Day one featured four men&#8217;s preliminaries and three women&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>Hungary&#8217;s <strong>Akos Kalmar<\/strong> came in as the top seed in the 400 freestyle, but American <strong>Trey Freeman III<\/strong> took top honors this time around. Ireland&#8217;s <strong>Conor Ferguson<\/strong> won a tight 100 backstroke prelim, while Italy&#8217;s <strong>Nicolo\u00a0Martinenghi<\/strong>\u00a0set the first meet record of the week in the 100 breast.<\/p>\n<p>In the women&#8217;ts events, USA&#8217;s <b>Emily Weiss\u00a0<\/b>stole the show as\u00a0the only swimmer to dip under 31 seconds in the 50 breast prelims. Japan&#8217;s <strong>Miku Kojima<\/strong>\u00a0maintained her top seed in the 400 IM, while USA&#8217;s <strong>Regan Smith<\/strong> swam a blistering 59.52 100 backstroke to break a meet record of her own.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/results\/pdf\/2017-fina-world-junior-championships-day-1-prelims-day-1-usa-senior-national-2017-08-23.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">FULL RESULTS FROM DAY 1 PRELIMS CAN BE FOUND HERE<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Schedule of Events:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Men&#8217;s 400 Freestyle<\/li>\n<li>Women&#8217;s 50 Breaststroke<\/li>\n<li>Men&#8217;s 100 Backstroke<\/li>\n<li>Women&#8217;s 400 IM<\/li>\n<li>Men&#8217;s 100 Breaststroke<\/li>\n<li>Women&#8217;s 100 Backstroke<\/li>\n<li>Men&#8217;s 400 Freestyle Relay<\/li>\n<li>Women&#8217;s 800 Free Relay<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Men&#8217;s 400 Freestyle<\/h2>\n<p>The American men kicked things off to a great start for the USA, winning both the sixth and seventh heats for the first and third seeds overall. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?s=Trey+Freeman\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Trey Freeman III<\/strong><\/a> claimed the overall top time of 3:51.32 after a close battle with <strong>Francisco Arevalo Rubio<\/strong> of Spain (3:52.11). South Africa&#8217;s <strong>Jarryd Baxter<\/strong> (3:53.01) and Australia&#8217;s <strong>Jacob Vincent<\/strong> (3:53.18) also qualified for the final out of heat seven.<\/p>\n<p>USA&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?s=andrew+abruzzo\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Andrew Abruzzo<\/strong><\/a> stole the third seed in 3:52.20 and was followed closely in heat six by Hungary&#8217;s <strong>Balazs Hollo<\/strong> (3:52.41), Poland&#8217;s <strong>Antoni Kaluzynski<\/strong> (3:52.45) and Australia&#8217;s <strong>Nathan Robinson<\/strong> (3:52.87). His prelim swim of 54.95 gave him the top seed by just .01, exactly how much Ryan won by as well. Romania&#8217;s <strong>Daniel Martin<\/strong> was right behind in 54.96 out of heat seven. Russia&#8217;s <strong>Nikita Tretyakov<\/strong>\u00a0was third in 55.14 while Spain&#8217;s Hugo Gonzalez had a the fastest second 50 in the field of 28.24 to help him earn the fourth position in 55.26. Coming in as the top seed, it is likely that Gonzalez has a lot more left in the tank for the semis and final.<\/p>\n<p>Poland&#8217;s <strong>Kacper Stowkowski<\/strong> (55.42), USA duo <strong>Nicolas Albiero<\/strong> (55.44) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?s=drew+kibler\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Drew Kibler<\/strong><\/a> (55.51) and Great Britain&#8217;s <strong>Nicholas Pyle<\/strong> (55.72) placed fifth through eighth. Her breaststroke split set her apart from second-place <strong>Anja Crevar<\/strong> of Serbia who finished in 4:45.08. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?s=christin+rockway\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Christin Rockway<\/strong><\/a> of USA was not far behind with a 4:46.23.\u00a0Also of Japan, <strong>Anna Sasaki<\/strong>\u00a0had one of the faster breaststroke splits as well to help her earn the fourth spot in 4:46.31.<\/p>\n<p>USA&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?s=madison+homovich\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Madison Homovich<\/strong><\/a> placed fifth with the fastest backstroke split and a 4:46.67 overall, while Spain&#8217;s <strong>Laia Fernandez<\/strong> blasted a 1:18.51 third leg to power her to sixth in 4:47.04. The only swimmer to break 1:00, Martinenghi raced to a 59.53 for the win. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?s=reece+whitley\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Reece Whitley<\/strong><\/a> led a strong American effort with a 1:00.41 for the second seed. Teammate Michael Andrew was fourth in 1:00.91. Australia&#8217;s <strong>Zac Stubblety-Cook<\/strong> split the Americans with a 1:00.75. Her 59.52 out of heat six was enough to out-race Canada&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?s=taylor+ruck\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Taylor Ruck<\/strong><\/a> (59.64) and break the previous meet record set in 2015. Teammate <strong>Jade Hannah<\/strong> earned the fourth spot in 1:00.21 while American <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?s=grace+ariola\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Grace Ariola<\/strong><\/a> was fifth in 1:00.67. Japan&#8217;s <strong>Natsumi Sakai<\/strong> broke up the North American contingent with her third-place swim of 1:00.11<\/p>\n<p>Smith&#8217;s strong front 50 gave her the advantage this time around as she was the only swimmer out under 29 seconds. Ruck had the best closing speed in 30.48.<\/p>\n<p>Great Britain duo <strong>Cassie Wild<\/strong> (1:00.84) and <strong>Anna Maine<\/strong> (1:01.30) placed sixth and eighth while Russia&#8217;s <strong>Polina Egorova<\/strong> was seventh in 1:01.19. Correia was the lone swimmer out of all three heats to split under 40, setting up the Brazilians for victory early on. Germany&#8217;s team of <strong>Johannes Hintze<\/strong>, <strong>Paul Reither<\/strong>, <strong>Peter Varjasi<\/strong> and <strong>Josha Salchow<\/strong> combined for second place in 3:19.93.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Russia led a tight battle for third in 3:20.07.
