﻿{"id":269836,"date":"2017-07-30T02:01:26","date_gmt":"2017-07-30T09:01:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=269836"},"modified":"2017-07-30T02:13:30","modified_gmt":"2017-07-30T09:13:30","slug":"2017-fina-world-championships-day-eight-prelims-live-recap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/2017-fina-world-championships-day-eight-prelims-live-recap\/","title":{"rendered":"Americans Claim Three of Four Top Seeds in Final Day Prelims at Worlds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>During the final day&#8217;s prelims at the FINA World Championships in Budapest, only four events were contested, and swimmers from the United States claimed first place in three of them.\u00a0<strong>Chase Kalisz<\/strong> took first in the men&#8217;s 400 IM, while both medley relays qualified tops for the finals with so-called &#8220;B&#8221; teams.<\/p>\n<p>In the other race of the morning, Hungary&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Katinka Hosszu<\/strong> was first in the women&#8217;s 400 IM.<\/p>\n<p>Read below for event-by-event full coverage of the morning session.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/results\/pdf\/2017-fina-world-championships-day-eight-prelims-international-elite-2017-07-23.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Full results<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 400 IM<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Katinka Hosszu<\/strong> powered to a top qualifying time of 4:33.90 in prelims of the women&#8217;s 400 IM, but not without some challengers pushing her forward. He was followed closely by Great Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Max Litchfield<\/strong>, looking for his first major international medal after finishing fourth in the 200 IM. Litchfield touched in 4:10.57.<\/p>\n<p>Hungary&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>David Verraszto\u00a0<\/strong>rode a partisan crowd to the third seed, as he touched in 4:11.89, and two-time defending champion\u00a0<strong>Daiya Seto\u00a0<\/strong>of Japan finished exactly one second back in 4:12.89, good for the fourth overall seed.<\/p>\n<p>Brazil&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Brandon Almeida\u00a0<\/strong>took sixth in 4:13.13, while American\u00a0<strong>Jay Litherland\u00a0<\/strong>out-dueled Japan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Kosuke Hagino<\/strong>\u00a0for second place behind Verraszto in their heat, 4:13.95 to 4:14.15. The team of\u00a0<strong>Olivia Smoliga<\/strong>\u00a0(59.52),\u00a0<strong>Katie Meili<\/strong>\u00a0(1:05.17),\u00a0<strong>Sarah Gibson<\/strong>\u00a0(58.36) and\u00a0<strong>Mallory Comerford\u00a0<\/strong>(52.90) combined to swim a 3:55.95.<\/p>\n<p>China qualified second in 3:57.12, using\u00a0<strong>Fu Yuanhui<\/strong>\u00a0(1:00.04),\u00a0<strong>Shi Jinglin<\/strong>\u00a0(1:06.55),\u00a0<strong>Zhang Yufei<\/strong>\u00a0(57.50) and\u00a0<strong>Zhu Menghui<\/strong>\u00a0(53.03). Canada&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Kylie Masse\u00a0<\/strong>(58.86),\u00a0<strong>Kierra Smith<\/strong>\u00a0(1:07.20),\u00a0<strong>Rebecca Smith<\/strong>\u00a0(57.75) and\u00a0<strong>Sandrine Mainville\u00a0<\/strong>(53.36) qualified third in 3:57.17.<\/p>\n<p>The Americans should replace their entire team in the finals, with\u00a0<strong>Kathleen Baker<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Lilly King<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Kelsi Worrell\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Simone Manuel<\/strong>\u00a0poised to come on. Canada will insert\u00a0<strong>Penny Oleksiak<\/strong>\u00a0to swim fly and\u00a0<strong>Chantal Van Landeghem<\/strong>\u00a0to anchor.<\/p>\n<p>Russia, swimming without\u00a0<strong>Yulia Efimova<\/strong>, qualified fourth in 3:57.53, and Australia, sans\u00a0<strong>Emily Seebohm<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Emma McKeon<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>Bronte Campbell<\/strong>, was fifth in 3:58.74.<\/p>\n<p>Italy (4:00.03), Sweden (4:01.44) and Great Britain (4:01.78) also made finals. Russia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Grigory Tarasevich\u00a0<\/strong>(53.71),\u00a0<strong>Anton Chupkov\u00a0<\/strong>(59.06),\u00a0<strong>Daniil Pakhomov\u00a0<\/strong>(51.55) and\u00a0<strong>Danila Izotov\u00a0<\/strong>(47.80) took third in 3:32.12.<\/p>\n<p>Great Britain qualified fourth in 3:32.35, but\u00a0<strong>Adam Peaty\u00a0<\/strong>did not compete in prelims and is bound to make a big impact in the finals.
