FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida, May 7. U.S. divers won three medals Saturday at the AT&T USA Diving Grand Prix.<\/p>\n
Troy Dumais (Ventura, Calif.\/Austin, Texas) won two of those medals, claiming an individual 3-meter bronze and a silver in synchronized 3-meter with Kristian Ipsen (Clayton, Calif.). Mary Beth Dunnichay (Elwood, Ind.) and Anna James (Midland, Texas) won the synchronized women's 10-meter silver medal.<\/p>\n
For Dunnichay and James, it was their first competition together. They scored 280.50 points to finish second only to Canadian sisters Carol-Ann and Pamela Ware, who won gold with 286.62 points. Germany's Christin Steuer and Nora Subschinski were third at 267.18, followed by USA's Jessica Parratto (Dover, N.H.\/Indianapolis, Ind.) and Katie Bell (Columbus, Ohio) with 265.08 points.<\/p>\n
"As little as we've practiced together \u2013 I think we'd practiced only twice or maybe three times \u2013 coming out and getting the silver medal was pretty cool," Dunnichay said.<\/p>\n
Dumais and Ipsen scored 421.98 points for the 3-meter synchro silver, with gold going to China's Qin Kai and Luo Yutong at 447.42. Japan's Sho Sakai and Yu Okamoto earned the final spot on the podium, picking up bronze after scoring 390.66 points. USA's David Bonuchi (Columbia, Mo.) and Michael Hixon (Amherst, Mass.) were 10th with 300.72 points.<\/p>\n
"For not practicing much lately, I thought we hit our dives solidly," Ipsen said. "Troy's dives were really good, but I can clean up a few things before the world trials and hopefully we can make the (world championships) team for Shanghai."<\/p>\n
U.S. synchro teams for the World Championships team will be chosen next week in Tallahassee, Fla.<\/p>\n
Dumais followed up the synchro silver with 480.10 points in the individual 3-meter event. China went 1-2, with gold going to Qin (508.50) and silver to He Chong (487.05). Ipsen scored 427.55 for sixth.<\/p>\n
Australia's Brittany Broben upset 2008 Olympic gold medalist Chen Ruolin for the women's platform gold medal. Broben, 15, scored 400.15 points to Chen's 380.95.China's Hu Yadan finished with 362.90 for bronze. Parratto was sixth at 281.60.
\nThe AT&T USA Diving Grand Prix concludes Sunday with finals in women's 3-meter and men's 10-meter, with competition in both individual and synchronized events.<\/p>\n
