{"id":272929,"date":"2017-08-17T08:30:42","date_gmt":"2017-08-17T15:30:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=272929"},"modified":"2019-04-11T16:17:07","modified_gmt":"2019-04-11T23:17:07","slug":"team-usas-maggie-steffens-on-the-record","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/team-usas-maggie-steffens-on-the-record\/","title":{"rendered":"Team USA&#8217;s Maggie Steffens On The Record"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Michael Randazzo, Swimming World Contributor<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s been a busy week for <strong>Maggie Steffens<\/strong>, arguably the world\u2019s best female water polo player.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday it was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/water-polo-olympian-maggie-steffens-named-finalist-wsf-sportswoman-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announced<\/a> that the 24 year-old Californian was named a finalist for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenssportsfoundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Women\u2019s Sports Foundation <\/a>Sportswoman of the Year, given annually to a team sport athlete\u00a0whose performance over a 12-month span has been exceptional.<\/p>\n<p>If selected, Steffens would join Olympic teammate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ashleigh-johnson-crowned-wsf-sportswoman-of-the-year-team-category\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Ashleigh Johnson<\/strong><\/a>, winner of the 2016 WSF Sportswoman of the Year in a Team Sport award. Photo Courtesy: Beeldboot.nl\\Gertjan Kooij<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A two-time Olympic MVP (2012, 2016) on gold-winning U.S. teams and three-time NCAA champion at Stanford (2014, 2015, 2017) Steffens led the American squad that last month captured gold at the FINA World Championships.<\/p>\n<p>Following Team USA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/u-s-women-grab-2nd-straight-fina-world-championship-with-13-6-win-over-spain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">13-6 win<\/a> over Spain in the FINA title match at Budapest\u2019s <strong>Alfred Haj\u00f3s Swimming Complex<\/strong>, Steffens had noteworthy comments, including musings about her future in the sport.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>All this time and nobody\u2019s ever won a FINA Championship right after winning Olympic gold.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Well, it\u2019s definitely a very hard thing to do. You\u2019re coming from a high of 2016 and then to come back the next summer with new women, trying to create that same, incredible team that can get it done.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m very proud of this team and what we\u2019ve accomplished this summer, and when we were in that huddle at the end I said: \u201cSoak it in, ladies! One, we\u2019re in an amazing arena. And two, we\u2019re a team of firsts. And we\u2019re not afraid to keep trying to be a team of firsts. First to two goal medals, [first] to gold medal, world championship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We have that drive to face more firsts.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What happen next for Maggie Steffens?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I enjoy this moment with these incredible women. That\u2019s the best thing about water polo; you get to share it with your teammates.<\/p>\n<p>Any success or gold medal is all encompassing of the hard work and the dedication that you put towards your team.<\/p>\n<p>I just look forward to playing with these girls again and creating a team because that\u2019s what makes a gold medal so special\u2014there\u2019s people you get to share it with.<\/p>\n<p>I look forward to creating even better bonds, better relationships and making history as we move forward.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Three golds in a row\u2014is that what you\u2019re looking for?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I would love to keep playing the sport as long as I\u2019m able\u2026. Right now, it\u2019s clear I\u2019m very passionate about this sport, this team and representing USA. I\u2019m taking it a day at a time, though; Tokyo\u2019s a long way away.<\/p>\n<p>Winning a world championship is incredible; it\u2019s insane!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>What is it about the spirit of your team?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In the back of our heads there\u2019s this American pride of always striving to be your best as individuals and as a team. And to bring the best out of one another. It\u2019s like when you get a feeling that you\u2019re just flowing with your teammates. You\u2019re able to make the people around you better as you yourself are improving.<\/p>\n<p>For us, the spirit is trying to be the best team we can be because that\u2019s what makes it fun.
