The big story of the night was Italian <strong>Federica Pellegrini<\/strong> upsetting <strong>Katie Ledecky<\/strong> in the 200 free final with an amazing last 50. Fellow Italian <strong>Gabriele Detti<\/strong> used a similar tactic in the 800 free final as he won the race thanks to an amazing last 100.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chad Le Clos<\/strong> had a minor upset in the men&#8217;s 200 fly final as he held off Hungarian superstar <strong>Laszlo Cseh<\/strong> in the men&#8217;s 200 fly final. <strong>Adam Peaty<\/strong> missed his 50 breast world record but got under 26 seconds and won his second gold medal of the meet in the 50 breast.<\/p>\n<p>The United States all-star mixed medley relay team of\u00a0<strong>Matt Grevers<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Lilly King<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Caeleb Dressel<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Simone Manuel\u00a0<\/strong>broke the world record in the mixed medley relay that was set earlier in the prelims.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/results\/pdf\/2017-fina-world-championships-day-4-finals-results-day-4-international-elite-2017-07-26.pdf\">Results<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Tonight&#8217;s events:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Women&#8217;s 200 Free<\/li>\n<li>Men&#8217;s 100 Free (SF)<\/li>\n<li>Women&#8217;s 50 Back (SF)<\/li>\n<li>Men&#8217;s 200 Fly<\/li>\n<li>Men&#8217;s 50 Breast<\/li>\n<li>Women&#8217;s 200 Fly (SF)<\/li>\n<li>Men&#8217;s 200 IM (SF)<\/li>\n<li>Men&#8217;s 800 Free<\/li>\n<li>Mixed Medley Relay<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 200 Free<\/h3>\n<p>They say anything can happen on any given day. They say any person can be beat on any given day. Even if that means the unstoppable\u00a0<strong>Katie Ledecky<\/strong>. On Wednesday night at the 2017 FINA World Championships in Budapest, Ledecky was dealt her first loss in a major meet in the 200 free to\u00a0<strong>Federica Pellegrini<\/strong>\u00a0of Italy.<\/p>\n<p>The Italian world record holder shocked the field after her stellar last 50 with a 28.82 on the last 50 to win the 200 final with a 1:54.73. Pellegrini has now medaled at seven straight World Championships in the 200 free dating all the way back to 2005. She adds to the gold medals she won in 2009 and 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Pellegrini out swam Katie Ledecky and\u00a0<strong>Emma McKeon<\/strong>\u00a0who tied for second at 1:55.18. France&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Mehdy Metella<\/strong>\u00a0had the fastest time of the semi-finals with a 47.65 just ahead of Americans\u00a0<strong>Caeleb Dressel<\/strong>\u00a0(47.66) and\u00a0<strong>Nathan Adrian<\/strong>\u00a0(47.85).<\/p>\n<p>The Australian duo of\u00a0<strong>Cameron McEvoy<\/strong>\u00a0(47.95) and\u00a0<strong>Jack Cartwright<\/strong>\u00a0(47.97) will also have a good chance at the medals along with Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Duncan Scott<\/strong>\u00a0(48.10). Brazil&#8217;s Etiene Medeiros swam a 27.18 to just miss the record of 27.06 held by Zhao Jing of China from 2009. The time for Medeiros is a South American record. Medeiros is just ahead of China&#8217;s Fu Yuanhui (27.19) into tomorrow&#8217;s final.<\/p>\n<p>USA&#8217;s Kathleen Baker also broke an American Record with a 27.48 to beat Natalie Coughlin&#8217;s record of 27.51 from 2015. People thought he was done after failing to medal last summer in the 200 fly. People didn&#8217;t think he stood a chance against the Hungarians in their home crowd. But\u00a0<strong>Chad Le Clos<\/strong>\u00a0silenced all those doubters with a world title in the 200 butterfly on Wednesday in Budapest.<\/p>\n<p>Le Clos went out fast in the final with a 53.2 and held on for the gold medal with a 1:53.33 to hold off Hungarian\u00a0<strong>Laszlo Cseh<\/strong>\u00a0(1:53.72) and Japanese\u00a0<strong>Daiya Seto<\/strong>\u00a0(1:54.21). Peaty won the 50 breast on Wednesday night at the 2017 FINA World Championships in Budapest with a 25.99. Peaty ran away with the title away from Brazil&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Joao Gomes<\/strong>\u00a0(26.52) and South Africa&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Cameron van der Burgh<\/strong>\u00a0(26.60). The time for Gomes was a new South American Record.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Felipe Lima<\/strong>\u00a0(26.78),\u00a0<strong>Kevin Cordes<\/strong>\u00a0(26.80),\u00a0<strong>Fabio Scozzoli<\/strong>\u00a0(26.91),\u00a0<strong>Kirill Prigoda<\/strong>\u00a0(27.01) and<strong>\u00a0Ilya Shymanovich<\/strong>\u00a0(27.27) also swam in the A-final.<\/p>\n<p>Peaty repeats his World Title from 2015 and it is the third overall gold medal for Great Britain in the 50 breaststroke at the World Championships. They started the night with\u00a0<strong>Federica Pellegrini<\/strong>\u00a0stunning\u00a0<strong>Katie Ledecky<\/strong>\u00a0in the 200 free final and ended the individual events by placing two men on the podium in the 800 free.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gabriele Detti<\/strong>\u00a0used a 1:55.68 on his last 200 to over swim Poland&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Wojciech Wojdak<\/strong>\u00a0(7:41.73) and his Italian teammate\u00a0<strong>Gregorio Paltrinieri<\/strong>\u00a0(7:42.44). Wojdak and Paltrinieri had the lead at the 700 but Detti used a 28.33 penultimate 50 to draw even and eventually pull away to win his first individual world title. Detti won the title in a similar fashion to Pellegrini in the 200 earlier by sling-shotting by the leaders on the last 50 to snag the win.<\/p>\n<p>The time for Detti is a new European record.<\/p>\n<p>Norway&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Henrik Christiansen<\/strong>\u00a0(7:44.21), China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Sun Yang<\/strong>\u00a0(7:48.87), Austria&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Felix Aubock<\/strong>\u00a0(7:51.20), Germany&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Florian Wellbrock<\/strong>\u00a0(7:52.27) and United States&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Zane Grothe<\/strong>\u00a0(7:52.43) also swam in the final.<\/p>\n<p>Sun was going for his fourth straight World title in the 800 as China had won the last four titles in the event with\u00a0<strong>Zhang Lin<\/strong>\u00a0winning in 2009 before Sun won threes straight. Sun did not have the endurance to hang with the medalists. King (1:04.15) faced a field of mainly men as\u00a0<strong>Adam Peaty<\/strong>\u00a0moved Great Britain up into contention.<\/p>\n<p>King touched the wall and it was all\u00a0<strong>Caeleb Dressel<\/strong>. The sprint phenom chased down Australia, Canada, China, Great Britain, and Russia to deliver the lead to\u00a0<strong>Simone Manuel<\/strong>\u00a0with a sizzling 49.92 split. Manuel held the lead, unleashing a 52.17 split to power Team USA to a combined World Record time of 3:38.56.<\/p>\n<p>The race for silver went to Australia (3:41.21) and there was a tie for bronze with Canada and China (3:41.25) touching simultaneously. The Aussies saw stellar splits from the ladies as\u00a0<strong>Emma McKeon\u00a0<\/strong>(56.51) and\u00a0<strong>Bronte Campbell\u00a0<\/strong>(52.30) finished them off. Canada also led off with a solid swim from\u00a0<strong>Kylie Masse<\/strong>\u00a0on backstroke as she went 58.22. Masse could not set a world record on the lead-off even if she went faster than her 58.10 from yesterday. The Canadians were also brought home by\u00a0<strong>Penny Oleksiak\u00a0<\/strong>(56.18) and\u00a0<strong>Yuri Kisil\u00a0<\/strong>(47.71).<\/p>\n<p>Great Britain (3:41.56), Russia (3:43.02), Germany (3:46.03) and Italy (3:46.33) also competed in the A-final.
