﻿{"id":273603,"date":"2017-08-23T10:45:43","date_gmt":"2017-08-23T17:45:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=273603"},"modified":"2017-08-23T10:45:43","modified_gmt":"2017-08-23T17:45:43","slug":"elementary-schoolers-filling-the-stands-at-world-junior-championships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/elementary-schoolers-filling-the-stands-at-world-junior-championships\/","title":{"rendered":"Elementary Schoolers Filling the Stands at World Junior Championships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By David Rieder.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>When <strong>Andrew Abruzzo<\/strong> dove in for his 400 free heat at the FINA World Junior Championships, he already had a legion of fans\u2014hundreds of local elementary school students who had never heard of him and who had never been to a major swim meet.<\/p>\n<p>All week long, various school groups from the Indianapolis area will take field trips to the IUPUI Natatorium to watch different morning sessions. The kids inject some energy into otherwise-quiet morning sessions, but there\u2019s also an educational component attached.<\/p>\n<p>Classes from different schools were assigned to learn about particular countries competing at the World Junior Championships, including China, Romania, Italy and others. Still, when it came to the kids\u2019 rooting interests, those were decidedly domestic.<\/p>\n<p>Abruzzo was the first American to race all meet, and as soon as the students saw the stars and stripes flag pop up on the scoreboard, they knew they were fans. Some didn\u2019t even know which lane was the \u201c4\u201d where Abruzzo was racing, not that it mattered. The chants of \u201cU-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A!\u201d got loud in the stretch of sections where the students were sitting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re very excited because most of them have never seen anything like this or a pool this size before,\u201d said <strong>Peggy<\/strong> <strong>Storey<\/strong>, a third-grade teacher at Robert Lee Frost Elementary School.<\/p>\n<p>The students had plenty to cheer about when Abruzzo won his heat and then teammate <strong>Trey Freeman<\/strong> won the final heat to qualify first for the final. At that point, the only two events she had seen were the men\u2019s 400 free and women\u2019s 50 breast.<\/p>\n<p>And why did she enjoy cheering for the Americans so much?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause they\u2019re from the greatest country ever.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By David Rieder.
