The third evening of finals at the 2017 U.S. Open Championships in East Meadow, N.Y., featured four individual finals, and the highlight came in the women’s 100 fly, when\u00a0Marie Wattel<\/strong> and\u00a0Amanda Kendall<\/strong> each recorded impressive 57-second efforts in the women’s 100 fly.<\/p>\n

On the men’s side,\u00a0Jonathan Roberts\u00a0<\/strong>won his second event in two nights. Read below for event-by-event full coverage from the session.<\/p>\n

Women’s 400 IM<\/h3>\n

Missouri’s\u00a0Sharli Brady\u00a0<\/strong>swam an impressive race, leading through the first 200 meters and then regaining the lead after France’s\u00a0Fantine LeSaffre\u00a0<\/strong>took over on the breaststroke leg. Brady held on to win in 4:42.70, while LeSaffre took second in 4:43.25.<\/p>\n

Metroplex’s\u00a0Vanessa Pearl<\/strong> grabbed third in 4:44.80, while Alabama’s\u00a0Mia Nonnenberg\u00a0<\/strong>finished about a second behind in fourth, clocking 4:45.87.<\/p>\n

Kay Sargent\u00a0<\/strong>finished fourth in 4:46.07, followed by Gator’s\u00a0Hannah Burns\u00a0<\/strong>(4:46.88) and Y-Spartaquatics’\u00a0Savanna Faulconer\u00a0<\/strong>(4:47.64). Scarlet’s\u00a0Matea Samardzic<\/strong>, the 400 IM winner from Thursday night, appeared to touch sixth but was disqualified.<\/p>\n

Men’s 400 IM<\/h3>\n
After winning the 200 back one night earlier, North Texas Nadadores’\u00a0Jonathan Roberts\u00a0<\/strong>again reached the top of the podium in the men’s 400 IM, holding off a blistering back half from Michigan’s\u00a0Charlie Swanson<\/strong> and then asserting himself on the final 50 to pull away.<\/p>\n
Roberts won the race in 4:14.93, followed by Swanson in 4:15.99. Third went to Ridgefield’s\u00a0Kieran Smith<\/strong> in 4:18.81.<\/p>\n
Longhorn’s\u00a0Sam Stewart\u00a0<\/strong>also broke 4:20, finishing fourth in 4:19.69, while Snow’s\u00a0Andrew Brady\u00a0<\/strong>took fifth in 4:21.00.<\/p>\n
Others in the A-final included Sandpipers’\u00a0Carter Grimes\u00a0<\/strong>(4:22.97), TBAY’s\u00a0Grant Sanders\u00a0<\/strong>(4:23.48) and Hudson Explorer’s\u00a0Ross Palazzo\u00a0<\/strong>(4:25.05).<\/p>\n

Women’s 100 Fly<\/h3>\n
France’s\u00a0Marie Wattel<\/strong> held off a strong charge from\u00a0Amanda Kendall<\/strong> in the 100 fly final, and both ended up breaking the U.S. Open meet record. Wattel’s time of 57.53 and Kendall’s 57.87 were both faster than the meet-record time of 58.18 set by\u00a0Elaine Breeden<\/strong> in 2009.<\/p>\n
The times now rank Wattel ninth in the world this year and Kendall tied for 12th. Kendall’s time also made her the No. 2 American this year behind\u00a0Kelsi Worrell<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
Nation’s Capital’s\u00a0Cassidy Bayer\u00a0<\/strong>took third in 59.04, while Indiana’s\u00a0Christie Jensen\u00a0<\/strong>overtook Michigan’s\u00a0Vanessa Krause\u00a0<\/strong>for fourth, 59.40 to 59.59.<\/p>\n
Others in the A-final were Longhorn’s\u00a0Lauren Case\u00a0<\/strong>(59.70), Schroeder YMCA’s\u00a0Hannah Saiz\u00a0<\/strong>(59.74) and Auburn’s\u00a0Bailey Nero\u00a0<\/strong>(1:00.66).<\/p>\n

Men’s 100 Fly<\/h3>\n
Cal’s\u00a0Matthew Josa\u00a0<\/strong>had to fight to get to the wall as he faded down the stretch, but he held on to capture the win in the men’s 100 fly. Longhorn’s\u00a0Tripp Cooper\u00a0<\/strong>and Pleasanton Seahawks’\u00a0Maxime Rooney<\/strong> made it a race with five meters to go, but Josa came into the wall first in 52.15.<\/p>\n
Cooper was second in 52.37, and Rooney took third in 52.45. Nation’s Capital’s\u00a0John Shebat\u00a0<\/strong>was not far away, finishing fourth in 52.56, and neither was Stanford’s\u00a0Andrew Liang<\/strong>, who took fifth in 52.72.<\/p>\n
Michigan’s\u00a0Miles Smachlo<\/strong> finished sixth in 53.32, followed by Nation’s Capital’s\u00a0Sam Pomajevich<\/strong> (53.49) and Alabama’s\u00a0BJ Hornikel<\/strong> (53.69).<\/p>\n

Aggie Swim Club cruised to a five-second victory in the 800 free relay, as\u00a0Katie Portz<\/strong>,\u00a0Kristin Malone<\/strong>,\u00a0Karling Hemstreet\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Claire Rasmus\u00a0<\/strong>combined to swim a time of 8:06.06. Rasmus anchored in a quick 2:00.41 to secure the victory.<\/p>\n
Wisconsin’s team of\u00a0Emmy Sehmann<\/strong>,\u00a0Jess Unicomb<\/strong>,\u00a0Maddi Claire Tew\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Abby Jagdfeld\u00a0<\/strong>took second in 8:11.31, and third went to Missouri’s\u00a0Courtney Evensen<\/strong>,\u00a0Kira Zubar<\/strong>,\u00a0Sharli Brady<\/strong> and\u00a0Kylie Dahlgren<\/strong> in 8:11.44.<\/p>\n

Gutierrez split 1:49.21 to secure the victory for his Golden Bear teammates, including\u00a0Ryan Kao<\/strong>,\u00a0Mike Thomas\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Matthew Josa<\/strong>, as the four combined to finish in 7:20.64.<\/p>\n
