The pool may as well have been on fire during day two finals of the 2017 FINA World Cup stop in Eindhoven.\u00a0Mireia Belmonte\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Sarah Sjostrom<\/strong> powered to new world records in finals of the women’s 400 IM and 200 free respectively.<\/p>\n

Additional highlights from day two finals include\u00a0Chad le Clos’<\/strong> two gold medals and\u00a0Ranomi Kromowidjojo’s<\/strong> upset win over Sjsotrom in the 50 fly.<\/p>\n

Chad le Clos<\/strong> bested Russian sprint star\u00a0Vladimir Morozov<\/strong> in the 100 free final. Le Clos turned in a top time of 45.96, while Morozov settled for second with a 46.14.<\/p>\n
Italy’s\u00a0Marco Orsi<\/strong> took third overall with a time of 46.70, while the Netherlands’\u00a0Kyle Stolk<\/strong> finished fourth with a time of 47.21.<\/p>\n
Olympic champion\u00a0Kyle Chalmers<\/strong> turned in a fifth place finish of 47.24, still recovering from taking the summer off for health reasons.<\/p>\n
New Zealand’s\u00a0Daniel Hunter<\/strong> (47.45), Norway’s\u00a0Markus Lie<\/strong> (47.83), and the USA’s\u00a0Tom Shields<\/strong> (47.95) rounded out the top eight.<\/p>\n

Women’s 50 Breast<\/h3>\n
Alia Atkinson<\/strong> of Jamaica backed up her win in the 100 breast yesterday with a top showing in the 50. Atkinson powered to a time of 28.84, stopping the clock a shy .20 seconds off her own world record of 28.64 from 2016.<\/p>\n
Lithuania’s\u00a0Ruta Meilutyte<\/strong> picked up second overall with a time of 29.57, while Denmark’s\u00a0Rikke Pedersen<\/strong> rounded out the podium with a time of 30.25.<\/p>\n
Melanie Margalis<\/strong> of the USA turned in a time of 30.68, followed by Australia’s\u00a0Tessa Wallace<\/strong> and her time of 30.84.<\/p>\n
Austria’s\u00a0Lena Kreundl<\/strong> (30.85), Belgium’s\u00a0Fanny Lecluyse<\/strong> (30.89), and the Netherlands’\u00a0Kim Busch<\/strong> (31.09) were sixth through eighth.<\/p>\n

Men’s 200 Breast<\/h3>\n
Kirill Prigoda<\/strong> of Russia and\u00a0Marco Koch<\/strong> of Germany battled for first in the men’s 200 breast, finishing .47 seconds apart. Despite Koch’s attempt to narrow the gap and pull ahead, Prigoda held him off for victory and a time of 2:02.15. Koch settled for second and a time of 2:02.62.<\/p>\n
Russia’s\u00a0Anton Chupkov<\/strong> delivered a time of 2:02.83 for third overall.<\/p>\n
Nic Fink<\/strong> of the USA grabbed fourth with a time of 2:04.14, while Belarus’\u00a0Ilya Shymanovich<\/strong> earned fifth with a 2:04.19.<\/p>\n
The Netherlands’\u00a0Arno Kamminga<\/strong> (2:05.50), Japan’s\u00a0Yukihiro Takahashi<\/strong> (2:05.85), and Belgium’s\u00a0Basten Caerts<\/strong> (2:08.95) took sixth through eighth.<\/p>\n

Women’s 400 IM<\/h3>\n
The swift swims that have highlighted the summer of 2017 continued with Spain’s\u00a0Mireia Belmonte<\/strong>\u00a0delivering a shocking upset over Hungary’s\u00a0Katinka Hosszu<\/strong>\u00a0in the 400 IM.<\/p>\n
Hosszu jumped to an early lead in the race, but Belmonte narrowed the gap and pulled ahead in the breaststroke leg. The Spaniard succeeded in holding off the world champion as she powered to a new world record of 4:18.94.<\/p>\n
Belmonte’s time downs Hosszu’s 2015 world record of 4:19.46, set in Netanya, Israel. She also lowered the world cup record of 4:19.82 that Hosszu had set a slim six days ago.<\/p>\n
Hosszu settled for second overall with a time of 4:25.18, while the USA’S\u00a0Ella Eastin<\/strong> grabbed third with a time of 4:26.06.<\/p>\n
Ilaria Cusinato<\/strong> of Italy turned in a fourth place finish of 4:34.11, followed by Germany’s\u00a0Franziska Hentke’s<\/strong> 4:38.03.<\/p>\n
Belgium’s\u00a0Fanny Lecluyse<\/strong> (4:39.82), the USA’s\u00a0Kim Williams<\/strong> (4:41.04), and Switzerland’s\u00a0Martina van Berkel\u00a0<\/strong>(4:43.46) completed the top eight.<\/p>\n

Men’s 50 Back<\/h3>\n
Pavel Sankovich<\/strong> of Belarus turned in a top showing in the men’s 50 back, stopping the clock at a time of 22.84.<\/p>\n
Germany’s\u00a0Christian Erik Diener<\/strong> finished second overall with a time of 23.31, followed by Japan’s\u00a0Masaki Kaneko<\/strong> and his time of 23.55.<\/p>\n
Viktar Staselovich<\/strong> of Belarus turned in a fourth place finish of 23.63, while Australia’s\u00a0Mitchell Larkin<\/strong> grabbed fifth with a 23.80.<\/p>\n
Russia’s\u00a0Vladimir Morozov<\/strong> (23.81), Japan’s\u00a0Kosuke Matsui<\/strong> (23.96), and Russia’s\u00a0Grigory Tarasevich<\/strong> (24.04) took sixth through eighth.<\/p>\n

Women’s 100 Back<\/h3>\n
Australia’s\u00a0Emily Seebohm<\/strong> flirted with a sub-56 swim in finals of the women’s 100 back, posting a final time of 56.00 for gold.<\/p>\n
Olivia Smoliga<\/strong> of the USA finished a strong second with a time of 56.58, while Hungary’s\u00a0Katinka Hosszu<\/strong> posted a third place finish of 58.11.<\/p>\n
Colombia’s\u00a0Isabella Arcila Hurtado<\/strong> picked up fourth overall with a 58.40, followed by the Dutch duo of\u00a0Tessa Vermeulen<\/strong> (59.04) and\u00a0Marieke Tienstra<\/strong> (59.28).<\/p>\n
The USA’s\u00a0Danielle Carter<\/strong> and\u00a0Zoe Lusk<\/strong> rounded out the top eight with times of 1:01.22 and 1:01.67.<\/p>\n

Men’s 200 IM<\/h3>\n
Germany’s\u00a0Philip Heintz<\/strong> held off Russia’s\u00a0Kirill Prigoda<\/strong> in finals of the men’s 200 IM. Heintz led the race from start to finish, stopping the clock at a time of 1:53.23. Prigoda finished second overall with a time of 1:53.81.<\/p>\n
Australia’s\u00a0Clyde Lewis<\/strong> posted a time of 1:54.54 for third, followed by Hong Kong’s\u00a0Kenneth To<\/strong> and his time of 1:55.78.<\/p>\n
Kyle Stolk<\/strong> of the Netherlands grabbed fifth with a 1:56.24, just ahead of the Australian duo of\u00a0Travis Mahoney\u00a0<\/strong>(1:56.68) and\u00a0Mitchell Larkin<\/strong> (1:57.61).<\/p>\n
Arjan Knipping<\/strong> was eighth overall with a time of 1:58.79.<\/p>\n

Women’s 50 Fly<\/h3>\n
The shocking swims continued as\u00a0Ranomi Kromowidjojo<\/strong> bested world record holder\u00a0Sarah Sjostrom<\/strong> in finals of the women’s 50 fly. Kromowidjojo snuck her hands in to stop the clock a slim .01 seconds ahead of Sjostrom’s 24.55 with a 24.54.<\/p>\n
Fellow Dutchwoman\u00a0Maaike de Waard<\/strong> rounded out the podium with a time of 25.46, followed by the Australian duo of\u00a0Cate Campbell<\/strong> (25.77) and\u00a0Emilly Seebohm<\/strong> (25.81).<\/p>\n
Josien Wijkhuijs<\/strong> (25.95),\u00a0Elinore de Jong<\/strong> (25.99), and Jamaica’s\u00a0Alia Atkinson<\/strong> (26.03) were sixth through eighth.<\/p>\n

Men’s 1500 Free<\/h3>\n
Henrik Christiansen<\/strong> of Norway cruised to first in the men’s 1500 free, holding off the competition to finish first with a time of 14:26.48.<\/p>\n
Italy’s\u00a0Gabriele Detti<\/strong> picked up a close second with a time of 14:28.43, while the Netherlands’\u00a0Ferry Weertman<\/strong> rounded out the podium with a time of 14:50.27.<\/p>\n
Maarten Brzoskowski<\/strong>, also of the Netherlands, turned in a 15:08.88 for fourth place, followed by Australia’s\u00a0Jacob Hansford’s<\/strong> 15:23.33.<\/p>\n
Cook Islands’\u00a0Wesley Roberts<\/strong> (15:27.36), Austria’s\u00a0Manuel Staudinger<\/strong> (15:27.43), and\u00a0David Kuipers<\/strong> (16:16.05) were sixth through eighth.<\/p>\n

Women’s 200 Free<\/h3>\n
200 freestyle all-stars\u00a0Sarah Sjostrom<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Federica Pellegrini<\/strong>\u00a0went head-to-head, once again, in finals of the women’s 200 free. Sjostrom delivered her sixth world record of 2017 with a time of 1:50.43. Her time downs her own 2014 world record of 1:50.78.<\/p>\n
Sjostrom’s time also downs\u00a0Katinka Hosszu’s\u00a0<\/strong>world cup record of 1:51.41, set in 2014 at the Doha stop of the FINA World Cup.<\/p>\n
Pellegrini picked up second overall with a time of 1:51.63, followed by Dutchwoman\u00a0Femke Heemskerk<\/strong> and her time of 1:52.24.<\/p>\n
The USA’s\u00a0Melanie Margalis<\/strong> was fourth overall with a time of 1:53.66, while Israel’s\u00a0Andrea Murez<\/strong> took fifth with a time of 1:54.67.<\/p>\n
Australia’s\u00a0Mikkayla Sheridan<\/strong> and\u00a0Carla Buchanan<\/strong> delivered times of 1:55.74 and 1:55.93 for sixth and seventh, just ahead of the USA’s\u00a0Katie Drabot<\/strong> and her time of 1:56.72.<\/p>\n

Men’s 100 Fly<\/h3>\n
Chad le Clos<\/strong> of South Africa collected his second gold medal of the day with a top showing in the men’s 100 fly. Le Clos stopped the clock at a time of 49.09, followed closely by Italy’s\u00a0Matteo Rivolta’s<\/strong> 49.54.<\/p>\n
The USA’s\u00a0Tom Shields<\/strong> took third overall with a time of 49.70, while Belarus’\u00a0Yauhen Tsurkin<\/strong> was a fourth with a time of 50.13.<\/p>\n
Joeri Verlinden<\/strong> grabbed fifth with a time of 50.31, just ahead of a tie between Japan’s\u00a0Masayuki Umemoto\u00a0<\/strong>and Belarus’\u00a0Yahor Dodaleu<\/strong>. The two posted matching times of 51.03 for sixth.<\/p>\n
The Netherlands’\u00a0Mathys Goosen<\/strong> finished eighth with a time of 51.66.<\/p>\n
