Simon Fraser University has named Mandi Smith<\/strong> as the new assistant coach with the Clan swimming and diving program, head coach Liam Donnelly<\/strong> announced today.<\/p>\n

Smith is a nationally recognized Canadian club coach with international coaching experience. She has helped swimmers advance to Canadian junior national and para national teams as well as achieve provincial, national and world records.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are very excited to have an outstanding coach join our staff. Mandi is a proven professional who will bring a great combination of experience and energy. She is highly competitive and has a strong winning record\u201d said Donnelly.<\/p>\n

\u201cSFU is a world-class university program and I look at this as an opportunity to work with high-level athletes,\u201d said Smith.<\/p>\n

This past year Smith coached the Pacific Sea Wolves club in White Rock after eight years as head coach of Red Deer Catalina Swim Club, a year-round swim club in Alberta with 100 competitive swimmers, ranging from development to senior national athletes.<\/p>\n

Smith has experience coaching elite athletes. She was the coach of record for Canadian Para-Olympian and world record holder, Tammy Cunnington<\/strong>, and Canadian junior national team member, Rebecca Smith<\/strong>, who swam on Canada\u2019s world championship 400 mixed medley relay team.<\/p>\n

In 2014, Smith was one of five coaches nationally selected by Swim Canada to be a part of its inaugural Select Coaches Group program, a mentorship and development program for Canadian swim coaches. She was also a selected coach to the Canadian Junior national team for the 2015 FINA World Junior Swimming Championships and an Australian tour leading up to the world tournament.<\/p>\n

Smith has coached multiple provincial teams as well. Most recently, Smith was named Alberta\u2019s Junior Female Coach of the Year (2014-15) and one of Team Alberta\u2019s coaches at the 2013 Canada Summer Games and 2011 Western Canada Summer Games.<\/p>\n

Simon Fraser University is Canada\u2019s only NCAA swim program. The SFU men finished 10th overall at the 2017 NCAA Championships, while the SFU women were 23rd.<\/p>\n
