Great Britain’s\u00a0Adam Peaty\u00a0<\/strong>set the first men’s world record of the 2017 FINA World Championships during the third day of prelims when he took down his old global standard in the men’s 50 breast by three tenths of a second.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, Italy took two top seeds as\u00a0Federica Pellegrini\u00a0<\/strong>qualified first in the women’s 200 free and Gregorio Paltrinieri\u00a0<\/strong>did the same in the men’s 800 free, while\u00a0Hungary’s own\u00a0Laszlo Cseh\u00a0<\/strong>topped heats of the men’s 200 fly.<\/p>\n

Full Results<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

Men’s 50 Breast<\/h3>\n

Adam Peaty<\/strong>\u00a0scorched the competition in prelims of the men’s 50 breast, finishing more than three hundredths ahead of the previous World Record of 26.42 with a 26.10.<\/p>\n

The previous World Record was owned by Peaty and posted at the 2015 FINA World Championships in Kazan, Russia and doubled as the Championship Record.<\/p>\n

Today’s new record marks the third time that Peaty has set the World Record in the 50 meter breast:<\/p>\n

  • 2014 – 26.62 (European Championships)<\/li>\n
  • 2015 – 26.42 (FINA World Championships in Kazan)<\/li>\n
  • 2017 – 26.10 (FINA World Championships in Budapest)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    He now leads the top 16 qualifiers going into tonight’s semi-finals heats.<\/p>\n

    South Africa’s\u00a0Cameron van der Burgh<\/strong>\u00a0picked up the second place swim with a record-breaking swim of his own. His time of 26.54 bests the South African National Record in the 50 breast. The previous record, owned by van der Burgh, was a 26.62 from the 2015 FINA World Championships.<\/p>\n

    Brazil’s\u00a0Joao Gomes Junior<\/strong>\u00a0grabbed the third place seed with a time of 26.67, followed closely by the USA’s\u00a0Kevin Cordes<\/strong>\u00a0and his time of 26.83.<\/p>\n

    Kirill Prigoda<\/strong>\u00a0of Russia took fifth in prelims with a 26.91, just ahead of Brazil’s\u00a0Felipe Lima’s<\/strong>\u00a026.93.<\/p>\n

    Belarus’\u00a0Ilya Shymanovich<\/strong>\u00a0and Italy’s\u00a0Fabio Scozzoli<\/strong>\u00a0were seventh and eighth in prelims with times of 27.01 and 27.04 respectively.<\/p>\n

    Also qualifying for tonight’s semi-finals were Italy’s\u00a0Nicolo Martinenghi<\/strong>\u00a0(27.08), Japan’s\u00a0Yasuhiro Koseki<\/strong>\u00a0(27.21), Lithuania’s\u00a0Giedrius\u00a0<\/strong>Titenis<\/b>\u00a0(27.24), China’s\u00a0Yan Zibei<\/strong>\u00a0(27.25), Serbia’s\u00a0Caba Siladi<\/strong>\u00a0(27.27), Sweden’s\u00a0Johannes Skagius<\/strong>\u00a0(27.27), and the USA’s\u00a0Cody Miller<\/strong>\u00a0(27.31).<\/p>\n

    A swim-off took place for the sixteenth spot as Russia’s\u00a0Vsevolod Zanko<\/strong>, the Netherlands’\u00a0Arno Kamminga<\/strong>\u00a0and Slovenia’s\u00a0Peter Stevens<\/strong>\u00a0delivered matching times of 27.39.<\/p>\n

    Stevens\u00a0in the three-way swim off and will move on to semi-finals of the men’s 50 breast. Stevens led the swift 50-meters from start-to-finish, posting the fastest time of the trio at a 27.38 over Zanko’s 27.41 and Kamminga’s 27.43.<\/p>\n

    Women’s 200 Free<\/h3>\n

    Italy’s\u00a0Federica Pellegrini<\/strong>, the 2009 and 2011 World Champion in the women’s 200 free as well as the world record-holder, laid down the time to beat in the event’s morning prelims. She came in at 1:56.07 to finish two tenths ahead of Olympic gold medalist\u00a0Katie Ledecky<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    Ledecky, already a winner in Budapest in the 400 free, qualified second in 1:56.27, and hometown favorite\u00a0Katinka Hosszu<\/strong>\u00a0qualified third in 1:56.43. Australia’s\u00a0Emma McKeon<\/strong>, the 100 fly silver medalist, and Hong Kong’s\u00a0Siobhan Haughey<\/strong>\u00a0both broke 1:57 as well, finishing with respective times of 1:56.61 and 1:56.62.<\/p>\n

    American\u00a0Leah Smith\u00a0<\/strong>took sixth in 1:57.04, and she was followed closely by the Netherlands’\u00a0Femke Heemskerk<\/strong>\u00a0(1:57.06), Russia’s\u00a0Veronika Popova\u00a0<\/strong>(1:57.06), Sweden’s\u00a0Michelle Coleman<\/strong>\u00a0(1:57.15) and France’s\u00a0Charlotte Bonnet\u00a0<\/strong>(1:57.34).<\/p>\n

    Also making the semi-finals were Japan’s\u00a0Chihiro Igarashi\u00a0<\/strong>(1:57.67), China’s\u00a0Li Bingjie\u00a0<\/strong>(1:57.79) and\u00a0Ai Yanhan\u00a0<\/strong>(1:58.04), Canada’s\u00a0Katerine Savard\u00a0<\/strong>(1:58.16) and\u00a0Mary-Sophie Harvey\u00a0<\/strong>(1:58.38) and the Netherlands’\u00a0Robin Neumann<\/strong>\u00a0(1:58.66).<\/p>\n

    Men’s 200 Fly<\/h3>\n

    Laszlo Cseh<\/strong>\u00a0of Hungary charged ahead of the competition in prelims of the men’s 200 fly to a roaring home crowd. Cseh grabbed the top qualifying time out of prelims with a time of 1:54.08.<\/p>\n

    Japan’s\u00a0Daiya Seto<\/strong>\u00a0picked up the second place seed with a time of 1:54.89, followed by denmark’s\u00a0Viktor Bromer<\/strong>\u00a0and his time of 1:55.13.<\/p>\n

    Antani Ivanov<\/strong>\u00a0of Bulgaria turned in a fourth place qualifying time of 1:55.55, while South Africa’s\u00a0Chad le Clos<\/strong>\u00a0grabbed the fifth place seed with a 1:55.90.<\/p>\n

    Japan’s\u00a0Masato Sakai<\/strong>\u00a0qualified sixth overall close on le Clos’ heels with a time of 1:55.94, just ahead of Hungary’s\u00a0Tamas Kenderesi’s<\/strong>\u00a01:55.96.<\/p>\n

    Jack Conger<\/strong>\u00a0of the USA rounded out the top eight qualifiers.<\/p>\n

    Also returning for tonight’s semi-finals will be Russia’s\u00a0Daniil Pakhomov\u00a0<\/strong>(1:56.07), Poland’s\u00a0Jan Switkowski<\/strong>\u00a0(1:56.20), the USA’s\u00a0Pace Clark<\/strong>\u00a0(1:56.23), Italy’s\u00a0Giacomo Carini<\/strong>\u00a0(1:56.52), Australia’s\u00a0David Morgan<\/strong>\u00a0(1:56.57), Colombia’s\u00a0Jonathan Gomez\u00a0<\/strong>(1:56.60), Australia’s\u00a0Grant Irvine<\/strong>\u00a0(1:56.61), and Brazil’s\u00a0(Leonardo de Deus<\/strong>\u00a0(1:56.71).<\/p>\n

    Men’s 800 Free<\/h3>\n

    Italy’s\u00a0Gregorio Paltrinieri\u00a0<\/strong>posted the top time coming out of prelims in the men’s 800 free. He won his heat in 7:45.31, about one second ahead of Poland’s\u00a0Wojciech Wojdak<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    Wojdak ended up qualifying second in 7:46.39, and third went to Norway’s\u00a0Henrik Christiansen<\/strong>\u00a0in 7:47.61. The No. 4 seed also came from that same heat as Austria’s\u00a0Felix Auboeck<\/strong>\u00a0touched in 7:49.24.<\/p>\n

    In the final heat of the event, China’s\u00a0Sun Yang\u00a0<\/strong>finished just ahead of Italy’s\u00a0Gabriele Detti<\/strong>. Sun touched in 7:49.28, while Detti came in at 7:49.67. The duo won gold and bronze, respectively, in Sunday’s 400 free.<\/p>\n

    Germany’s\u00a0Florian Wellbrock<\/strong>\u00a0qualified seventh for the final in 7:50.89, and the United States’\u00a0Zane Grothe\u00a0<\/strong>took eighth in 7:50.97.<\/p>\n

    Just missing the final were Egypt’s\u00a0Akram Mahmoud\u00a0<\/strong>(7:51.41) and the USA’s\u00a0Clark Smith<\/strong>\u00a0(7:51.83), while Australia’s\u00a0Mack Horton<\/strong>, the silver medalist in the 400 free Sunday, scratched out of the event to rest up for the 800 free relay and 1500 free later in the week.<\/p>\n
