women&#8217;s 200 Freestyle<\/li>\n<li>Men&#8217;s 100 Butterfly<\/li>\n<li>Women&#8217;s 50 Backstroke<\/li>\n<li>Men&#8217;s 50 Breaststroke<\/li>\n<li>Women&#8217;s 800 Freestyle<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Men&#8217;s 200 Backstroke<\/h2>\n<p>Hagino did not waste any time getting to the top this time around, as he claimed the top seed for the 200 back semis in 1:58.83. He charged home in 29.48 to swim past the American duo of <strong>Robert Owen<\/strong> (1:58.96) and <strong>Austin Katz<\/strong> (1:59.64). Owen had the fastest opening 100 in 57.65.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Danas Rapsys<\/strong> of Lithuania came home even faster than Hagino in 28.81, cruising his way into the fifth seed at 2:00.25. Russia&#8217;s <strong>Martin Binedell<\/strong> finished slightly ahead of him in 1:59.98. The remaining swimmers created a handful of close battles, including a necessary swim-off for the final qualifying spot. Italy&#8217;s <strong>Linda Capoli<\/strong> and New Zealand&#8217;s <strong>Carina Doyle<\/strong> both swam a 2:02.00 for sixteenth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Joanna Evans<\/strong> of the Bahamas took the third seed in 2:00.04 followed by <strong>Chihiro Igarashi<\/strong> of Japan (2:00.05) and Canada&#8217;s <strong>Katerine Savard<\/strong> (2:00.24) all out of heat six. Teammate <strong>Kennedy Goss<\/strong> was then sixth in 2:00.41, once again followed narrowly by Great Britain&#8217;s <strong>Kathryn Greenslade<\/strong> in 2:00.42. Russia&#8217;s <strong>Aleksandr Sadovnikov<\/strong> swam the fastest race of the morning heats in 52.43, out the fastest in 24.02. Teammate <strong>Aleksandr Kudashev<\/strong> tied for thirteenth with USA&#8217;s <strong>Zach Harting<\/strong> in 53.29.<\/p>\n<p>Ukraine&#8217;s <strong>Andrii Khloptsov<\/strong> was third in 52.52, as teammate <strong>Oleksii Ivanov<\/strong> was fifth in 52.80. De Souza Martins split the top men at 52.51 for the second seed. Hungary&#8217;s <strong>Bence Pulai<\/strong> had the best second fifty in 27.79 to come in fourth with a 52.62.<\/p>\n<p>Japan&#8217;s <strong>Yuki Kobori<\/strong> was sixth in 52.85, USA&#8217;s <strong>Justin Lynch<\/strong> took seventh in 52.89 and Poland&#8217;s <strong>Michal Poprawa<\/strong> was eighth in 53.00. Teammate Hannah Stevens was fourth in 28.58. She was beaten in heat six by Russia&#8217;s <strong>Mariia Kameneva<\/strong> (28.31) while DeLoof out-swam Poland&#8217;s <strong>Alicja Tchorz<\/strong> in heat five (28.45).<\/p>\n<p>Netherlands&#8217; <strong>Kira Toussaint<\/strong> was fifth in 28.66 and was followed by Italy&#8217;s <strong>Carlotta Zofkova<\/strong> (28.78), Japan&#8217;s <strong>Anna Konishi<\/strong> and Australia&#8217;s <strong>Sian Whittaker<\/strong>, both in 28.79. He was followed by Germany&#8217;s <strong>Fabian Schwingenschloeg<\/strong>, who took the fourth spot in 27.62. Her 8:32.0 was enough to hold off USA&#8217;s <strong>Hannah Moore<\/strong> who finished in 8:33.00. Great Britain&#8217;s <strong>Camilla Hattersley<\/strong> was next in 8:35.19. All three women raced near-even splits, but it was clear that Koehler has a lot more left in the tank for the final based on how she came home in the last 100 meters.<\/p>\n<p>Quadarella earned the fourth seed in 8:35.70 and was followed by\u00a0Liechtenstein&#8217;s <strong>Julia Hassler<\/strong> in 8:36.01 and Australia&#8217;s <strong>Kiah Melverton<\/strong> in 8:36.21.
