The second night of action from the pool at Budapest at the 2017 FINA World Championships featured lots of exciting action.\u00a0Hungarian Katinka Hosszu<\/strong> delivered a gold medal for the home crowd with her third straight 200 IM World Title. Adam Peaty<\/strong> and Sarah Sjostrom<\/strong> just missed their World Records in their respective events but they defended their 2015 World Titles in the process. Great Britain picked up another gold on the night with Ben Proud<\/strong> in the 50 fly.<\/p>\n

Americans picked up medals from Kevin Cordes<\/strong> (silver) in the 100 breast, Kelsi Worrell<\/strong> (bronze) in the 100 fly and Madisyn Cox<\/strong> (bronze) in the 200 IM.<\/p>\n

Results<\/a><\/p>\n

Men’s 100 Breast<\/h3>\n

It wasn’t a world record, but Brit\u00a0Adam Peaty\u00a0<\/strong>repeated his World Championship gold from 2015 on Monday night in Budapest at the FINA World Championships. Peaty won the race with a 57.47 and a championship record. Peaty was just shy of his 57.13 world record from last year.<\/p>\n

Kevin Cordes\u00a0<\/strong>picked up a silver in the race with a 58.79 and Russian\u00a0Kirill Prigoda\u00a0<\/strong>was third at 59.05. Prigoda’s time was a Russian national record.<\/p>\n

Japan’s\u00a0Yasuhiro Koseki\u00a0<\/strong>(59.10), USA’s\u00a0Cody Miller\u00a0<\/strong>(59.11), Lithuania’s\u00a0Andrius Sidlauskas\u00a0<\/strong>(59.21),\u00a0China’s\u00a0Yan Zibei\u00a0<\/strong>(59.42) and Britain’s\u00a0Ross Murdoch\u00a0<\/strong>(59.45) also swam in the championship final.<\/p>\n

Peaty’s win is the third gold medal for Britain in the 100 breast at the World Championships. He joins himself (2015) and\u00a0David Wilkie\u00a0<\/strong>(1975) as World Championship winners in this event.<\/p>\n

Women’s 100 Fly<\/h3>\n

Similar to\u00a0Adam Peaty\u00a0<\/strong>in the 100 breast,\u00a0Sarah Sjostrom\u00a0<\/strong>was not expected to lose in the women’s 100 fly final, as she was chasing her world record from Rio last summer. Sjostrom just missed the record as she went 55.53 to break the championship record, but missed her best time of 55.48.<\/p>\n

She got some pressure from either side of her as Australian\u00a0Emma McKeon\u00a0<\/strong>(56.18) and American\u00a0Kelsi Worrell\u00a0<\/strong>(56.37) pushed her the whole race. The time for McKeon is an Australian record to move past 2008 Olympic champion\u00a0Libby Trickett<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Canada’s\u00a0Penny Oleksiak\u00a0<\/strong>(56.94), South Korea’s\u00a0An Sehyeon\u00a0<\/strong>(57.07), Japan’s\u00a0Rikako Ikee\u00a0<\/strong>(57.08), Russia’s\u00a0Svetlana Chimrova\u00a0<\/strong>(57.24) and China’s\u00a0Zhang Yufei\u00a0<\/strong>(57.51) also competed in the championship final.<\/p>\n

This is Sjostrom’s fourth overall World Championship gold medal as she previously won in 2009, 2013 and 2015.<\/p>\n

Men’s 100 Back (SF)<\/h3>\n

Chinese swimmer\u00a0Xu Jiayu\u00a0<\/strong>cruised over the last 25 in his semi-final heat to grab the number one seed for the 100 back tomorrow night with a 52.44. Xu was out under world record pace and let up over the last few meters in his swim. He leads Americans\u00a0Ryan Murphy\u00a0<\/strong>(52.95) and\u00a0Matt Grevers\u00a0<\/strong>(52.97) into Tuesday’s final.<\/p>\n

Japan’s\u00a0Ryosuke Irie\u00a0<\/strong>(53.02), Russia’s\u00a0Grigory Tarasevich\u00a0<\/strong>(53.06), Australia’s\u00a0Mitchell Larkin\u00a0<\/strong>(53.19), Brazil’s\u00a0Guilherme Guido\u00a0<\/strong>(53.71) and New Zealand’s\u00a0Corey Main\u00a0<\/strong>(53.76) will also swim in the A-final tomorrow.<\/p>\n

There was a tie for ninth place so a swim-off was in order for first alternate.\u00a0Russian\u00a0Kliment Kolesnikov<\/strong>\u00a0broke the world junior record with a 53.38 in the 100 back swim-off. Kolesnikov lowered his own world junior record that was a 53.65 from July 2016.<\/p>\n

Kolesnikov beat China’s\u00a0Li Guangyuan<\/strong>\u00a0who was a 53.70. The two tied for ninth at 53.84. Kolesnikov won’t swim in tomorrow’s final but his 53.38 would have been seventh in the semi-finals. Kolesnikov is just 17 years old so he has another year to lower his world junior record.<\/p>\n

Women’s 100 Breast (SF)<\/h3>\n

In what will be must-see television, Russia’s\u00a0Yulia Efimova<\/strong>\u00a0will be the top seed in the 100 breast at the FINA World Championships in Budapest in tomorrow’s final. Efimova got oh-so-close to\u00a0Ruta Meilutyte’s<\/strong>\u00a0world record of 1:04.35 with a 1:04.36. Efimova leads Olympic champion\u00a0Lilly King<\/strong>, who was second at 1:04.53. The two will clash heads in a much anticipated rematch after last summer’s epic duel in Rio.<\/p>\n

Don’t take your eyes off of world record holder Meilutyte who is third at 1:05.06. Meilutyte will not want to see her world record go down and she will be looking to do better than her disappointing swim in Rio last summer.<\/p>\n

American\u00a0Katie Meili<\/strong>\u00a0(1:05.48), China’s\u00a0Shi Jinglin<\/strong>\u00a0(1:06.47), Spain’s\u00a0Jessica Vall<\/strong>\u00a0(1:06.62), Canada’s\u00a0Kierra Smith<\/strong>\u00a0(1:06.62) and Great Britain’s\u00a0Sarah Vasey<\/strong>\u00a0(1:06.81) will compete in tomorrow’s final.<\/p>\n

Men’s 50 Fly<\/h3>\n

Great Britain got its second gold of the night with\u00a0Ben Proud\u00a0<\/strong>in the 50 butterfly A-final. Proud went 22.75 to win the gold medal in the 50 fly to just miss the championship record of 22.67 from\u00a0Milorad Cavic\u00a0<\/strong>set in 2009. Proud wins his first individual medal at either the Olympics or World Championships.<\/p>\n

Brazil’s\u00a0Nicholas Santos<\/strong>\u00a0(22.79) and Ukraine’s\u00a0Andrii Govorov<\/strong>\u00a0(22.84) also picked up individual medals in the race. Those three out-swam American\u00a0Caeleb Dressel<\/strong>\u00a0(22.89) and Singapore’s\u00a0Joseph Schooling<\/strong>\u00a0(22.95) who placed fourth and fifth.<\/p>\n

Brazil’s\u00a0Henrique Martins<\/strong>\u00a0(23.14), Ukraine’s\u00a0Andrii Khloptsov<\/strong>\u00a0(23.31) and American\u00a0Tim Phillips<\/strong>\u00a0(23.38) also swam in the A-final.<\/p>\n

Proud’s swim is the first time anyone from Great Britain has medaled in the event since 2001 when\u00a0Mark Foster<\/strong>\u00a0was third.<\/p>\n

Women’s 100 Back (SF)<\/h3>\n

It seems to be the theme of the night. World records keep getting rattled but not broken.\u00a0Kylie Masse<\/strong>\u00a0got oh-so-close to the 100 back record with a 58.18. She just missed\u00a0Gemma Spofforth’s<\/strong>\u00a0record of 58.12 from 2009. Masse broke her Canadian record from earlier this year that was a 58.21.<\/p>\n

Masse leads a quality final that includes the defending world champion\u00a0Emily Seebohm<\/strong>\u00a0of Australia. Seebohm (58.85), American\u00a0Kathleen Baker<\/strong>\u00a0(59.03), American\u00a0Olivia Smoliga<\/strong>\u00a0(59.07), Russian\u00a0Anastasia Fesikova<\/strong>\u00a0(59.26), Czech\u00a0Simona Baumrtova<\/strong>\u00a0(59.65), Russian\u00a0Daria Ustinova<\/strong>\u00a0(59.74) and\u00a0Kathleen Dawson<\/strong>\u00a0(59.82) will also swim in the A-final tomorrow.<\/p>\n

Men’s 200 Free (SF)<\/h3>\n

The British swimmers keep churning out great swims on night two of the World Championships.\u00a0James Guy\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Duncan Scott\u00a0<\/strong>lead a very fast 200 free field into tomorrow with Scott leading the way at 1:45.16. Guy was second at 1:45.18. The two Brits lead reigning Olympic champ\u00a0Sun Yang<\/strong>\u00a0of China (1:45.24) and\u00a0Townley Haas<\/strong>\u00a0of the US (1:45.43).<\/p>\n

It is a very fast 200 free final as eighth place was 1:46.28, with seven of the finalists turning in 1:45’s in the semi’s. Russians\u00a0Aleksandr Krasnykh<\/strong>\u00a0(1:45.47) and\u00a0Mikhail Dovgalyuk<\/strong>\u00a0(1:45.74) will join Hungarian\u00a0Dominik Kozma<\/strong>\u00a0(1:45.87) and Korean\u00a0Park Tae Hwan<\/strong>\u00a0(1:46.28) in the final tomorrow.<\/p>\n

Guy will be looking to defend his world title from 2015 as Sun will be looking to back up his Olympic gold from last summer, as well as win his second gold of the meet after winning the 400 on Sunday night.<\/p>\n

Women’s 200 IM<\/h3>\n

In front of a rowdy Hungarian crowd,\u00a0Katinka Hosszu<\/strong>\u00a0delivered a dominating performance in the 200 IM for her third straight world title in the event. Hosszu gave her home fans something to cheer about as she went 2:07.00 to win the world title ahead of Japan’s\u00a0Yui Ohashi<\/strong>\u00a0(2:07.91). Hosszu led from start to finish in the race ahead of Ohashi.<\/p>\n

American\u00a0Madisyn Cox<\/strong>\u00a0had a late charge over the second half to snag the bronze medal with a 2:09.71. Cox stated in her NBC interview after the race that she channeled the Hungarian cheers for herself and pretended they were cheering for her, spurring her onto the bronze medal.<\/p>\n

American\u00a0Melanie Margalis<\/strong>\u00a0(2:09.82), Japan’s\u00a0Runa Imai<\/strong>\u00a0(2:09.99), South Korea’s\u00a0Kim Seoyeong<\/strong>\u00a0(2:10.40) and Great Britain’s\u00a0Siobhan O’Connor<\/strong>\u00a0(2:10.41) also competed in the A-final.<\/p>\n

The big question in the race was Canadian\u00a0Sydney Pickrem<\/strong>, who was a medal favorite, getting out of the pool after the 50.\u00a0Swimming World\u00a0<\/em>will update if we find more information.<\/p>\n

This is Hosszu’s third straight World Title in the 200 IM and her fourth medal in the event in the World Championships. Her 2017 win adds on to her wins in 2013 and 2015 as well as her bronze in 2009.<\/p>\n
