Recent Duke graduate\u00a0Kevin Fraser\u00a0<\/strong>has been elected a 2017 Laureate of the Tau Beta Pi Association, making him the first to receive the distinction from any university in the state of North Carolina.<\/p>\n

A four-year letterwinner as a member of the Blue Devils\u2019 swimming and diving program, Fraser graduated from Duke\u2019s Pratt School of Engineering in May with a degree in electrical and computer engineering. He joins an elite group of only 105 Tau Beta Pi Laureates chosen nationally since 1982.<\/p>\n

Tau Beta Pi is the only engineering honor society representing the entire engineering profession. According to the organization\u2019s website, it is \u201cthe nation’s second-oldest honor society, founded at Lehigh University in 1885 to mark in a fitting manner those who have conferred honor upon their Alma Mater by distinguished scholarship and exemplary character as students in engineering, or by their attainments as alumni in the field of engineering, and to foster a spirit of liberal culture in engineering colleges.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBeing selected as a Tau Beta Pi Laureate is an absolute honor,\u201d said Fraser, who is now working in the Portfolio Analytics Group at BlackRock in New York City. \u201cDuke has always pushed me to be engaged beyond the classroom by supporting my athletic commitment and valuing involvement both on and off campus. Over the last four years, the opportunity to learn from professors, student peers and members of the greater Durham community has been an exciting and invaluable piece of my education and experience as a Blue Devil.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fraser was a recipient of Duke\u2019s Karsh International Scholarship, created to bring together top students from all over the world. He will receive his honor at the 2017 Tau Beta Pi Convention in Dearborn, Mich.,\u00a0Oct. 12-14<\/span>.<\/p>\n

A sprint freestyle and breaststroke specialist in the pool, Fraser graduated ranked fourth on the Blue Devils\u2019 all-time performance list in the 200-yard medley relay (1:26.15). He was a two-time All-ACC Academic Team selection and a four-year member of the ACC Academic Honor Roll.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re ecstatic about Kevin receiving this distinction,\u201d said Duke head swimming and diving coach\u00a0Dan Colella<\/strong>. \u201cIt\u2019s a prestigious honor and one that I know Kevin has worked incredibly hard for over four years. It\u2019s always amazing to see what a student-athlete can achieve being a part of a sport like swimming and what it involves. To be able to perform at such a high level in the classroom as well just speaks volumes to the type of student-athletes we attract here at Duke University.\u201d<\/p>\n

A native of Westmount, Quebec, Fraser also garnered Scholar All-America Honorable Mention recognition from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America as a senior.<\/p>\n
