He trailed Hungary&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Peter Bernek\u00a0<\/strong>by a full bodylength heading into the final 50 of their prelim heat, but Murphy accelerated down the stretch and posted the top time of the morning in 1:56.11.<\/p>\n<p>Bernek qualified second in 1:56.56, ahead of Lithuania&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Danas Rapsys\u00a0<\/strong>(1:56.67) and Russia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Kliment Kolesnikov<\/strong>\u00a0(1:56.74). China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Xu Jiayu<\/strong>, the World Champion in the 100 back, was fifth in 1:56.92.<\/p>\n<p>Japan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Ryosuke Irie<\/strong>\u00a0qualified sixth in 1:57.21, and Russia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Evgeny Rylov\u00a0<\/strong>was seventh in 1:57.28. They were followed by Hungary&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Adam Telegoy<\/strong>\u00a0(1:57.41), China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Li Guangyuan<\/strong>\u00a0(1:57.66), Great Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Luke Greenbank<\/strong>\u00a0(1:57.67) and Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Josh Beaver\u00a0<\/strong>(1:57.67).<\/p>\n<p>A trio of big names had to squeeze into the semi-finals as\u00a0Japan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Kosuke Hagino<\/strong>\u00a0was 12th in 1:57.97, while Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Mitch Larkin<\/strong>, the reigning World Champion, qualified 13th in 1:58.00. The USA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Jacob Pebley<\/strong>\u00a0took 14th in 1:58.05.<\/p>\n<p>Brazil&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Leonardo De Deus\u00a0<\/strong>(1:58.33) and New Zealand&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Corey Main<\/strong>\u00a0(1:58.34) earned the final two spots in the top 16. The United States&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Lilly King<\/strong>, the 100 breast World Champion and new world record-holder, won her heat in 2:24.28 to claim the No. 2 time overall.<\/p>\n<p>Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Taylor McKeown\u00a0<\/strong>took third in 2:24.31, and Spain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Jessica Vall<\/strong>\u00a0was fourth in 2:24.41. Making her international debut, the USA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Bethany Galat\u00a0<\/strong>took fifth in 2:24.56, one hundredth ahead of Canada&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Kierra Smith<\/strong>\u00a0(2:24.57).<\/p>\n<p>World record-holder\u00a0<strong>Rikke Moeller Pedersen<\/strong>\u00a0qualified seventh in 2:24.69, followed by the Czech Republic&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Martina Moravcikova<\/strong>\u00a0(2:25.26), Canada&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Ashley McGregor\u00a0<\/strong>(2:25.31) and China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Shi Jinglin<\/strong>\u00a0(2:25.39).<\/p>\n<p>Russia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Yulia Efimova<\/strong>, the No. 1-ranked swimmer in the world this year at 2:19.83, cruised to an 11th-place time of 2:25.63. Efimova will aim to bounce back after a disappointing third-place finish in Tuesday&#8217;s 100 breast final. Murdoch, at 2:08.98, was the only other man to crack 2:09.<\/p>\n<p>Japan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Ippei Watanabe<\/strong>, who earlier this year became the first man to break 2:07 in the event, qualified third at 2:09.30. China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Qin Haiyang<\/strong>\u00a0posted a World Junior Record of 2:09.39 to qualify fourth for semis.<\/p>\n<p>The USA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Kevin Cordes\u00a0<\/strong>(2:09.47), Italy&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Luca Pizzini<\/strong>\u00a0(2:09.86), the USA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Nic Fink<\/strong>\u00a0(2:09.90) and Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Matthew Wilson<\/strong>\u00a0(2:09.98) also broke 2:10 in prelims.<\/p>\n<p>China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Feilian Mao<\/strong>\u00a0(2:10.01) qualified ninth, while Kazakhstan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Dimitriy Balandin<\/strong>, the Olympic gold medalist from 2016, took 10th in 2:10.18. Sweden&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Erik Persson<\/strong>\u00a0(2:10.21), Japan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Yasuhiro Koseki<\/strong>\u00a0(2:!0.38) and Germany&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Marco Koch<\/strong>\u00a0(2:10.40) qualified 11th through 13th, respectively.
