WHAT a difference a year makes!

In July of 2000 at the 7th Janet Evans Invitational here at the McDonald's Olympic Swim Stadium on the campus of USC, Stanford's Jenny Thompson — who would go on to win Sydney gold — won the 100 free in a meet-record 54.27. It was also the world's second-quickest century at that time.

Similarly, Tom Malchow, won won gold at the Olympics in the 200 fly, set a meet record in his specialty wirth a 1:55.84 win — still the 17th-fastest
performance of all-time.

However, that was then and this is now. On Day 2 of the eighth edition of the Evans Invitational here this evening, the times were considerably more down to earth — and why not?

Last year the meet was held three weeks before the U.S. Olympic Trials, and all the "Big Guns" were anxious to see where they stood. This year with
nothing more at stake than trying to make a few junior-or senior-national cuts, the results are fine for heavy-training mid-season form but not earth-shattering.

"It feels strange to come here and not feel the excitement that was present last year or the year before," notes Stanford assistant men's coach Ted
Knapp. "Last year, of course, it was the up-coming Trials that made everybody want to race. The year before, the Nationals in Minneapolis was the
selection meet for the Pan-Pac team so everybody wanted to perform well here.

"This year the racing's good but the times aren't quite what they've been in the past — understandably so," Knapp adds.

The Evans meet has been around in various iterations for more than three decades. It began as the Los Angeles Invitational in the late 1960s and was then held in the old Memorial Coliseum Pool, site of the 1932 Olympic swimming competition.

In the late '70s it moved to Mission Viejo but after SC put in the Olympic Pool the meet moved back to Los Angeles in the early '90s and remains a fixture on the Southern California swim calendar. The meet is also the final summer stop on the U.S. Grand Prix circuit, which began at Ann Arbor in May, then moved to Charlotte, Mission Viejo, Santa Clara and last weekend on Long Island (1998 Goodwill Games Pool and 2001
women's NCAA Division 1 meet site).

The meet's namesake, Janet Evans, was here in spirit but not the flesh. Rather she is instead in Japan for the 9th World Championships as head of FINA's Athletes' Commission. The initial day of swimming in Fukuoka is Sunday.

Tonight's competition got off to a flying start when Irvine Novaquatics' Gabrielle Rose, a former Stanford All-America who was a Brazilian Olympian at Atlanta and an American Olympian at Sydney, showed her heels to the field in the 100 free via a 56.46 win over SC's Jen Parmenter's 57.16.

The men's 100 free went to Sun Devils' Nick Brunelli, an "outside smoker" who won in 51.41 from Lane 8. Runner-up was Stanford's Jeff Guyman (51.73) while Sun Devil Gavin Meadows — a former Commonwealth Games medalist for Great Britain — was third (51.79). Meadows later finished a close second to Cincy Marlins' Dan Ketchum in the 400 free.

In the consols the outside lane swimmer was also first, this time Stanford's Andrew Schnell from Lane 1. Schnell edged top qualifier Richard Bera, 51.94-51.97. Bera, who also swims for Coach Mike Chasson's Arizona State Sun Devil squad, is 29. His time is one of the fastest ever for the 25-29 age group, but he's still more than a full second off the Masters world record of 50.74 by Nick Shackell from last year. The old Masters mark of 51.31, held by 1976 Olympic champion Jim Montgomery, had lasted for 19 years.

Shackell, a former UCLA and Auburn All-America was a two-time British Olympian, swimming at the Barcelona and Atlanta Games. He had hopes of making Britain's Big O's team last year and trained assidiously with Coach Dave Salo's Novaquatics' team but failed to make the cut at the British Trials.

For those who may think that Bera is "getting up there" in years, consider the sixth-place finisher in the men's 200 backstroke, Dr. Ron Karnaugh. Backstroke is Karnaugh's weakest stroke.

Super K is all of 35 now and was a gold medalist a decade ago in the Pan-Ams at Havana.

He might well have won a medal at Barcelona in the 200 IM but a personal tragedy (the death of his father shortly before his race) put paid to that possibility.

In any event, Karnaugh's time this evening — 2:06.82 — is well under the listed Masters WR for 35-39 men of 2:09.26 by former Princeton Ivy League champ Dan Veatch from last year. Unfortunately, Masters rules require records to be set in Masters-only competition so scratch that standard.

Dr. Karnaugh really is not at all interested in setting Masters records. He still believes in the Satchel Paige maxim that "You're only as old as you
feel" and he still feels like an 18-year-old kid, ready to take on the world. He swam at last March's U.S. World Championship trials meet and while he failed to make the team, he was competitive and would like nothing more than to add a title or two to his curriculum vitae at next month's U.S. Nationals in Clovis.

Paige pitched in the Major Leagues until his late 40s -or older – so Karnaugh's still in the prime of his career, even if he is a fulltime medical professional in his native New Jersey (and thus presumably unable to get in the requisite training necessary to be world-class).

Winner of the 200 back was the Sun Devils' Ahmed Hussein, a sophomore-to-be at Arizona State. He stormed back from a half-second deficit at the 100 to
win over Arizona's Kris Souther, 2:01.88-2:02.54.

Hussein is a former prep All-America at Anaheim's Sunny Hills High. His time is both a pr and Egyptian national record.

Why is Hussein in Los Angeles rather than Fukuoka?

"He could have gone, the Egyptian Federation invited him to go. But we discussed it and decided it would be far better to compete here and get some valuable racing experience — maybe even be among the Top 3 or 4 — than go over there and wind up something like 25th or 30th in the heats.

"But to come back and win tonight like Ahmed did…I couldn't be more proud of the kid. He took it to him [Souther] and that shows me something. Give him a couple of more years' improvement and he become a very good swimmer."

Did Chasson have any qualms about recruiting an Egyptian athlete?

"He could be from Mars for all I care, as long as he's willing to work and put in the effort, which he obviously is. I recruit swimmers, period. It's not where he's from, it's what he is or can be that counts."

In the women's 200 back, 15-year-old Nova Diana MacManus edged her more senior teammate, 18-year-old Jessica Hayes, 2:13.47-2:14.22. Cal's Alice Henriques (2:16.80) took the bronze.

MacManus, 15, who set a CIF prep record en route to the 100 yard back title last spring at the Championships in the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool, was fourth in the 100 back at the Trials. Her time is a Southern Caiifornia Swimming 15-16 age group record.

Hayes will represent Uncle Sam at next month's World University Games in Beijing, then will swim for Coach Frank Busch's Arizona Wildcats during the 2001-02 collegiate season.

The home team's fans had plenty to cheer about in the women's 200 fly when Trojan junior Michala Kwasny won in 2:13.35 to Sun Devils' Kayln Keller's 2:15.13. Keller won the 800 free opening night.

Olympic gold medalist-American record holder-Stanford NCAA champ Misty Hyman was the race's top qualifier but scratched the finals. She will soon leave for a semester of foreign exchange schooling in Santiago, Chile before returning to The Farm to graduate next spring.

The men's 200 fly went to Irvine's Jeff Somensatto (2:02.30). Somensatto, a former Auburn All-America who was third at last year's Trials, has a pr of
1:58.07 and won the Mission Viejo 200 fly title a month ago too. He's completed his collegiate eligibility but will return to Auburn to graduate.

The women's 400 free went to Stanford's Jessica Foschi, who touched in 4:15.79 to Cardinal teammate Lauren Thies' 4:18.30. Keller was third (4:18.52). Foschi was NCAA 500 free champ this season and Thies won the 400 free at the 1997 World University Games.

The men's 400 free went to the Marlins' Ketchum, who used a last-lap spurt to pull away from Meadows. Ketchum was Big 10 200 free champ last season for Coach Jon Urbancek's Michigan Wolverines and is hopeful of making the Goodwill Games team next month at Clovis.

LANE LINES: The Golden State will be well represented at Fukuoka. SC has Olympic medalists Klete Keller and Erik Vendt, and would have had Lindsay Benko too had she not fractured her knee in a freak accident a few days ago.

Stanford has breaststroker Anthony Robinson, IMer Tom Wilkens and, on the distaff side, Shelley Ripple.

Cal has Ervin, former sprint start Bart Kizierowski (Poland), backstroker Alex Lim (Malaysia) and backstroker Gordan Kozulj (Croatia).

Keller was a busy young lady. Aside from finaling in the 200 fly (silver) and 400 free (bronze) she also swam in the consols of the 200 back.

          SPEEDO/2001 JANET EVANS INVITATIONAL
MCDONALD'S OLYMPIC SWIM STADIUM
LOS ANGELES, CA
JULY 20, 2001
50 METER POOL

WOMEN'S 100 M FREESTYLE

    1) ROSE, GABRIELLE NOVA 56.40
:27.41 :56.40
2) PARMENTER, JENNIFER TROJAN 57.16
:27.72 :57.16
3) CASHION, COURTNEY NOVA 57.20
:27.82 :57.20
4) HAYES, JESSICA NOVA 57.47
:27.66 :57.47
5) TOLAR, SARAH FORD 57.53
:28.02 :57.53
6) KWASNY, MICHALA TROJAN 58.41
:28.07 :58.41
7) VANDENBERG, KIM ORINDA 58.50
:28.09 :58.50
8) NYMEYER, LACEY FORD 58.68
:28.14 :58.68

MEN'S 100 M FREESTYLE

    1) BRUNELLI, NICK SUN DEVIL 51.41
:24.98 :51.41
2) GUYMAN, JEFF STANFORD 51.73
:24.85 :51.73
3) MEADOWS, GAVIN SUN DEVIL 51.79
:25.10 :51.79
4) STEELE, JAKE PAC.
