KIRISHI, Russia, June 1. BEHIND two goals apiece from Lolo Silver (Long Beach, CA\/Stanford\/NYAC) and Anne Belden (Newport Beach, CA\/UCLA\/NYAC) the USA Women's National Team topped Hungary 10-8 on day two of the Kirishi Cup. Betsey Armstrong (Ann Arbor, MI\/Michigan\/NYAC) went the distance in net stopping seven shots. Team USA is back in action tomorrow with a match against Greece. <\/p>\n
Hungary got off to the great start in this one going up 2-0 in the first before Team USA broke through with a score from Belden to get on the board at 2-1. Hungary came back with a tally at the 1:13 mark and went up 3-1 going to the second quarter. The second period belonged to the United States as they rallied back and then took the lead. At the 5:58 mark a goal from Courtney Mathewson (Anaheim Hills, CA\/UCLA\/NYAC) tied the match at 3-3 and then Team USA went ahead when Heather Petri (Orinda, CA\/California\/NYAC) found the cage for a 4-3 advantage with a little over three minutes to play.<\/p>\n
Up 5-4 with less than two minutes to play in the half the United States worked their lead back up to two goals as Lauren Wenger (Long Beach, CA\/USC\/NYAC) buried a shot for a 6-4 lead going into halftime. In the third period Team USA put this one to bed with a flurry of goals to get the period started. Silver connected on two straight goals, the latter a five meter penalty shot for an 8-4 lead. Maggie Steffens (Danville, CA\/Monte Vista HS\/Diablo) would score moments later for a 9-4 lead and Team USA was in control. Hungary would try and rally scoring two of the next three goals but the United States was still in command up 10-6 going to the fourth.<\/p>\n
In the last stanza the USA offense stalled as they were held scoreless but it did not factor in the decision. The red, white, and blue were able to keep the Hungarians at bay giving up just two tallies to come away with the 10-8 victory. Team USA went 3\/11 on power plays while Hungary was 2\/6. <\/p>\n
