﻿{"id":268073,"date":"2017-07-25T02:29:02","date_gmt":"2017-07-25T09:29:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=268073"},"modified":"2017-07-25T04:01:16","modified_gmt":"2017-07-25T11:01:16","slug":"2017-fina-world-championships-day-three-prelims-live-recap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/2017-fina-world-championships-day-three-prelims-live-recap\/","title":{"rendered":"Morning Recap: Adam Peaty&#8217;s World Record in 50 Breast Highlights Day 3 Prelims in Budapest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Great Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Adam Peaty\u00a0<\/strong>set the first men&#8217;s world record of the 2017 FINA World Championships during the third day of prelims when he took down his old global standard in the men&#8217;s 50 breast by three tenths of a second.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, Italy took two top seeds as\u00a0<strong>Federica Pellegrini\u00a0<\/strong>qualified first in the women&#8217;s 200 free and <strong>Gregorio Paltrinieri\u00a0<\/strong>did the same in the men&#8217;s 800 free, while\u00a0Hungary&#8217;s own\u00a0<strong>Laszlo Cseh\u00a0<\/strong>topped heats of the men&#8217;s 200 fly.<\/p>\n<p>Read below for full coverage of each event.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/results\/pdf\/2017-fina-world-championships-day-three-prelims-day-3-international-elite-2017-07-23.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Full Results<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 50 Breast<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Adam Peaty<\/strong>\u00a0scorched the competition in prelims of the men&#8217;s 50 breast, finishing more than three hundredths ahead of the previous World Record of 26.42 with a 26.10.<\/p>\n<p>The previous World Record was owned by Peaty and posted at the 2015 FINA World Championships in Kazan, Russia and doubled as the Championship Record.<\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s new record marks the third time that Peaty has set the World Record in the 50 meter breast:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2014 &#8211; 26.62 (European Championships)<\/li>\n<li>2015 &#8211; 26.42 (FINA World Championships in Kazan)<\/li>\n<li>2017 &#8211; 26.10 (FINA World Championships in Budapest)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>He now leads the top 16 qualifiers going into tonight&#8217;s semi-finals heats.<\/p>\n<p>South Africa&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Cameron van der Burgh<\/strong>\u00a0picked up the second place swim with a record-breaking swim of his own. His time of 26.54 bests the South African National Record in the 50 breast. The previous record, owned by van der Burgh, was a 26.62 from the 2015 FINA World Championships.<\/p>\n<p>Brazil&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Joao Gomes Junior<\/strong>\u00a0grabbed the third place seed with a time of 26.67, followed closely by the USA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Kevin Cordes<\/strong>\u00a0and his time of 26.83.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kirill Prigoda<\/strong>\u00a0of Russia took fifth in prelims with a 26.91, just ahead of Brazil&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Felipe Lima&#8217;s<\/strong>\u00a026.93.<\/p>\n<p>Belarus&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Ilya Shymanovich<\/strong>\u00a0and Italy&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Fabio Scozzoli<\/strong>\u00a0were seventh and eighth in prelims with times of 27.01 and 27.04 respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Also qualifying for tonight&#8217;s semi-finals were Italy&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Nicolo Martinenghi<\/strong>\u00a0(27.08), Japan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Yasuhiro Koseki<\/strong>\u00a0(27.21), Lithuania&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Giedrius\u00a0<\/strong><b>Titenis<\/b>\u00a0(27.24), China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Yan Zibei<\/strong>\u00a0(27.25), Serbia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Caba Siladi<\/strong>\u00a0(27.27), Sweden&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Johannes Skagius<\/strong>\u00a0(27.27), and the USA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Cody Miller<\/strong>\u00a0(27.31).<\/p>\n<p>A swim-off took place for the sixteenth spot as Russia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Vsevolod Zanko<\/strong>, the Netherlands&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Arno Kamminga<\/strong>\u00a0and Slovenia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Peter Stevens<\/strong>\u00a0delivered matching times of 27.39.<\/p>\n<p>Stevens\u00a0in the three-way swim off and will move on to semi-finals of the men&#8217;s 50 breast. She came in at 1:56.07 to finish two tenths ahead of Olympic gold medalist\u00a0<strong>Katie Ledecky<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Ledecky, already a winner in Budapest in the 400 free, qualified second in 1:56.27, and hometown favorite\u00a0<strong>Katinka Hosszu<\/strong>\u00a0qualified third in 1:56.43. He won his heat in 7:45.31, about one second ahead of Poland&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Wojciech Wojdak<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Wojdak ended up qualifying second in 7:46.39, and third went to Norway&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Henrik Christiansen<\/strong>\u00a0in 7:47.61. The No. 4 seed also came from that same heat as Austria&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Felix Auboeck<\/strong>\u00a0touched in 7:49.24.<\/p>\n<p>In the final heat of the event, China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Sun Yang\u00a0<\/strong>finished just ahead of Italy&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Gabriele Detti<\/strong>. Sun touched in 7:49.28, while Detti came in at 7:49.67. The duo won gold and bronze, respectively, in Sunday&#8217;s 400 free.<\/p>\n<p>Germany&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Florian Wellbrock<\/strong>\u00a0qualified seventh for the final in 7:50.89, and the United States&#8217;\u00a0<strong>Zane Grothe\u00a0<\/strong>took eighth in 7:50.97.<\/p>\n<p>Just missing the final were Egypt&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Akram Mahmoud\u00a0<\/strong>(7:51.41) and the USA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Clark Smith<\/strong>\u00a0(7:51.83), while Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Mack Horton<\/strong>, the silver medalist in the 400 free Sunday, scratched out of the event to
