CALGARY, Alberta, April 4. JUST weeks following their third straight CIS women's swimming title, the University of Calgary Dinos added one more Reason for optimism as they head into 2011-12.<\/p>\n
The Dinos announced Wednesday that former world record holder Amanda Reason has committed to the University of Calgary for the 2011-12 season.<\/p>\n
Reason, an Etobicoke, Ont. native who trains out of the Etobicoke Swim Club, joins Lindsay Delmar out of the University of Calgary Swim Club, a top butterfly and middle-distance swimmer, as committed recruits to the Dinos for next season.<\/p>\n
At the age of 15 in Montreal at the 2009 Canadian world championship trials, Reason made a splash in the 50-metre breaststroke with a clocking in 30.23 seconds. It was the first long course world record set by a Canadian woman in more than 20 years and put her squarely on the international scene. She posted a seventh-place finish at that summer's world championships in Rome.<\/p>\n
In addition to her outstanding ability in the breaststroke, Reason, 17, is a powerful freestyler as well. Her times in the 50- and 100-metre freestyle will make her an instant contender for CIS rookie-of-the-year honours next year, and she represented Canada on the freestyle relay squad at the short course world championships last December in Dubai.<\/p>\n
A veteran of the Junior Pan Pacific championships and the junior worlds, Reason is competing in Victoria this weekend at the Canadian worlds trials for another opportunity to attend the world championships this summer in China.<\/p>\n
"She will be a very strong swimmer for our program," said CIS coach of the year Mike Blondal. "She brings a strong work ethic and she can swim multiple events, and any time you can bring a world record holder to your team it has got to be a good thing."<\/p>\n
