HAIFA, Israel. July 17. OLYMPIC triple gold medalist and triple world record-holder Lenny Krayzelburg smashed the Maccabiah record in the 100 meter backstroke today, then announced he will not compete in further events due to an injured shoulder.<\/p>\n
Krayzelburg is scheduled for arthroscopic surgery on his shoulder when he returns to the US and is expected to be out of the water for four to six weeks.<\/p>\n
The US swimmer had been scheduled to swim in the 100m freestyle and 200m backstroke events, which were scheduled to take place yesterday at the Technion pool in Haifa, site of the Maccabiah swimming competition. <\/p>\n
Krayzelburg was an easy winner in the backstroke final, clocking 55.24 seconds, his personal best this year and well ahead of Israeli Hanan Lewvin, who touched in 1:00.07, and Steven Edell, USA, who was third in 1:00.50. Israel has two 55+ backstrokers but they did not compete here.<\/p>\n
The winning time time shattered the previous Maccabiah record of 58.08 seconds set in 1989 by American swimmer Marcello Yehoshua. (Krayzelburg actually beat the record in the morning trials with a time of 58.04 seconds). His personal best time for the event is the world-record 53.60 seconds he clocked at the Pan Pacific Championships in Sydney in August 1999.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
