The swimming portion of the 2017 World University Games opened Sunday morning in Taipei with seven individual events and two relays, and Americans claimed the top seeds in four total races.<\/p>\n

Justin Ress\u00a0<\/strong>(men’s 100 back),\u00a0Andrew Wilson<\/strong> (men’s 100 breast),\u00a0Asia Seidt\u00a0<\/strong>(women’s 200 back) and the women’s 400 free relay team all stood out during the first morning.<\/p>\n

Men’s 400 Free<\/h3>\n

Great Britain’s\u00a0Jay Lelliott<\/strong> posted the No. 1 qualifying mark in the meet’s first event, recording a time of 3:48.30 to top Russia’s\u00a0Mykhalio Romanchuk<\/strong> by almost a half second. Romanchuk came in at 3:48.73.<\/p>\n

Ukraine’s\u00a0Sergii Frolov\u00a0<\/strong>qualified third in 3:49.67, while the United States’\u00a0Mitch D’Arrigo<\/strong> (3:49.84) and New Zealand’s\u00a0Matt Hutchins\u00a0<\/strong>(3:49.93) also broke 3:50. WUGs marks D’Arrigo’s first competition for the United States after previously representing Italy internationally.<\/p>\n

American\u00a0Grant Shoults\u00a0<\/strong>qualified sixth in 3:50.19, and rounding out the field for the final were Canada’s\u00a0Jeremy Bagshaw\u00a0<\/strong>(3:50.89) and Sweden’s\u00a0Adam Paulsson<\/strong> (3:51.19).<\/p>\n

\"men-400-free\"<\/p>\n

Women’s 50 Fly<\/h3>\n

Germany’s\u00a0Aleina Schmidtke\u00a0<\/strong>finished atop the 50 fly prelims in 26.29, while Canada’s\u00a0Katerine Savard\u00a0<\/strong>was just behind in 26.39. Japan’s\u00a0Kaho Okano\u00a0<\/strong>took third in 26.71, just ahead of Poland’s\u00a0Anna Dowgiert\u00a0<\/strong>in 26.75 and a tie between the Netherlands’\u00a0Kinge Zandringa\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Brazil’s\u00a0Bruna Lemos Rocha<\/strong>, both of whom were 26.78.<\/p>\n

Japan’s\u00a0Yukina Hirayama\u00a0<\/strong>took seventh in 28.84, and also breaking 27 were Great Britain’s\u00a0Rachael Kelly\u00a0<\/strong>(26.85), Brazil’s\u00a0Ferreria Lopes\u00a0<\/strong>(26.91), Italy’s\u00a0Elena De Liddo\u00a0<\/strong>(26.96) and the USA’s\u00a0Katie McLaughlin<\/strong> (26.97).<\/p>\n

Hellen Moffitt\u00a0<\/strong>of the USA took 12th in 27.00, and also qualifying for the semi-finals were Russia’s\u00a0Mariia Kameneva\u00a0<\/strong>(27.21), Belarus’ Nastassia Karakouskaya\u00a0<\/strong>(27.31),\u00a0Australia’s\u00a0Emily Washer\u00a0<\/strong>(27.39) and Italy’s Aglaia Pezzato<\/strong>\u00a0(27.41).<\/p>\n

\"women-50-fly\"<\/p>\n

Men’s 100 Back<\/h3>\n

American swimmers finished first and second in the 100 back prelims, with\u00a0Justin Ress\u00a0<\/strong>leading the way in 53.63 and\u00a0Taylor Dale\u00a0<\/strong>coming in next at 54.13. Ress was a finalist in the 50 back in his international debut last month at the FINA World Championships in Budapest.<\/p>\n

Lithuania’s\u00a0Danas Rapsys\u00a0<\/strong>took third in 54.51, and Ireland’s\u00a0Shane Ryan\u00a0<\/strong>was fourth in 54.71. Greece’s\u00a0Christou Apostolos\u00a0<\/strong>(54.78) and Australia’s\u00a0Ben Treffers\u00a0<\/strong>(54.82) were the next two qualifiers, followed by Japan’s\u00a0Kosuke Hagino<\/strong>. Hagino, the Olympic gold medalist in the 400 IM, posted a time of 54.96.<\/p>\n

Canada’s\u00a0Markus Thormeyer\u00a0<\/strong>finished eighth in 55.04, and the other semi-final qualifiers included Russia’s\u00a0Roman Larin\u00a0<\/strong>(55.21), Israel’s\u00a0David Gamburg\u00a0<\/strong>(55.23), Hungary’s\u00a0Galor Balog\u00a0<\/strong>(55.32), Russia’s\u00a0Andrei Shabasov\u00a0<\/strong>(55.46), Japan’s\u00a0Shuhei Uno<\/strong> (55.48), Belarus’\u00a0Mikita Tsmyh<\/strong> (55.49), Poland’s\u00a0Tomasz Polweka\u00a0<\/strong>(55.72) and Canada’s\u00a0Robert Hill<\/strong> (55.75).<\/p>\n

\"men-100-back\"<\/p>\n

Women’s 400 IM<\/h3>\n

Japan’s\u00a0Yui Ohashi<\/strong>, the silver medalist in the 200 IM from the World Championships, paced the field in the 400-meter event at WUGs, recording the top overall qualifying time with her 4:40.82.<\/p>\n

Finishing just behind her in her heat were\u00a0Ally McHugh<\/strong> of the United States (4:41.47) and\u00a0Sarah Darcel\u00a0<\/strong>of Canada (4:41.90), and those times turned out to be good for No. 2 and No. 3 overall, respectively.<\/p>\n

Hungary’s Reka Gyorgy\u00a0<\/strong>qualified fourth in 4:43.52, and the USA’s\u00a0Brooke Forde\u00a0<\/strong>took fifth in 4:43.73. Other finalists will include the Czech Republic’s\u00a0Barbora Zavadova\u00a0<\/strong>(4:43.82), Italy’s\u00a0Carlotta Toni<\/strong> (4:43.91) and South Korea’s\u00a0Kim Seoyeong\u00a0<\/strong>(4:44.30).<\/p>\n

\"women-400-im\"<\/p>\n

Men’s 100 Breast<\/h3>\n

Andrew Wilson\u00a0<\/strong>of the United States dominated the field in the 100 breast prelims, throwing down a time of 59.69 to beat out everyone else by eight tenths of a second. Wilson currently ranks 18th in the world for the event at 59.65, a time he swam at U.S. Nationals in June.<\/p>\n

Switzerland’s\u00a0Yannick Kaser\u00a0<\/strong>qualified second in 1:00.47, ahead of Russia’s\u00a0Rustam Gadirov\u00a0<\/strong>(1:00.61) and Belarus’\u00a0Ilya Shymanovich\u00a0<\/strong>(1:00.62). Kazakhstan’s\u00a0Dimitriy Balandin<\/strong>, the Olympic gold medalist in the 200 breast, was fifth in 1:00.76.<\/p>\n

Japan’s\u00a0Ryuya Mura\u00a0<\/strong>finished sixth in 1:01.12, and rounding out the top ten finishers were Poland’s\u00a0Marcin Stolarski<\/strong> (1:01.22), Canada’s\u00a0Elijah Wall\u00a0<\/strong>(1:01.27), Lithuania’s\u00a0Andrius Sidlauskas\u00a0<\/strong>(1:01.29) and Brazil’s\u00a0Rodriguez De Oliveira<\/strong> (1:01.32).<\/p>\n

The remainder of the semi-finalists were Italy’s\u00a0Andrea Toniato\u00a0<\/strong>(1:01.34), the USA’s\u00a0Jacob Montague\u00a0<\/strong>(1:01.36), Japan’s\u00a0Mamoru Mori\u00a0<\/strong>(1:01.43), South Korea’s Kim\u00a0<\/strong>Jaeyoun\u00a0<\/strong>(1:01.47), Ireland’s\u00a0Darragh Greene\u00a0<\/strong>(1:01.56) and Brazil’s\u00a0Felipe Kage Monni<\/strong> (1:01.67).<\/p>\n

Women’s 200 Back<\/h3>\n

The United States’\u00a0Asia Seidt\u00a0<\/strong>picked up the top seed in the women’s 200 back, recording a time of 2:10.41 to edge out Australia’s\u00a0Sian Whittaker<\/strong>, who came in second at 2:10.55.<\/p>\n

Canada’s\u00a0Alexia Zevnik<\/strong>, who recently completed her NCAA eligibility at NC State, qualified third in 2:11.20, and fourth went to Seidt’s USA and Kentucky teammate,\u00a0Bridgette Alexander<\/strong>, in 2:11.69.<\/p>\n

Italy’s\u00a0Margherita Panziera\u00a0<\/strong>(2:11.69), Japan’s\u00a0Mayuko Goto\u00a0<\/strong>(2:11.93) and Canada’s\u00a0Mackenzie Glover\u00a0<\/strong>(2:11.94) also broke 2:12, and Germany’s\u00a0Lisa Graf\u00a0<\/strong>was next best in 2:12.85.<\/p>\n

Others making the semi-finals included Poland’s\u00a0Alicja Tchorz<\/strong> (2:13.12), Russia’s\u00a0Irina Prikhodko<\/strong> (2:13.27), Poland’s\u00a0Klaudia Nazieblo\u00a0<\/strong>(2:14.18), the Czech Republic’s\u00a0Vera Koprivova\u00a0<\/strong>(2:14.64), Switzerland’s\u00a0Martina Van Berkel\u00a0<\/strong>(2:15.01), Japan’s\u00a0Anna Konishi\u00a0<\/strong>(2:15.07), Germany’s\u00a0Nadine Laemmler\u00a0<\/strong>(2:15.10) and the Netherlands’\u00a0Tessa Vermeulen\u00a0<\/strong>(2:15.29).<\/p>\n

Men’s 50 Fly<\/h3>\n

Ukraine’s\u00a0Andrii Govorov\u00a0<\/strong>took the top seed in the men’s 50 fly with his time of 23.52, and he ended up two tenths ahead of the rest of the field. Japan’s\u00a0Shunichi Nakao\u00a0<\/strong>qualified second in 23.74, and\u00a0Brazil’s\u00a0Guilherme Rosolen\u00a0<\/strong>was third in 23.76.<\/p>\n

Tying for fourth were Russia’s\u00a0Aleksandr Sadovnikov\u00a0<\/strong>and Brazil’s\u00a0Henrieuq De Souza Martins\u00a0<\/strong>in 23.79, and others under 24 seconds included Russia’s\u00a0Andrey Zhilkin<\/strong> (23.86), Ukraine’s\u00a0Andrii Khloptsov\u00a0<\/strong>(23.87), Belarus’\u00a0Yahor Dodaleu\u00a0<\/strong>(23.96) and Poland’s\u00a0Konrad Czerniak<\/strong> (23.97).<\/p>\n

Israel’s\u00a0Marcus Schlesinger\u00a0<\/strong>(24.05), Australia’s\u00a0Brayden McCarthy\u00a0<\/strong>(24.08), Japan’s\u00a0Nao Horomura\u00a0<\/strong>(24.09), South Africa’s\u00a0Zane Waddell\u00a0<\/strong>(24.16), Italy’s\u00a0Andrea Vergani\u00a0<\/strong>(24.21) and the USA’s\u00a0Justin Lynch\u00a0<\/strong>(24.25) also secured their spots in the semi-finals.<\/p>\n

There was a tie for 16th between the Czech Republic’s\u00a0Jan Sefl\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Ireland’s\u00a0Conor Brines<\/strong>, with both men stopping the clock in 24.26. That set up a swim-off to determine the last spot in the semis.<\/p>\n

Brines ended up winning that swim-off over Sefl, 24.07 to 24.17<\/p>\n

\"men-50-fly\"<\/p>\n

Women’s 400 Free Relay<\/h3>\n

The American women posted the top time in the 400 free relay prelims as\u00a0Claire Rasmus\u00a0<\/strong>(55.50),\u00a0Katrina Konopka\u00a0<\/strong>(55.20),\u00a0Katie Drabot\u00a0<\/strong>(55.37) and\u00a0Katie McLaughlin<\/strong> (55.23) combined to swim a time of 3:41.30. The U.S. should remain favorites for the final when\u00a0Veronica Burchill<\/strong> and\u00a0Caroline Baldwin\u00a0<\/strong>join the squad.<\/p>\n

Russia’s\u00a0Mariia Baklakova<\/strong>,\u00a0Polina Lapshina<\/strong>,\u00a0Anastasia Guzhenkova\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Arina Openysheva\u00a0<\/strong>qualified second in 3:41.89, and third went to the Brazilian squad of\u00a0Larissa Martins De Olveiera<\/strong>,\u00a0Marchio Harrison<\/strong>,\u00a0Manuella Duarte Lyrio\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Daynara Lopes Ferrreira<\/strong> in 3:42.23.<\/p>\n

Italy took fourth in 3:42.34, and other qualifiers for the final included Japan\u00a0(3:42.80), Great Britain\u00a0(3:42.94), Canada (3:43.99) and France\u00a0(3:44.83).<\/p>\n

\"women-400-free-relay\"<\/p>\n

Men’s 400 Free Relay<\/h3>\n

Italy swam almost one second faster than any other country during the men’s 400 free relay prelims, with\u00a0Lorenzo Zazzeri<\/strong> (49.15),\u00a0Ivano Vendrame\u00a0<\/strong>(49.00),\u00a0Alex Di Giorgio<\/strong> (49.38) and\u00a0Alessandro Miressi<\/strong> (48.59) combining to swim a time of 3:16.12.<\/p>\n

The American men, meanwhile, qualified second in 3:17.08, and they still have an ace to play in Olympic gold medalist\u00a0Ryan Held<\/strong>, who sat out the prelims relay.\u00a0Maxime Rooney\u00a0<\/strong>(49.03),\u00a0Justin Lynch<\/strong> (48.79),\u00a0Zach Harting\u00a0<\/strong>(49.68) and\u00a0Taylor Dale\u00a0<\/strong>(49.58) comprised the AM squad.<\/p>\n

Russia’s\u00a0Nikita Korolev<\/strong>,\u00a0Sergei Fesikov<\/strong>,\u00a0Aleksei Brianskii<\/strong> and\u00a0Andrey Abruzov\u00a0<\/strong>qualified fourth in 3:17.30, just ahead of Brazil\u00a0(3:17.44) and Poland (3:17.83).<\/p>\n

Other finalists included Japan (3:18.66), Ireland (3:19.66) and South Africa (3:19.81).<\/p>\n
