Sweden’s\u00a0Sarah Sjostrom\u00a0<\/strong>posted a world record<\/a> in the women’s 50 free during the first day of short course meters competition at the FINA World Cup stop in Moscow. The swim marked her third global standard set in the span of 11 days, going back to the start of the FINA World Championships in Budapest.<\/p>\n

Several other top performers from Budapest were also in action in Moscow, and both\u00a0Chad Le Clos\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Katinka Hosszu<\/strong> opened up their World Cup campaigns with multiple victories.<\/p>\n

Women’s 100 Back<\/h3>\n

Hungary’s\u00a0Katinka Hosszu\u00a0<\/strong>skipped the 100 back at the World Championships last week but returned to the event in short course to in the first victory of the World Cup. She touched in 55.65, just about a half-second off her own world record of 55.03 and plenty quick enough to beat out Australia’s\u00a0Emily Seebohm<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Seebohm, who knocked off Hosszu to win the World title in the 100 back, took second in 56.60, and Russia’s\u00a0Maria Kameneva<\/strong> was third in 57.09.<\/p>\n

The Netherlands’\u00a0Maaike De Waard\u00a0<\/strong>grabbed fourth in 58.15, a tenth ahead of Poland’s\u00a0Alicja Tchorz<\/strong> (58.25). Also swimming in the final were Colombia’s\u00a0Isabella Arcila\u00a0<\/strong>(58.40) and Russians\u00a0Polina Lapshina\u00a0<\/strong>(58.83) and\u00a0Irina Prikhodko<\/strong> (59.63).<\/p>\n

Men’s 200 Free<\/h3>\n

South Africa’s\u00a0Chad Le Clos\u00a0<\/strong>came from behind on the last 50 to overtake Russia’s\u00a0Aleksandr Krashnykh<\/strong> and take the win. Le Clos split 25.71 on the way home to come in first at 1:42.54, while Krashnykh, the bronze medalist in the event at the World Championships, touched second in 1:42.69.<\/p>\n

Le Clos was the Olympic silver medalist in the 200 free last summer but did not compete in the event in Budapest.<\/p>\n

Russia’s\u00a0Mikhail Vekovishchev<\/strong> finished third in 1:43.26, and countryman\u00a0Nikita Lobintsev\u00a0<\/strong>was fourth in 1:44.11. Italy’s\u00a0Gabrielle Detti<\/strong>, more known for his efforts in the longer distances, took fifth in 1:44.75.<\/p>\n

Others in the final included Norway’s\u00a0Markus Lie\u00a0<\/strong>(1:45.13), Russia’s\u00a0Danila Izotov\u00a0<\/strong>(1:45.79), Poland’s\u00a0Wojciech Wojdak<\/strong> (1:45.82) and Norway’s\u00a0Henrik Christiansen<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Women’s 50 Breast<\/h3>\n

Jamaica’s\u00a0Alia Atkinson<\/strong> touched out Lithuania’s\u00a0Ruta Meilutyte\u00a0<\/strong>to pick up the win, 29.46 to 29.51. Russia’s\u00a0Natalia Ivaneeva<\/strong> picked up third-place honors in 29.87.<\/p>\n

Finland’s\u00a0Jenna Laukkanen<\/strong> took fourth in 30.18, followed closely by Poland’s\u00a0Dominika Sztandera\u00a0<\/strong>(30.25). Others competing in the final included Denmarks’\u00a0Rikke Moeller\u00a0<\/strong>Pedersen<\/strong> (30.71) and Russians\u00a0Daria Chikunova\u00a0<\/strong>(30.76) and\u00a0Mariia Temnikova\u00a0<\/strong>(30.82).<\/p>\n

Men’s 200 Breast<\/h3>\n

A Russian got the win in the men’s 200 breast, but it was not the man who stormed to a World title in the event last week in Budapest,\u00a0Anton Chupkov<\/strong>. Instead, it was Budapest 100 breast bronze medalist\u00a0Kirill Prigoda\u00a0<\/strong>who dominated the field and won the race in 2:02.16.<\/p>\n

Belarus’\u00a0Ilya Shymanovich<\/strong> actually led throughout the first half of the race, but he faded to second in 2:03.71. Chupkov settled for third in 2:04.08.<\/p>\n

Belgium’s\u00a0Basten Caerts\u00a0<\/strong>took fourth in 2:05.57, followed by Russia’s\u00a0Egor Suchkov\u00a0<\/strong>(2:06.47),\u00a0Rustam Gadirov\u00a0<\/strong>(2:06.52) and\u00a0Mikhail Dorinov\u00a0<\/strong>(2:07.21). Japan’s\u00a0Yukihiro Takahashi<\/strong> was eighth in 2:07.33.<\/p>\n

Women’s 400 Free<\/h3>\n

Italy’s\u00a0Federica Pellegrini\u00a0<\/strong>got the better of Spain’s\u00a0Mireia Belmonte\u00a0<\/strong>and picked up a half-second win in the 400 free. Pellegrini came in at 3:57.80, and Belmonte was second in 3:58.24.<\/p>\n

Pellegrini recently won her third World title in the 200 free, but she has been very successful in the 400 in previous years, winning the event at both the 2009 and 2011 World Championships.<\/p>\n

Russia’s\u00a0Anna Egorova\u00a0<\/strong>finished well back in third in 4:04.31. Portugal’s\u00a0Diana Duraes\u00a0<\/strong>was fourth in 4:05.38, followed by Chile’s\u00a0Kristel Kobrich<\/strong> in 4:05.93.<\/p>\n

Rounding out the final were New Zealand’s\u00a0Emma Robinson<\/strong> (4:07.51), Portugal’s\u00a0Tamila Holub\u00a0<\/strong>(4:12.51) and China’s\u00a0Wang Guoyue\u00a0<\/strong>(4:19.32).<\/p>\n

Men’s 50 Back<\/h3>\n

Belarus’\u00a0Pavel Sankovich\u00a0<\/strong>beat out the field by two tenths in the men’s sprint backstroke race, coming in at 23.20. Germany’s\u00a0Christian Diener\u00a0<\/strong>touched second in 23.40, and Japan’s\u00a0Masaki Kaneko<\/strong> took third in 23.48, one hundredth ahead of Russia’s\u00a0Vladimir Morozov\u00a0<\/strong>(23.49).<\/p>\n

Poland’s\u00a0Radoslaw Kawecki<\/strong>, more known for his 200 abilities, was fifth in 23.61, just ahead of Belarus’\u00a0Viktar Staselovich<\/strong> (23.63.) Completing the top eight were Russia’s\u00a0Andrei Shabasov\u00a0<\/strong>(23.77) and\u00a0Mark Nikolaev\u00a0<\/strong>(24.70).<\/p>\n

Women’s 100 IM<\/h3>\n

Hungary’s\u00a0Katinka Hosszu<\/strong> picked up her second win of the day in the sprint IM, but she had to work harder than expected to hold off Sweden’s\u00a0Sarah Sjostrom<\/strong>. Sjostrom, more known for her sprint free and fly, was able to put together 25 meters of back and breast to give Hosszu a run.<\/p>\n

In the end, she just ran out of room, as Hosszu got the win in 57.02, to Sjostrom’s 57.10. Australia’s\u00a0Emily Seebohm<\/strong> finished third in 58.63.<\/p>\n

Jamaica’s\u00a0Alia Atkinson<\/strong> touched out the Netherlands’\u00a0Femke Heemskerk\u00a0<\/strong>for fourth, 59.55 to 59.57. Also swimming in the final were Finland’s\u00a0Jenna Laukkanen<\/strong> (59.66) and the Polish duo of\u00a0Aleksandra Urbanczyk\u00a0<\/strong>(59.75) and\u00a0Alicja Tchorz<\/strong> (1:00.13).<\/p>\n

Men’s 400 IM<\/h3>\n

Germany’s\u00a0Philip Heintz\u00a0<\/strong>cruised to a 400 IM triumph, touching in 4:04.93 to out-pace the field by almost 3.5 seconds. The man who came the closest to him, it turned out, was Australia’s\u00a0Mitch Larkin<\/strong>, more known for his backstroke exploits.\u00a0He came in second at 4:07.93.<\/p>\n

South Africa’s\u00a0Aaron Sweeney\u00a0<\/strong>claimed third in 4:09.47.<\/p>\n

Russia’s\u00a0Aleksandr Osipenko<\/strong> finished fourth in 4:11.35, followed by countrymen\u00a0Eduard Valiakhmetov\u00a0<\/strong>(4:12.53) and\u00a0Ivan Pavlov\u00a0<\/strong>(4:13.36), Colombia’s\u00a0Jonathan Gomez\u00a0<\/strong>(4:13.87) and Japan’s\u00a0Masaki Kaneko<\/strong> (4:14.06).<\/p>\n

Women’s 200 Fly<\/h3>\n

The women who won medals in the 200 fly in Moscow were the same as the trio who stood on the podium last week at the World Champs in Budapest, but the order was mixed up a bit in this short course race. Germany’s\u00a0Franziska\u00a0<\/strong>Hentke<\/strong>, who settled for silver in Budapest, pulled away from Hungary’s\u00a0Katinka Hosszu<\/strong> on the last 50 to win in 2:03.43.<\/p>\n

Hosszu, who actually faded badly down the stretch, took second in Moscow after claiming a bronze at Worlds, finishing with a time of 2:05.36, while World Champion\u00a0Mireia Belmonte\u00a0<\/strong>of Spain was third in 2:05.75.<\/p>\n

Fourth went to Russia’s\u00a0Anastasia Guzhenkova i<\/strong>n 2:06.59, and then there was a big gap back to\u00a0Claudia Hufnagl<\/strong> in fifth at 2:09.23.<\/p>\n

Also in the final were Hong Kong’s\u00a0Kin Lok Chen\u00a0<\/strong>(2:09.96), Portugal’s\u00a0Victoria Kaminskaya\u00a0<\/strong>(2:10.73) and Russia’s\u00a0Valeria Shchelkotunova\u00a0<\/strong>(2:14.06).<\/p>\n

Men’s 100 Fly<\/h3>\n

South Africa’s\u00a0Chad Le Clos\u00a0<\/strong>pulled away from Great Britain’s\u00a0Adam Barrett\u00a0<\/strong>and the United States’\u00a0Tom Shields\u00a0<\/strong>to capture the win in the 100 fly.<\/p>\n

Le Clos set the world record in the event at the Short Course World Championships last year in Windsor at 48.08, and he finished about a second off that in Moscow at 49.13. Barrett came in second at 49.45, and Shields took third in 49.55.<\/p>\n

Italy’s\u00a0Matteo Rivolta\u00a0<\/strong>claimed fourth in 49.77 to round out the sub-50-second performances.<\/p>\n

Also competing in the final were Russia’s\u00a0Oleg Kostin\u00a0<\/strong>(50.51), Belarus’\u00a0Yauhen Tsurkin<\/strong> (50.56), Japan’s\u00a0Masayuki Umemoto\u00a0<\/strong>(51.12) and Finland’s\u00a0Riku Poytakivi<\/strong> (51.69).<\/p>\n

Women’s 50 Free<\/h3>\n

Sweden’s\u00a0Sarah Sjostrom <\/strong>took down the world record in the women’s 50 free, touching in\u00a023.10 to streamroll the mark twice achieved by the Netherlands’\u00a0Ranomi Kromowidjojo<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Sjostrom won three gold medals (100 fly, 50 fly, 50 free) at the World Championships last week and took down world record in both the 50 free and 100 free.<\/p>\n

Kromowidjojo actually finished second behind Sjostrom — and not all that far back with her time of 23.39. Australia’s\u00a0Cate Campbell<\/strong>, whose long course world records in the 50 and 100 free Sjostrom took down at Worlds, finished third in 23.96.<\/p>\n

Kromowidjojo’s Dutch countrywoman\u00a0Femke Heemskerk\u00a0<\/strong>finished fourth in 24.14, just missing a spot on the podium.<\/p>\n

The rest of the field included Poland’s\u00a0Aleksandra Urbanczyk<\/strong> (24.36), Russia’s\u00a0Daria Kartashova\u00a0<\/strong>(24.63), Colombia’s\u00a0Isabella Arcila\u00a0<\/strong>(24.73) and Russia’s\u00a0Maria Kameneva\u00a0<\/strong>(24.73).<\/p>\n

Mixed 200 Medley Relay<\/h3>\n

Russia topped the mixed 200 medley relay to cap off the evening of competition.\u00a0Vladimir Morozov\u00a0<\/strong>(23.59),\u00a0Kirill Prigoda\u00a0<\/strong>(25.49),\u00a0Svetlana Chimrova<\/strong> (25.50) and\u00a0Veronika Popova\u00a0<\/strong>(24.52) won the race in 1:39.10, more than a second-and-a-half ahead of the runner-up Polish squad.<\/p>\n

Poland’s\u00a0Radoslaw Kawecki<\/strong>,\u00a0Dominika Sztandera<\/strong>,\u00a0Aleksandra Urbanczyk<\/strong> and\u00a0Pawe Juraszek\u00a0<\/strong>finished second in 1:40.79, and Germany’s\u00a0Lisa Graf<\/strong>,\u00a0Philip Heintz<\/strong>,\u00a0Alexandra Wenk<\/strong> and\u00a0Christian Diener\u00a0<\/strong>finished third in 1:42.71.<\/p>\n
