CHARLOTTE, North Carolina, May 13. A day after an exciting swimoff between Cullen Jones and Josh Schneider provided an interesting opening, some more traditional swimming occurred at the Charlotte UltraSwim. The meet is taking place in long course meters format.<\/p>\n
Trojan Swim Club teammates Rebecca Soni and Jessica Hardy put on a show in the women's 100 breast with Soni edging Hardy in the event. Soni threw down a top-ranked effort of 1:05.57, which cleared her previous world bellwether mark of 1:05.79 set in Brazil earlier this month. Hardy joined Soni as the only other swimmer under 1:06 this year with a 1:05.90, trumping her previous season best effort of 1:06.13 also from Brazil. Minnesota's Jillian Tyler touched a distant third with a time of 1:08.20, off her 10th-ranked season best of 1:07.56 from March. Tucson Ford's Amanda Beard wound up fourth overall in 1:08.46. <\/p>\n
California's Dana Vollmer put away the field in the women's 100 fly with a dominant time of 57.82. That swim came up a bit short of her fourth-ranked season best of 57.50 set in April. Elaine Breeden earned second-place honors with a 59.26, while Tucson Ford's Christine Magnuson finished third in 59.66.<\/p>\n
Colorado Stars' Missy Franklin turned on the jets in the final 50 meters with a 29.25 split to capture the women's 200 free title in 1:57.66. That swim pushed her to 13th in the world rankings this year, and smashed her previous personal best of 1:58.67. Allison Schmitt hit the wall in 1:58.18 after pacing Franklin throughout the race, while California's Dana Vollmer earned third in 1:59.65. <\/p>\n
Trojan's Dominik Meichtry surfaced from a stacked men's 200 free A final with a winning time of 1:48.55. Ricky Berens placed second in 1:49.25, while Trojan's Markus Rogan wound up third in 1:49.47. Daytona Beach's Ryan Lochte (1:49.48), Conor Dwyer (1:49.56) and NBAC's Michael Phelps (1:49.89) finished off the podium with fourth through sixth-place finishes. <\/p>\n
Eric Shanteau nabbed the men's 100 breast crown with a time of 1:01.49, while South Florida's Vlad Polyakov picked up second in 1:02.04. New York's Mark Gangloff nabbed third in 1:02.08. <\/p>\n
Auburn's Tyler McGill claimed the men's 100 fly title in 53.15, while SwimMAC's Eugene Godsoe touched second in 53.22. Ohio State's Tim Phillips rounded out the podium with a third-place time of 53.26. <\/p>\n
Katinka Hosszu dominated the women's 400 IM with a triumphant effort of 4:45.57. Indiana's Allysa Vavra earned second-place honors with a 4:47.73, while PPO Montreal's Barbara Jardin touched third in 4:48.48. Bluefish's Elizabeth Beisel claimed fourth in 4:50.40. <\/p>\n
Germany's Yannick Lebherz raced to victory in the men's 400 IM with a time of 4:21.40. Poseidon's William Harris touched second in 4:23.51, while Swim Ontario's Andrew Ford earned third in 4:27.27.<\/p>\n
In relay action, Colorado Stars' Kara Lynn Joyce, Jordan Mattern, Caroline Piehl and Missy Franklin won the women's 400 free relay in 3:45.73.
