During the final day’s prelims at the FINA World Championships in Budapest, only four events were contested, and swimmers from the United States claimed first place in three of them.\u00a0Chase Kalisz<\/strong> took first in the men’s 400 IM, while both medley relays qualified tops for the finals with so-called “B” teams.<\/p>\n

In the other race of the morning, Hungary’s\u00a0Katinka Hosszu<\/strong> was first in the women’s 400 IM.<\/p>\n

Women’s 400 IM<\/h3>\n

Katinka Hosszu<\/strong> powered to a top qualifying time of 4:33.90 in prelims of the women’s 400 IM, but not without some challengers pushing her forward. Throughout the third heat the USA’s\u00a0Elizabeth Beisel,<\/strong>\u00a0Japan’s\u00a0Sakiko Shimizu<\/strong>\u00a0and Spain’s\u00a0Mireia Belmonte<\/strong> all made advances on Hosszu’s lead, with Shimizu blitzing past her on the breaststroke leg.<\/p>\n

A strong final 100 meters would push Hosszu to the wall first, followed by a strong finish from Belmonte at 4:35.29.<\/p>\n

Beisel, who continually worked her way up throughout the heat, turned in a final time of 4:36.18 to claim the third place seed for tonight’s final.<\/p>\n

Sydney Pickrem<\/strong> of Canada picked up the fourth place seed after finishing first in heat two with a 4:36.25, while Shimizu qualified fifth overall with a 4:36.43.<\/p>\n

The USA’s\u00a0Leah Smith<\/strong> (4:36.94), Japan’s\u00a0Yui Ohashi<\/strong> (4:36.97), and Great Britain’s\u00a0Hannah Miley<\/strong> (4:37.14) qualified\u00a0sixth through eighth respectively.<\/p>\n

Men’s 400 IM<\/h3>\n

Chase Kalisz<\/strong>\u00a0of the United States has already captured gold in the men’s 200 IM in Budapest, and he will go for the IM sweep in the 400-meter distance after qualifying first out of prelims with the only time under 4:10.<\/p>\n

Kalisz checked in at 4:09.79, about three seconds off his season-best time of 4:06.99. He was followed closely by Great Britain’s\u00a0Max Litchfield<\/strong>, looking for his first major international medal after finishing fourth in the 200 IM. Litchfield touched in 4:10.57.<\/p>\n

Hungary’s\u00a0David Verraszto\u00a0<\/strong>rode a partisan crowd to the third seed, as he touched in 4:11.89, and two-time defending champion\u00a0Daiya Seto\u00a0<\/strong>of Japan finished exactly one second back in 4:12.89, good for the fourth overall seed.<\/p>\n

Brazil’s\u00a0Brandon Almeida\u00a0<\/strong>took sixth in 4:13.13, while American\u00a0Jay Litherland\u00a0<\/strong>out-dueled Japan’s\u00a0Kosuke Hagino<\/strong>\u00a0for second place behind Verraszto in their heat, 4:13.95 to 4:14.15. Hagino, the defending Olympic gold medalist in the event, qualified seventh for the final.<\/p>\n

Slovakia’s\u00a0Richard Nagy\u00a0<\/strong>qualified eighth in 4:!5.69.<\/p>\n

\"men-400-im-prelims\"<\/p>\n

Women’s 400 Medley Relay<\/h3>\n

The American women did not throw out their top team in the prelims of the women’s 400 medley relay at the FINA World Championships, but they still did plenty to claim the top seed for the final by more than a second. The team of\u00a0Olivia Smoliga<\/strong>\u00a0(59.52),\u00a0Katie Meili<\/strong>\u00a0(1:05.17),\u00a0Sarah Gibson<\/strong>\u00a0(58.36) and\u00a0Mallory Comerford\u00a0<\/strong>(52.90) combined to swim a 3:55.95.<\/p>\n

China qualified second in 3:57.12, using\u00a0Fu Yuanhui<\/strong>\u00a0(1:00.04),\u00a0Shi Jinglin<\/strong>\u00a0(1:06.55),\u00a0Zhang Yufei<\/strong>\u00a0(57.50) and\u00a0Zhu Menghui<\/strong>\u00a0(53.03). Canada’s\u00a0Kylie Masse\u00a0<\/strong>(58.86),\u00a0Kierra Smith<\/strong>\u00a0(1:07.20),\u00a0Rebecca Smith<\/strong>\u00a0(57.75) and\u00a0Sandrine Mainville\u00a0<\/strong>(53.36) qualified third in 3:57.17.<\/p>\n

The Americans should replace their entire team in the finals, with\u00a0Kathleen Baker<\/strong>,\u00a0Lilly King<\/strong>,\u00a0Kelsi Worrell\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Simone Manuel<\/strong>\u00a0poised to come on. Canada will insert\u00a0Penny Oleksiak<\/strong>\u00a0to swim fly and\u00a0Chantal Van Landeghem<\/strong>\u00a0to anchor.<\/p>\n

Russia, swimming without\u00a0Yulia Efimova<\/strong>, qualified fourth in 3:57.53, and Australia, sans\u00a0Emily Seebohm<\/strong>,\u00a0Emma McKeon<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0Bronte Campbell<\/strong>, was fifth in 3:58.74.<\/p>\n

Italy (4:00.03), Sweden (4:01.44) and Great Britain (4:01.78) also made finals. Sweden figures to deploy\u00a0Sarah Sjostrom\u00a0<\/strong>on their night relay.<\/p>\n

Men’s 400 Medley Relay<\/h3>\n

The American men will enter the final race of the FINA World Championships, the 400 medley relay, as gold-medal favorites after the so-called “B” team qualified first in prelims.\u00a0Ryan Murphy\u00a0<\/strong>(52.69),\u00a0Cody Miller\u00a0<\/strong>(58.99),\u00a0Tim Phillips\u00a0<\/strong>(50.74) and\u00a0Townley Haas<\/strong>\u00a0(47.24) qualified in 3:29.66, which was faster than the time an American squad swam to win gold in the event at the last World Championships in Kazan.<\/p>\n

Matt Grevers<\/strong>,\u00a0Kevin Cordes<\/strong>,\u00a0Caeleb Dressel\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Nathan Adrian\u00a0<\/strong>figure to comprise the finals quartet, and all four won\u00a0medalsin their individual 100-meter events.<\/p>\n

Japan qualified second but almost two seconds back in 3:31.63.\u00a0Ryosuke Irie\u00a0<\/strong>(52.86),\u00a0Yasuhiro Koseki<\/strong>\u00a0(59.11),\u00a0Yuki Kobori\u00a0<\/strong>(51.27) and\u00a0Shinri Shioura\u00a0<\/strong>(48.39) made up that team. Russia’s\u00a0Grigory Tarasevich\u00a0<\/strong>(53.71),\u00a0Anton Chupkov\u00a0<\/strong>(59.06),\u00a0Daniil Pakhomov\u00a0<\/strong>(51.55) and\u00a0Danila Izotov\u00a0<\/strong>(47.80) took third in 3:32.12.<\/p>\n

Great Britain qualified fourth in 3:32.35, but\u00a0Adam Peaty\u00a0<\/strong>did not compete in prelims and is bound to make a big impact in the finals. Brazil took fourth in 3:32.38, followed by Hungary (3:33.35), China (3:33.50) and Belarus (3:33.83).<\/p>\n

Other notable names figuring to come in for the finals in the evening include Russia’s\u00a0Kirill Prigoda<\/strong>, the bronze medalist in the 100 breast, and China’s\u00a0Xu Jiayu<\/strong>, the World Champion in the 100 back.<\/p>\n

In a stunner, Australia missed the final in ninth place.\u00a0Mitch Larkin<\/strong>\u00a0posted a very disappointing 54.21 leadoff split, and the team could never recover.<\/p>\n
