He qualified first in the event&#8217;s prelims in 1:56.46, just off his second-ranked time of 1:56.01.<\/p>\n<p>The American who will attempt to fill the shoes of Phelps and Lochte,\u00a0<strong>Chase Kalisz<\/strong>, used a strong breaststroke leg to pull up alongside Hagino in the final heat, and he ended up finishing just behind in 1:56.48, improving on his fourth-ranked time of 1:56.51. Great Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Max Litchfield\u00a0<\/strong>was third in 1:56.64, posting the No. 5 time in the world rankings.<\/p>\n<p>Japan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Daiya Seto<\/strong>, seeded first for Wednesday night&#8217;s 200 fly final, was fifth in 1:57.55, and he was followed by Switzerland&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Jeremy Desplanches\u00a0<\/strong>(1:57.59), Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Clyde Lewis\u00a0<\/strong>(1:58.06) and Germany&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Phillip Heintz\u00a0<\/strong>(1:58.99).<\/p>\n<p>China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/chinas-qin-haiyang-lowers-world-junior-record-in-mens-200-im\/\" target=\"_blank\">Qin Haiyang\u00a0<\/a><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/chinas-qin-haiyang-lowers-world-junior-record-in-mens-200-im\/\">broke the World Junior Record<\/a> with a time of 1:59.01, qualifying eighth for the semis, while his heralded countryman, Olympic silver medalist\u00a0<strong>Wang Shun<\/strong>, ended up 11th in 1:59.56.<\/p>\n<p>Greece&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Andreas Vazaios\u00a0<\/strong>was ninth in 1:59.29, and Israel&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Yomar Toumarkin<\/strong> finished 10th in 1:59.49.
