No world records went down but there was plenty of fast swimming. <strong>Chase Kalisz<\/strong> and <strong>Caeleb Dressel<\/strong> had huge swims in the pool as they won titles in the 200 IM and 100 free respectively.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Etiene Medeiros<\/strong> and <strong>Mireia Belmonte<\/strong> won their titles in the 50 back and 200 fly as they won their first gold medals at the World Championships. The United States closed out the night with a win in the women&#8217;s 4&#215;200 free relay for their fourth straight World title in the event beating China.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/swimmingworld.azureedge.net\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/fina-world-championships-day-five-finals-heat-sheet.pdf\">Heat Sheets<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/results\/pdf\/2017-fina-world-championships-day-5-finals-results-day-5-international-elite-2017-07-27.pdf\">Results<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Tonight&#8217;s events:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Men&#8217;s 200 IM<\/li>\n<li>Women&#8217;s 100 Free (SF)<\/li>\n<li>Men&#8217;s 100 Free<\/li>\n<li>Women&#8217;s 50 Back<\/li>\n<li>Men&#8217;s 200 Breast (SF)<\/li>\n<li>Women&#8217;s 200 Fly<\/li>\n<li>Women&#8217;s 200 Breast (SF)<\/li>\n<li>Men&#8217;s 200 Back (SF)<\/li>\n<li>Women&#8217;s 4&#215;200 Free Relay<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 200 IM<\/h3>\n<p>It was the first time since 2001 that someone not named\u00a0<strong>Michael Phelps<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>Ryan Lochte<\/strong>\u00a0would stand on top of the podium in the 200 IM at the FINA World Championships. It wasn&#8217;t Phelps or Lochte but it was an American in\u00a0<strong>Chase Kalisz<\/strong>\u00a0winning the 200 IM final on Thursday night in Budapest with a 1:55.56 for the eighth straight gold medal for the United States in the 200 IM at Worlds. Kalisz held off\u00a0<strong>Kosuke Hagino<\/strong>\u00a0of Japan for the gold medal as Hagino finished with a 1:56.01.<\/p>\n<p>The bronze went to China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Wang Shun<\/strong>\u00a0as he was the only swimmer to break 28 on the last 50. Wang swam a 1:56.28. Great Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Max Litchfield<\/strong>\u00a0(1:56.86), Japan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Daiya Seto<\/strong>\u00a0(1:56.97), China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Qin Haiyang<\/strong>\u00a0(1:57.06), Germany&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Philip Heintz<\/strong>\u00a0(1:57.43) and Switzerland&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Jeremy Desplanches<\/strong>\u00a0(1:57.50) also competed in the final.<\/p>\n<p>The time for Qin is a new World Junior Record as he broke his record from semi-finals that was a 1:57.81. Sjostrom leads a pair of Americans in\u00a0<strong>Simone Manuel<\/strong>\u00a0(52.69) and\u00a0<strong>Mallory Comerford<\/strong>\u00a0(52.85). Manuel&#8217;s time was just off of Comerford&#8217;s 52.59 American Record from Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Denmark&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Pernille Blume<\/strong>\u00a0(52.99), Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Bronte Campbell<\/strong>\u00a0(53.04), Canada&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Penny Oleksiak<\/strong>\u00a0(53.05), Netherlands&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Ranomi Kromowidjojo<\/strong>\u00a0(53.09) and Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Emma McKeon<\/strong>\u00a0(53.20) will also join the top three in the final tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>Seven of the eight girls in Friday&#8217;s final have medaled individually in either the Olympics or World Championships as Comerford is the only one that has not. Previously the record had been a 47.33 set by\u00a0<strong>David Walters<\/strong>\u00a0in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>Comparative splits:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dressel (2017): 22.31, 24.86 = 47.17<\/li>\n<li>Dressel (2017): 22.29, 24.97 = 47.26<\/li>\n<li>Walters (2009): 22.78, 24.55 = 47.33<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Fellow American\u00a0<strong>Nathan Adrian<\/strong>\u00a0thundered to second, holding off a fast-charging\u00a0<strong>Mehdy Metella<\/strong>\u00a0of France. The two delivered similar times of 47.87 and 47.89 to round out the podium.<\/p>\n<p>Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Cameron McEvoy<\/strong>\u00a0picked up fourth overall with a 47.92, followed by a tie between Great Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Duncan Scott<\/strong>\u00a0and Brazil&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Marcelo Chierighini<\/strong>. Medeiros&#8217; time broke her South American Record from last night that was a 27.18. Medeiros and Fu missed\u00a0<strong>Zhao Jing&#8217;s<\/strong>\u00a0world record of 27.06 from 2009. It looked like Fu had the race in her hands but she may have taken an extra stroke at the wall that cost her the gold medal.<\/p>\n<p>Belarus&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Aliaksandra Herasimenia<\/strong>\u00a0finished in third up in lane 1 with a 27.23 to tie the European Record from\u00a0<strong>Daniela Samulski<\/strong>\u00a0of Germany from 2009. Chupkov used the only sub 32 second 50 on the last 50 to take the top seed. Chupkov will get pressure from world record holder\u00a0<strong>Ippei Watanabe<\/strong>\u00a0of Japan who is the second seed at 2:07.44.<\/p>\n<p>Great Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Ross Murdoch<\/strong>\u00a0(2:07.72), Japan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Yasuhiro Koseki<\/strong>\u00a0(2:07.80), USA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Kevin Cordes<\/strong>\u00a0(2:08.40), Russia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Ilya Khomenko<\/strong>\u00a0(2:08.58), Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Matthew Wilson<\/strong>\u00a0(2:08.64) and USA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Nic Fink<\/strong>\u00a0(2:08.80) will also swim in Friday&#8217;s final.<\/p>\n<p>Both the reigning Olympic champion (<strong>Dmitriy Balandin<\/strong>) and the defending World champion (<strong>Marco Koch<\/strong>) failed to advance past the semi-finals. Hentke won her first individual medal at the World Championships with her silver medal.<\/p>\n<p>Hungary&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Katinka Hosszu<\/strong>\u00a0picked up her second medal of the championships as she picked up bronze here with a 2:06.02. Xu went out fast under world record pace but came back to the field on the second half. Xu leads the semi-finals with a 1:54.79 ahead of Murphy (1:54.93) and Rylov (1:54.96).<\/p>\n<p>Russia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Kliment Kolesnikov<\/strong>\u00a0(1:55.15) broke the world junior record in the semi-finals as he broke his own record from the Russian Nationals earlier in the year when he went 1:55.49.
