Both are deserving; Croatia for devising a strategy to beat a \u201cgolden\u201d Serbian squad that hadn\u2019t lost a championship in almost three years, and then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/tears-in-the-water-croatia-beats-host-hungary-in-fina-water-polo-final\/\" target=\"_blank\">defeating<\/a> host Hungary in front of thousands of rabid Hungarians at the Mecca for water polo, <strong>Alfr\u00e9d Haj\u00f3s Swimming Complex; <\/strong>the U.S. for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/u-s-women-grab-2nd-straight-fina-world-championship-with-13-6-win-over-spain\/\" target=\"_blank\">beating<\/a> Spain 13-6, thereby avoiding the rash of upsets that curtailed the title hopes of Holland, Hungary and Italy.<\/p>\n<p>Based on limited feedback, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/catching-up-with-serbias-filip-filipovic\/\" target=\"_blank\">comments<\/a> of Serbia\u2019s <strong>Filip Filipovic<\/strong> and the silence\u2014at least in the English press\u2014of Serbian head coach <strong>Dejan Savic<\/strong>, there apparently is a \u201cblame the referees\u201d rationale for the unexpected loss of one of the tournament\u2019s overwhelming favorites. Rather than weigh in on this debate, I will offer that the officials are ALWAYS to blame when things don\u2019t go as expected.<\/p>\n<p>Serbia has been playing dominant water polo for an extended period and, except for the retirements of <span class=\"st\"><strong>Zivko Gocic<\/strong> and <strong>Slobodan Nikic<\/strong><\/span>, their Olympic-winning team is intact\u2014and will certainly win again. Was it an upset for the ages? I leave it to others more knowledgeable than I to decide. Was it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.syracuse.com\/orangewomen\/index.ssf\/2017\/04\/syracuse_womens_basketball_coach_uconn_loss_shows_theres_parity_in_the_game.html\" target=\"_blank\">good for the sport<\/a>? Absolutely! Photo Courtesy: SIPA USA<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The other overwhelming favorites at FINA Worlds were the American women, and they succeeded mightily where the Serbia men did not. They are the only team ever to have followed up an Olympic gold with a world championship the following year. While this accomplishment may not seem significant to some\u2014for reference, ask the Serbians what a challenge this is!\u2014Team USA\u2019s head coach <strong>Adam Krikorian<\/strong> integrated six new players into his roster of 13. Of course, it helped tremendously that the core of his 2016 Olympic gold medalists\u2014<strong>Rachel Fattal<\/strong>, <strong>Aria + Makenzie Fischer<\/strong>, <strong>Maddie Musselman<\/strong>, <strong>Kiley Neushel<\/strong>, <strong>Melissa Seidemann<\/strong>, <strong>Maggie Steffens<\/strong>\u2014returned; but the Americans had to contend with more change than any other contender, including the absence of goalie <strong>Ashleigh Johnson<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>More than talent\u2014though the U.S. has the best base of women\u2019s water polo talent in the world\u2014it&#8217;s the culture of the American women\u2019s program that makes it so successful. In his blog <em>3WireSports<\/em>, <strong>Alan <\/strong><strong>Abrahamson<\/strong> has an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.3wiresports.com\/2017\/07\/28\/winning-culture-usa-womens-water-polo\/\" target=\"_blank\">excellent article<\/a> about the creation and sustainability of Team USA\u2019s winning culture, and how this culture continually connects the early pioneers of U.S. women\u2019s polo with all the players\u2014new and old\u2014who make the cut for the world&#8217;s top women\u2019s squad.<\/p>\n<p>If there\u2019s one regret about this tournament\u2014which was otherwise brilliant for someone who had never experience European polo\u2014it\u2019s that the Hungarian women\u2019s team did not make it through to the final. Randazzo<\/p><\/div>\n<p>What will stay with me is the unforgettable experience of being in <strong>Haj\u00f3s Arena <\/strong>Saturday night for the Hungary vs. Croatia men\u2019s final. There is simply nothing in the States like this atmosphere for polo. The excitement, the intensity was unbelievable. Even the blaring music, which was a non-stop pastiche of faded (and in some cases <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=bgOybXkJpdU\" target=\"_blank\">ridiculed<\/a>) pop hits like the <em>Macarena<\/em> and <em>Oppa Gangman Style<\/em>\u2014sounded surprisingly fresh, especially with the fans so engaged.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, there are other things to do in Budapest besides watching water polo. One thing I came across was <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hotrodbudapest.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hot Rod Budapest<\/a> <\/strong>(brand new!) that offers these cool little carts with benzene engines that can hit 60 KPH. Before anyone thinks that they can hop in one and race around the city, it turns out that these are used for group tours, and a leader goes out with group to ensure that no one gets a speeding ticket!<\/p>\n<p>One other novelty I stumbled upon is the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.budapestmakery.hu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Makery<\/a><\/strong>\u2014a new (?) concept in fine dining. It&#8217;s a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Do_it_yourself\" target=\"_blank\">DIY<\/a> restaurant; they which provides the ingredients and a video guide on how to prepare the food; you make it yourself on a hotplate at your table. It\u2019s a totally strange concept but somehow very appealing (full disclosure: I simply had breakfast there\u2014which they prepared). The owners plan to franchise the idea, once they prove its viability. The venue couldn\u2019t have been better, the competition was for the most part exceptional, the management of the event was superb.
