During the seventh morning of prelims at the FINA World Championships in Budapest,\u00a0Sarah Sjostrom\u00a0<\/strong>rebounded from a disappointing silver medal in the women’s 100 free as she claimed the top spot in the 50 free prelims, while\u00a0Lilly King\u00a0<\/strong>edged out\u00a0Yulia Efimova\u00a0<\/strong>for the top seed in the 50 breast, and the final heat of the men’s 1500 produced some quick times.<\/p>\n

Women’s 50 Free<\/h3>\n

The morning after\u00a0Simone Manuel<\/strong>\u00a0ran her down to win the World title in the women’s 100 free, Sweden’s\u00a0Sarah Sjostrom\u00a0<\/strong>took down Manuel head-to-head in the prelims of the 50 free.<\/p>\n

Sjostrom won the heat in 24.08, easily the top qualifying time but still short of her world-leading time of 23.83. Manuel, of the United States, finished second in the heat at 24.54 and fourth overall to advance to the semis.<\/p>\n

Denmark’s\u00a0Pernille Blume<\/strong>, who edged out Manuel for Olympic gold last summer and took bronze in the 100 free, qualified second in 24.32, and 2012 Olympic gold medalist\u00a0Ranomi Kromowidjojo\u00a0<\/strong>took third for the Netherlands in 24.53. Australia’s\u00a0Bronte Campbell<\/strong>, the 2015 World Champion, qualified fifth in 24.61.<\/p>\n

Canada’s\u00a0Michelle Toro\u00a0<\/strong>ended up sixth with her time of 24.64, followed by China’s\u00a0Zhu Menghui<\/strong>\u00a0(24.64), France’s\u00a0Anna Santamans\u00a0<\/strong>(24.71) and a tie between Egypt’s\u00a0Farida Osman<\/strong>\u00a0and China’s\u00a0Liu Xiang<\/strong>\u00a0at 24.78. Osman’s time stands as a new African record.<\/p>\n

Belarus’\u00a0Aliaksandra Herasimenia\u00a0<\/strong>(24.82), Australia’s\u00a0Shayna Jack<\/strong>\u00a0(24.85), the USA’s\u00a0Abbey Weitzeil<\/strong>\u00a0(24.92), the Netherlands’\u00a0Tamara Van Vliet\u00a0<\/strong>(24.94), Canada’s\u00a0Sandrine Mainville\u00a0<\/strong>(24.99) and Japan’s\u00a0Rikako Ikee<\/strong>\u00a0(25.04) all made the semi-finals.<\/p>\n

Men’s 50 Back<\/h3>\n

Neither\u00a0Junya Koga\u00a0<\/strong>of Japan or\u00a0Camille Lacourt\u00a0<\/strong>of France swam the 100 back or any other event at the FINA World Championships, but those two posted the top prelim times in the 50 back. Koga swam a mark of 25.54, and Lacourt came in at 24.58.<\/p>\n

Lacourt is the defending World Champion in the event, and he has already declared this World Championships to be his final meet.<\/p>\n

China’s\u00a0Xu Jiayu<\/strong>\u00a0edged out the USA’s\u00a0Matt Grevers<\/strong>\u00a0by four hundredths\u00a0<\/strong>for gold in the men’s 100 back, and the two were even closer in prelims, tying for third in 24.78. France’s\u00a0Jeremy Stravius\u00a0<\/strong>took fifth in 24.80, while Israel’s\u00a0Jonaton Kopelev\u00a0<\/strong>tied the USA’s\u00a0Justin Ress\u00a0<\/strong>for the sixth-best time, with a 24.86.<\/p>\n

Russia’s\u00a0Grigory Tarasevich<\/strong>\u00a0qualified eighth in 24.88, and also breaking 25 seconds were Hungary’s\u00a0Richard Bohus\u00a0<\/strong>(24.93), Belarus’\u00a0Pavel Sankovich<\/strong>\u00a0(24.94) and Greece’s\u00a0Apostolos Christou<\/strong>\u00a0(24.99).<\/p>\n

Rounding out the semi-final qualifiers were South Korea’s\u00a0Won Youngjun<\/strong>\u00a0(25.10), Poland’s\u00a0Tomasz Polewska<\/strong>\u00a0(25.10), Brazil’s\u00a0Guilherme Guido\u00a0<\/strong>(25.13), Canada’s\u00a0Javier Acevedo\u00a0<\/strong>(25.16) and Indonesia’s\u00a0I Gede Siman Sudartawa\u00a0<\/strong>(25.17).<\/p>\n

Women’s 50 Breast<\/h3>\n

Lilly King\u00a0<\/strong>of the United States and\u00a0Yulia Efimova\u00a0<\/strong>of Russia have each won gold in one breaststroke event this week in Budapest, and the rubber match will take place in the 50. King took the top spot in prelims of the race with a 29.76, a tenth off her American record of 29.66 from last month, while Efimova took second in 29.99.<\/p>\n

Italy’s\u00a0Arianna Castiglioni\u00a0<\/strong>finished third in the morning in 30.33, just ahead of American\u00a0Katie Meili<\/strong>. Meili, who won a surprising silver ahead of Efimova in the 100 breast, qualified in 30.37. Sweden’s\u00a0Jennie Johansson\u00a0<\/strong>took fifth in 30.40.<\/p>\n

Lithuanian world record-holder\u00a0Ruta Meilutyte\u00a0<\/strong>touched in 30.58 for the sixth seed, ahead of Australia’s\u00a0Jessica Hansen\u00a0<\/strong>(30.59), Great Britain’s\u00a0Sarah Vasey\u00a0<\/strong>(30.71), Russia’s\u00a0Natalia Ivaneeva\u00a0<\/strong>(30.81) and Finland’s\u00a0Jenna Laukkanen\u00a0<\/strong>(30.82).<\/p>\n

Also making semis were Iceland’s\u00a0Hrafnhildur Luthersdottir\u00a0<\/strong>(30.88), Finland’s\u00a0Veera Kivirinta\u00a0<\/strong>(30.89), Italy’s\u00a0Martina Carrano\u00a0<\/strong>(30.92),\u00a0Japan’s\u00a0Satomi Suzuki<\/strong>\u00a0(30.95), Canada’s\u00a0Rachel Nicol\u00a0<\/strong>(31.02) and China’s\u00a0Suo Ran\u00a0<\/strong>(31.22).<\/p>\n

Mixed 400 Free Relay<\/h3>\n

The Americans edged out the Netherlands for the World title in the inaugural mixed 400 free relay at the FINA World Championships two years ago in Kazan, but it was the Dutch claiming the top seed over the USA for the event’s finals.\u00a0Ben Schwietert\u00a0<\/strong>(48.97),\u00a0Kyle Stolk\u00a0<\/strong>(48.06),\u00a0Femke Heemskerk\u00a0<\/strong>(52.77) and\u00a0Maud Van Der Meer\u00a0<\/strong>(54.09) combined to finish in 3:23.89.<\/p>\n

The American team of\u00a0Blake Pieroni\u00a0<\/strong>(48.23),\u00a0Townley Haas\u00a0<\/strong>(48.32),\u00a0Lia Neal\u00a0<\/strong>(53.98) and\u00a0Kelsi Worrell\u00a0<\/strong>(53.40) qualified four hundredths back in 3:23.93.<\/p>\n

Both teams will likely make changes for the final, with\u00a0Ranomi Kromowidjojo\u00a0<\/strong>coming in for the Netherlands, and\u00a0Simone Manuel<\/strong>,\u00a0Mallory Comerford<\/strong>,\u00a0Nathan Adrian\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Caeleb Dressel\u00a0<\/strong>all possibilities for the Americans (although Dressel’s busy event schedule makes his participation less likely).<\/p>\n

Canada’s team of\u00a0Yuri Kisil\u00a0<\/strong>(48.57),\u00a0Markus Thormeyer\u00a0<\/strong>(49.35),\u00a0Sandrine Mainville\u00a0<\/strong>(53.75) and\u00a0Chantal Van Landeghem\u00a0<\/strong>(53.40) qualified third in 3:25.07, and\u00a0Penny Oleksiak\u00a0<\/strong>could join the team at night.<\/p>\n

Also making the final were Hungary (3:25.45), Italy (3:25.71), Japan (3:26.91), Russia (3:26.94) and Australia (3:27.49).<\/p>\n

Men’s 1500 Free<\/h3>\n

Six of the eight qualifiers for the final of the men’s 1500 free final came out of the morning’s final heat, as Ukraine’s\u00a0Mykhailo Romanchuk<\/strong>\u00a0won a tight race with Italy’s\u00a0Gregorio Paltrinieri<\/strong>\u00a0to claim lane four for Sunday’s final.<\/p>\n

Romanchuk’s time of 14:44.11 ranks second in the world behind Paltrinieri’s 14:37.08 from April, while the Italian Olympic gold medalist touched in 14:44.31.<\/p>\n

Paltrinieri’s teammate,\u00a0Gabriele Detti<\/strong>, qualified third in 14:50.10. Detti has already taken gold this week in the 800 free and finished third\u00a0in the 400 free.<\/p>\n

The Czech Republic’s\u00a0Jan Micka\u00a0<\/strong>touched fourth in 14:55.47, followed by Poland’s\u00a0Wojciech Wojdak<\/strong>. Wojdak, fresh off a silver in the 800 free, was clocked at 14:57.39.<\/p>\n

Norway’s\u00a0Henrik Christiansen\u00a0<\/strong>took sixth in 14:57.41, while Australia’s\u00a0Mack Horton<\/strong>\u00a0ended up sneaking in with the No. 7 time, at 14:59.24. Finally, Ukraine joined Italy with two swimmers in the championship final as\u00a0Sergii Frolov\u00a0<\/strong>placed eighth in 14:59.32.<\/p>\n

Two other swimmers, South Korea’s\u00a0Park Tae Hwan\u00a0<\/strong>(14:59.44) and Egypt’s\u00a0Akram Mahmoud\u00a0<\/strong>(14:56.56), broke 15:00 but missed out on the final.<\/p>\n

Also missing out were the two Americans, as\u00a0True Sweetser\u00a0<\/strong>placed 16th in 15:07.38, and\u00a0Robert Finke\u00a0<\/strong>was 21nd in 15:15.15.<\/p>\n

China’s\u00a0Sun Yang<\/strong>, the world record-holder and 2012 Olympic gold medalist in the event, did not even compete. Sun won gold in the 200 and 400 free in Budapest but appeared exhausted after his 800 free, where he missed the final. He has not competed in a major final of the 1500 since winning gold at the 2013 World Championships.<\/p>\n
