For the second time in two days, Sweden’s\u00a0Sarah Sjostrom\u00a0<\/strong>took down a world record at the FINA World Cup stop in Moscow. Sjostrom, along with Russia’s\u00a0Vladimir Morozov<\/strong>, each won two events on day two of the meet.<\/p>\n

Men’s 100 IM<\/h3>\n

Russia’s\u00a0Vladimir Morozov\u00a0<\/strong>did not come close to his own world record but he pulled away from countryman\u00a0Sergei Fesikov<\/strong> on the back half to take the victory in his first event of the day. Morozov recorded a time of 51.04 for the top spot, about three-quarters of a second short of his world-record time of 50.30.<\/p>\n

Fesikov finished second in 51.78, while\u00a0Kenneth To<\/strong>, competing for Hong Kong for the first time after previously representing Australia, came in third at 51.97.<\/p>\n

Belarus’\u00a0Pavel Sankovich<\/strong> took fourth in 52.25, and fifth went to Germany’s\u00a0Philip Heintz<\/strong> (52.54). Heintz had previously won the 100 IM one day earlier. Others swimming in the final included Italy’s\u00a0Marco Orsi<\/strong> (52.69), Norway’s\u00a0Marcus Lie\u00a0<\/strong>(52.80) and Japan’s\u00a0Kosuke Matsui\u00a0<\/strong>(53.07).<\/p>\n

Women’s 200 Breast<\/h3>\n

Denmark’s\u00a0Rikke Moeller Pedersen\u00a0<\/strong>had to work as she faded down the stretch, but she had enough to hold on for the win in her signature event. She touched in 2:19.84, holding off a strong final 50 charge from Russia’s\u00a0Mariia Temnikova<\/strong>, who had to settle for second in 2:20.14.<\/p>\n

Jamaica’s\u00a0Alia Atkinson<\/strong>, an early leader at the 50-meter mark, ended up third in 2:20.63, just ahead of Russia’s\u00a0Daria Chikunova\u00a0<\/strong>(2:20.84).<\/p>\n

Lithuania’s\u00a0Ruta Meilutyte<\/strong>, more known for her abilities in the sprint breaststroke events, showed some range in finishing fifth in 2:22.21, while Russia’s\u00a0Vera Kalashnikova<\/strong> (2:24.71), Poland’s\u00a0Dominika Sztandera\u00a0<\/strong>(2:25.04) and France’s\u00a0Camille Dauba\u00a0<\/strong>(2:28.18) rounded out the finalists.<\/p>\n

Men’s 400 Free<\/h3>\n

Russia’s\u00a0Alexander Krashnykh\u00a0<\/strong>won a tight battle with Italy’s\u00a0Gabriele Detti<\/strong> to take the win in the 400 free, coming into the wall in 3:38.85, to Detti’s 3:39.02. Neck and neck the entire way, Krashnykh just had a bit more in the tank on the final 50 meters to get the job done.<\/p>\n

Norway’s\u00a0Henrik Christiansen\u00a0<\/strong>stayed close enough to the top three to secure a third-place finish, touching in 3:39.88.<\/p>\n

Poland’s\u00a0Wojiech Wojdak<\/strong> took fourth in 3:41.26, and then there was a big gap back to fifth-place finisher\u00a0Alexander Fedorov\u00a0<\/strong>of Russia (3:45.47). Others in the final included Colombia’s\u00a0Jonathan Gomez\u00a0<\/strong>(3:47.28), Belgium’s\u00a0Lorenz Weiremans\u00a0<\/strong>(3:50.21) and South Africa’s\u00a0Aryton Sweeney<\/strong> (3:51.84).<\/p>\n

Women’s 100 Free<\/h3>\n

After breaking the world record in the women’s 50 free<\/a> on day one in Moscow,\u00a0Sweden’s\u00a0Sarah Sjostrom\u00a0<\/strong>took down yet another global standard in the four-lap race on day two.<\/p>\n

Sjostrom won the event Thursday in 50.77, 14 hundredths faster than the 50.91 Campbell swam two years ago. Two weeks ago, she had never set a world record in the 50 or 100 free, but she know owns the records in both distances in both short and long course.<\/p>\n

Sjostrom broke the two long course world record at the FINA World Championships in Budapest before taking down\u00a0Ranomi Kromowidjojo’s\u00a0<\/strong>50 free record Wednesday in Moscow.<\/p>\n

Kromowidjojo, representing the Netherlands, finished second to Sjostrom in this Moscow final, coming at 51.14 — quicker than the previous World Cup record of 51.14 set by\u00a0Fran Halsall\u00a0<\/strong>in 2009. Campbell finished third in 51.59.<\/p>\n

The Netherlands’\u00a0Femke Heemskerk\u00a0<\/strong>took fourth in 51.98, and Italy’s\u00a0Federica Pellegrini\u00a0<\/strong>tied with Russia’s\u00a0Veronika Popova\u00a0<\/strong>for fifth in 52.99. Also competing in the final were Russians\u00a0Daria Kartashova\u00a0<\/strong>(54.09) and\u00a0Daria Ustinova\u00a0<\/strong>(54.29).<\/p>\n

Men’s 200 Back<\/h3>\n

Poland’s\u00a0Radoslaw Kawecki<\/strong> picked up the win in his signature event, recording the only performance under 1:49 as he touched the wall in 1:48.96. Kawecki was the World Short Course champion in the event last year but missed out on the semi-finals in the 200 back at last week’s World Championships in Budapest.<\/p>\n

Japan’s\u00a0Masaki Kaneko<\/strong> finished second in 1:49.93, and Germany’s\u00a0Christian Diener\u00a0<\/strong>was third in 1:50.37. Well back in fourth was Russia’s\u00a0Grigory Tarasevich<\/strong> (1:52.55), and Poland’s\u00a0Jakub Skierka\u00a0<\/strong>took fifth in 1:54.64.<\/p>\n

Australia’s\u00a0Mitch Larkin<\/strong>, the world record-holder in the event, finished a surprising sixth in 1:53.30. Larkin has been almost eight seconds faster in his career, but he has struggled badly recently, including at the World Championships, where he was eliminated in the 200 back semi-finals as the defending World Champion.<\/p>\n

Russia’s\u00a0Dmitrii Maltcev\u00a0<\/strong>finished seventh in 1:53.88, and France’s\u00a0Maxence Orange\u00a0<\/strong>took eighth in 1:54.03.<\/p>\n

Women’s 200 IM<\/h3>\n

In her lone event of the day, Hungary’s\u00a0Katinka Hosszu<\/strong> was never challenge in the middle of the three medley distances. Hosszu won the race in 2:04.76, almost three seconds off her world record of 2:01.86.<\/p>\n

Australia’s\u00a0Emily Seebohm<\/strong> came in second at 2:07.64, and Poland’s\u00a0Alicja Tchorz<\/strong> took third in 2:08.13. The Netherland’s\u00a0Femke Heemskerk\u00a0<\/strong>took fourth for the second straight women’s final (following the 100 free) as she touched in 2:09.80.<\/p>\n

Others competing in the final included Germany’s\u00a0Alexandra Wenk\u00a0<\/strong>(2:10.57), Russia’s\u00a0Kristina Vershinina\u00a0<\/strong>(2:12.04), France’s\u00a0Camille Dauba\u00a0<\/strong>(2:15.14) and Russia’s\u00a0Aleksandra Maslova\u00a0<\/strong>(2:15.91).<\/p>\n

Men’s 50 Fly<\/h3>\n

The changes to the World Cup format meant that only two men’s butterfly races would be contested in Moscow, but South Africa’s\u00a0Chad Le Clos<\/strong> has now won them both. After winning the 100-meter race Wednesday, he added the 50 to his collection of first-place finishes, touching in 22.31.<\/p>\n

Le Clos easily out-paced\u00a0Great Britain’s\u00a0Adam Barrett<\/strong>, who touched second in 22.55. Belarus’\u00a0Yauhen Tsurkin<\/strong> and the United States’\u00a0Tom Shields\u00a0<\/strong>each touched five hundredths back in 22.60, tying for third.<\/p>\n

There were actually two additional ties in the final as Russian countrymen\u00a0Nikita Korolev\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Oleg Kostin<\/strong> tied for fifth in 22.73, and Belarus’\u00a0Pavel Sankovich\u00a0<\/strong>tied Finland’s\u00a0Riku Polytakivi<\/strong> for seventh in 22.95.<\/p>\n

Women’s 50 Back<\/h3>\n

After twice finishing second to\u00a0Katinka Hosszu<\/strong> in both the 100 back and 200 IM, Australia’s\u00a0Emily Seebohm<\/strong> picked up her first victory of the two-day Moscow meet in the 50 back. The World Champion in the 200 back last week, Seebohm touched in 26.35 to beat the Netherlands’\u00a0Maaike De Waard\u00a0<\/strong>by two tenths.<\/p>\n

De Waard finished second in 26.55, and Poland’s\u00a0Alicja Tchorz<\/strong> took third in 26.69.<\/p>\n

Russia’s\u00a0Maria Kameneva\u00a0<\/strong>finished fourth in 26.73, and then there was a tie for fifth between Russia’s\u00a0Anastasiia Fesikova\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0the Netherlands’\u00a0Ranomi Kromowidjojo<\/strong>, with both touching in 26.77. Kromowidjojo, more known for her sprint free abilities, was making a rare appearance in a dorsal race.<\/p>\n

Poland’s\u00a0Aleksandra Urbanczyk\u00a0<\/strong>took seventh in 26.98, followed by Colombia’s\u00a0Isabella Arcila\u00a0<\/strong>in 27.41.<\/p>\n

\"women-50-back-moscow\"<\/p>\n

Men’s 100 Breast<\/h3>\n

Swimming out of lane eight, South Africa’s\u00a0Cameron van der Burgh<\/strong> took down a pair of impressive Russians to win the 100 breast in Moscow. Van der Burgh holds the world record in the event at 55.61, and he came in seven tenths behind that in 56.30, just enough to touch out\u00a0Ilya Shymanovich<\/strong> (56.40).<\/p>\n

Kirill Prigoda<\/strong>, who captured a bronze in the event at the World Championships, took third again in 56.80.<\/p>\n

Belgium’s\u00a0Basten Caerts<\/strong> finished fourth in 57.71, while Russia’s\u00a0Vladimir Morozov<\/strong>, the top seed and winner of the 100 IM earlier in the night, was fifth in 57.95.<\/p>\n

Just behind Morozov was Russian\u00a0Anton Chupkov<\/strong>, the 200 breast World Champion, who finished in 57.97. Two other Russians,\u00a0Andrei Nikolaev\u00a0<\/strong>(58.47) and\u00a0Rustam Gadirov<\/strong> (59.13), finished seventh and eighth, respectively.<\/p>\n

Women’s 800 Free<\/h3>\n

Spain’s\u00a0Mireia Belmonte\u00a0<\/strong>could not quite approach her sensational world record of 7:59.34, but she cruised to first in the 800 free, pulling away from Chile’s\u00a0Kristel Kobrich<\/strong> and touching in 8:07.10. Kobrich ended up second in 8:18.88.<\/p>\n

New Zealand’s\u00a0Emma Robinson<\/strong> took third in 8:21.58, and Russia’s\u00a0Anna Egorova\u00a0<\/strong>finished fourth in 8:21.84. Portugal’s\u00a0Diana Duraes\u00a0<\/strong>(8:24.09) and Tamila Holub\u00a0<\/strong>(8:30.86), China’s\u00a0Wang Guoyue\u00a0<\/strong>(8:36.59) and Russia’s\u00a0Arina Openysheva\u00a0<\/strong>(8:38.43) completed the top eight.<\/p>\n

Men’s 50 Free<\/h3>\n

Russia’s\u00a0Vladimir Morozov<\/strong> picked up his second top finish of the day, finishing well ahead of the field in the splash-and-dash and touching in 20.93.<\/p>\n

Poland’s\u00a0Pawe Juraszek<\/strong> finished second in 21.25, touching out Russia’s\u00a0Sergei Fesikov<\/strong> (21.28) by three hundredths.<\/p>\n

Hungary’s\u00a0Maxim Lobanovskij<\/strong> took fourth in 21.40, and he was followed by Italy’s\u00a0Marco Orsi<\/strong> (21.45), the Netherlands’\u00a0Jesse Puts\u00a0<\/strong>(21.53), Japan’s\u00a0Kosuke Matsui\u00a0<\/strong>(21.63) and Belarus’\u00a0Artsiom Machekin<\/strong> (21.69).<\/p>\n

Women’s 100 Fly<\/h3>\n

After setting a world record earlier in the evening in the 100 free,\u00a0Sweden’s\u00a0Sarah Sjostrom\u00a0<\/strong>picked up another win in the women’s 100 fly– even if she couid not approach her own world record this time around.<\/p>\n

Sjostrom cruised to victory in 55.70, well ahead of anyone else in the field. Russia’s\u00a0Svetlana Chimrova\u00a0<\/strong>took second in 57.02, and Jamaica’s\u00a0Alia Atkinson<\/strong>, much better-known for her breaststroke abilities than butterfly, came in third in 57.56.<\/p>\n

Also breaking 58 were Russia’s\u00a0Ekaterina Shapanikova\u00a0<\/strong>(57.73) and Germany’s\u00a0Franziska Hentke\u00a0<\/strong>(57.84), and the rest of the field consisted of Hong Kong’s\u00a0Kin Lok Chan\u00a0<\/strong>(58.58), Russia’s\u00a0Anastasia Guzhenkova\u00a0<\/strong>(59.00) and Germany’s\u00a0Alexandra Wenk\u00a0<\/strong>(59.16).<\/p>\n

Mixed 200 Free Relay<\/h3>\n

Russia cruised to victory in the mixed 200 free relay to round out the night, with\u00a0Vladimir Morozov\u00a0<\/strong>(21.51),\u00a0Sergei Fesikov\u00a0<\/strong>(21.37),\u00a0Rozaliya Nasretdinova\u00a0<\/strong>(24.21) and\u00a0Veronika Popova\u00a0<\/strong>(24.30) combining to swim a time of 1:31.39.<\/p>\n

Poland took second in 1:32.93 with\u00a0Pawe Juraszek<\/strong>,\u00a0Aleksandra Urbanczyk<\/strong>,\u00a0Alicja Tchorz<\/strong> and\u00a0Tomasz Polewka\u00a0<\/strong>competing. Another Russian squad,\u00a0Roman Shevliakov<\/strong>,\u00a0Kirill Kiselev<\/strong>,\u00a0Daria Kartashova\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Daria Ustinova<\/strong>, took third in 1:33.11.<\/p>\n

Yet another foursome from Russia finished fourth in 1:33.54, and China was fourth in 1:40.34.<\/p>\n
