While the FINA World Championships just came to a close last week there was no shortage of fast swimming over the last seven days with the start of the 2017 FINA World Cup Circuit. Read about the records that fell there and catch up on all the stories from the past seven days in The Week That Was.<\/p>\n

The Week That Was #5 – Ian Murray Named New Head Coach At Dynamo<\/b><\/h3>\n

The Board of Directors of the Dynamo Swim Club announced <\/span>Ian Murray <\/b>as their new Head Coach effective September 5th<\/span><\/a>. Murray comes to Dynamo from Carmel Swim Club in Indiana, where he had served as the Head Age Group Coach from 2006-2013 and Associate Head Coach from 2013 onward. Murray experienced considerable success with Carmel, earning the ASCA Coach of Excellence award in 2015 and serving as a National Team coach in 2016 for USA Swimming. <\/span>Mike Cotter<\/b>, who had been the interim CEO of Dynamo and involved with the club for 25 years,<\/span> was also named the Chief Executive Officer of the swim club. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Week That Was #4 – USA Swimming LSC\u2019s Reviewing Tech Suit Rules<\/b><\/h3>\n

USA Swimming Local Swim Committees (LSCs) across the country are beginning to review the rules related to using technical suits in age group competitions. LSC\u2019s in Arkansas, Maine, Oregon, and Southern California are all reviewing the current policies related to the suits. The suits have been seen by many as a deterrent to families joining USA Swimming because of the high cost of the suits. USA Swimming is currently working with an outside consultant to review the policies being explored by various LSC\u2019s in order to help understand the different approaches as the trend continues. An objective report presenting options for development of future policies should be done by November. You can see a full list of the issues to be reviewed <\/span>here<\/span><\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Week That Was #3 – IOC Announces 2024\/2028 Olympic Hosts<\/b><\/h3>\n

The International Olympic Committee came to a decision on <\/span>awarding the hosts for the 2024 and 2028 Summer Olympic Games<\/span><\/a>. The 2024 Games were awarded to Paris, France, while the 2028 Games were awarded to Los Angeles, California. That brings the Summer Games to the United States for the first time since 1984, which incidentally was also the last time that Los Angeles hosted the Olympics. The city had also hosted 1932 Olympic Games. Paris has also twice been the host of the Summer Olympics in 1900 and 1924. Both cities had originally been in contention for the 2024 bid, but given the strength of both candidate cities and the mounting costs of hosting a successful Games the IOC came to an agreement to award each city hosting duties. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Week That Was #2 – Lochte Makes Return To Competition At US Open<\/b><\/h3>\n

The 2017 US Open Championships were underway this week at the Nassau Aquatics Center in East Meadow, NY. The biggest storyline of the meet was Olympian <\/span>Ryan Lochte\u2019s <\/b>return to competition following the completion of his suspension from last summer. The new father only competed in two events, the 100 backstroke and 200 IM, finishing <\/span>5th in the 100 back (55.16)<\/a>\u00a0and winning the 200 IM in a new meet record of 1:59.24<\/a><\/span>. Some notable performances included <\/span>Marie Wattel <\/b>and <\/span>Amanda Kendall <\/b>both swimming 57s in the 100 butterfly <\/span>to blow by the old meet record<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>Damien Joly <\/b>breaking the 26-year-old meet record in the 1500 free on <\/span>the first night of the meet<\/span><\/a>. The Week That Was #1 – Short Course World Records Come Down At FINA World Cup<\/b><\/h3>\n

While the 2017 FINA World Championships just came to a close last week, many of the world\u2019s best swimmers traveled to Moscow to jump into the short course pool for the start of the 2017 FINA World Cup Circuit. <\/span>Sarah Sjostrom <\/b>continued what has been a record breaking year for the Swede, adding the short course world records in the <\/span>50 (23.10)<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>100 (50.77) freestyles<\/span><\/a> to her list of accomplishments. The 23-year-old broke the long course versions of both events last week at the World Championships, where she brought home a total of 4 medals (3 gold and 1 silver). World Champion <\/span>Katinka Hosszu <\/b>was another big name on hand during the meet, coming close to several of her world records in what is a forceful paring down of her usual marathon event schedule.
