{"id":273775,"date":"2017-08-23T16:44:57","date_gmt":"2017-08-23T23:44:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=273775"},"modified":"2021-05-25T19:13:12","modified_gmt":"2021-05-26T02:13:12","slug":"canada-scorches-womens-800-free-relay-world-junior-record","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/canada-scorches-womens-800-free-relay-world-junior-record\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada Scorches Women&#8217;s 800 Free Relay World Junior Record"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Women&#8217;s 800 Free Relay FINAL<\/h3>\n<p>Just a few events after\u00a0<strong>Taylor Ruck<\/strong> posted an individual<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/taylor-ruck-lowers-100-back-world-junior-record-regan-smith-flirts-with-nag-record\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> World Junior Record in the 100 back,<\/a> the young Olympian was back and anchoring the Canadian women&#8217;s 800 free relay with similar results.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kayla Sanchez<\/strong> led off for the Canadians with a split of 1:59.01, touching second behind Russia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Irina Krivonogova<\/strong> and her split of 1:58.61. Russia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Polina Nevmovenko<\/strong> dove in as the first of the second relay legs, but was no match for Olympic gold medalist\u00a0<strong>Penny Oleksiak<\/strong> as she charged to a split of 1:56.86. <strong>Rebecca Smith<\/strong> continued Oleksiak&#8217;s power through the third leg, delivering a split of 1:58.66 before transitioning to anchor leg Ruck. Ruck split a 1:56.94 en route to Canada&#8217;s first gold of the meet and a final time of 7:51.47.<\/p>\n<p>Their combined time scorched Australia&#8217;s World Junior Record (WJR) of 7:56.68, which doubled as the Championship record, set in Singapore at the 2015 FINA World Junior Championships.<\/p>\n<p>Russia&#8217;s relay team of Krivonogova (1:58.61), Nevmovenko (2:00.50),\u00a0<strong>Vasilissa Buinai<\/strong> (2:00.37), and\u00a0<strong>Anastasiia Kirpichnikova<\/strong> (1:57.85) finished second overall with a time of 7:57.33.<\/p>\n<p>The foursome of\u00a0<strong>Waka Kobori<\/strong> (2:00.53),\u00a0<strong>Rikako Ikee<\/strong> (1:56.54),\u00a0<strong>Sayuki Ouchi<\/strong> (2:01.11), and\u00a0<strong>Suzuka Hasegawa<\/strong> (2:03.91) finished third overall with a combined time of 8:02.09, followed closely by the USA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Lucie Nordmann<\/strong> (2:00.12),\u00a0<strong>Miranda Heckman<\/strong> (2:02.39),\u00a0<strong>Regan Smith<\/strong> (1:59.87), and\u00a0<strong>Kelly Pash<\/strong> (2:00.02) and their time of 8:02.40.<\/p>\n<p>Hungary finished fifth overall with a time of 8:03.70, just ahead of Spain&#8217;s sixth\u00a0place time of 8:07.26.<\/p>\n<p>Germany picked up seventh with a time of 8:08.78, while Italy suffered a disqualification due to an early take-off by the second
