IRVINE, California, May 28. THE second night of long course meters racing is in the books at the Speedo Grand Challenge at the William Woollett Aquatic Center. In a unique twist, only four swimmers can swim in the championship final at this meet, and the format often produces swift times.<\/p>\n
Stanford's Julia Smit upset Trojan's Katinka Hosszu in the women's 400 IM. Smit clocked 4:38.83 to match her ninth-ranked time from the Austin Grand Prix in March. The time also beat Hosszu's meet record of 4:39.89 set in 2010. Hosszu, the world champion, checked in for second at 4:45.00, while Smit's teammates Maya Dirado (4:45.28) and Andie Taylor (4:45.49) completed the final heat. Smit returned later to set a meet record in the 200 back. She posted a 2:12.72 to beat her old mark of 2:13.43 set in 2010. Dirado took second in 2:15.09, and North Coast's Kendyl Stewart grabbed third in 2:18.02.<\/p>\n
Cal's Nathan Adrian set a meet record of 22.23 to win the men's 50 free. With the swim, Adrian jumped to 12th in the world, edging compatriot Cullen Jones (22.24). He also beat Jason Lezak's meet record of 22.28 from 2009. Adrian's teammates Will Copeland and Graeme Moore clocked times of 22.57 and 22.86 to finish second and third, respectively. Stanford's David Dunford took fourth in 22.97, and Trojan's Vlad Morozov won the consolation final in 22.92 to make five swimmers under 23 seconds.<\/p>\n
Adrian's Cal teammate Tom Shields blazed the back half to a win in the men's 100 fly. Shields clocked 53.40 to distance himself from Trojan's Clement Lefert. Lefert, a French National Team swimmer, finished second in 54.18, while De Anza Cupertino's Erich Peske (54.84) and Class' Chase Bloch (55.06) also competed in the final. Trojan's Markus Rogan won the men's 400 IM in 4:19.84. Rogan completed the IM sweep after winning the 200 IM Friday. Rogan crushed Stanford's Matt Thompson, who took second in 4:26.56, while Palo Alto's Ben Hinshaw (4:31.24) and Mission Viejo's Chad La Tourette (4:36.83) completed the final heat.<\/p>\n
After swimming in two finals (200 IM and 100 breast) yesterday, Palo Alto's Jasmine Tosky won her first event of the meet in the 200 free. Tosky, a U.S. World Championships qualifier in the 800 free relay, posted a time of 2:00.00, while Stanford teammates Kate Dwelley (2:01.42) and Andi Murez (2:02.42) rounded out the top three. Novaquatics' Lindsey Engel ended up third in 2:03.25. <\/p>\n
Club de Natacion's Katerine Savard moved to 16th in the world in the women's 100 fly, winning the race in 58.48. In the process, Savard broke Natalie Coughlin's 2005 meet record of 58.92. Stanford's Felicia Lee took second in 59.88, just ahead of Tosky's 59.93. Trojan's Lyndsay De Paul posted a 1:00.76 for third.<\/p>\n
Trojan's Alex Lendrum won the men's 200 back in 2:01.15, crushing Stanford's Matt Thompson (2:03.74), Palo Alto's Nick Trowbridge (2:05.42), and Bloch (2:05.64). Trojan's Mads Glaesner rounded out the session with a 3:52.28 victory in the 400 free. Teammate Dominik Meichtry took second in 3:55.18, holding off Mission Viejo's Chad La Tourette (3:55.33).
