Day two prelims of the 2017 FINA World Championships are now complete.\u00a0Katie Ledecky<\/strong> cruised to the top seed in the women’s 1500 free, while the rivalry between\u00a0Lilly King\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Yulia Efimova<\/strong> dove into action in the women’s 100 breast.<\/p>\n

Canada’s\u00a0Kylie Masse<\/strong> continued her reign as the top seed in the women’s 100 back, while\u00a0Xu Jiayu<\/strong> propelled to first in prelims of the men’s 100 back.<\/p>\n

Sun Yang<\/strong> started his quest for a second gold medal with a top showing in prelims of the 200 free.<\/p>\n

    Women’s 100 Back<\/h3>\n

    Canada’s\u00a0Kylie Masse<\/strong>, already the No. 1-ranked swimmer in the world for 2017, posted the fastest qualifying time in the women’s 100 back prelims at the World Championships.<\/p>\n

    Masse came in at 58.62, 0.18 ahead of hometown favorite and Olympic gold medalist\u00a0Katinka Hosszu<\/strong> (58.80). However, it’s unclear if Hosszu will swim this race in semi-finals as she also has to deal with the 200 IM final shortly after the 100 back semis would be scheduled.<\/p>\n

    Australia’s\u00a0Emily Seebohm<\/strong>, the defending World Champion, qualified third in 58.95, and then there was a big gap back to the fourth qualifier, Russia’s\u00a0Anastasia Fesikova\u00a0<\/strong>(59.58).<\/p>\n

    The two Americans in the field,\u00a0Olivia Smoliga\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Kathleen Baker<\/strong>, qualified fifth and sixth, respectively. Smoliga touched in 59.70, while Baker clocked in at 59.76.<\/p>\n

    Australia’s\u00a0Holly Barratt\u00a0<\/strong>(59.87), China’s\u00a0Chen Jie\u00a0<\/strong>(59.88), Great Britain’s\u00a0Kathleen Dawson<\/strong> (59.88) and Russia’s\u00a0Daria Ustinova\u00a0<\/strong>(59.90) also broke the 1:00-mark. Rounding out the semi-final field were Great Britain’s\u00a0Georgia Davies<\/strong> (1:00.24), the Czech Republic’s\u00a0Simona Baumrtova\u00a0<\/strong>(1:00.28), Canada’s\u00a0Hilary Caldwell\u00a0<\/strong>(1:00.37), the Netherlands’\u00a0Kira Toussaint<\/strong> (1:00.52), China’s\u00a0Fu Yuanhui<\/strong> (1:00.52) and Ukraine’s\u00a0Daryna Zevina\u00a0<\/strong>(1:00.59).<\/p>\n

    Men’s 100 Back<\/h3>\n

    China’s\u00a0Xu Jiayu<\/strong>, who earlier in 2017 missed the world record in the men’s 100 back by just one hundredth of a second, posted the top time out of prelims at the World Championships.<\/p>\n

    Xu finished in 52.77, while 2012 Olympic gold medalist\u00a0Matt Grevers\u00a0<\/strong>took second in 52.92. Grevers is returning to the international stage after missing the U.S. Olympic team last summer.<\/p>\n

    Russia’s\u00a0Grigory Tarasevich<\/strong>, who has already seen two of his Louisville teammates\u00a0(Mallory Comerford\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Kelsi Worrell<\/strong>) win gold in Budapest, qualified third in 53.18, one spot ahead of the American who won Olympic gold last summer and holds the world record,\u00a0Ryan Murphy<\/strong>. Murphy checked in at 53.26.<\/p>\n

    Japan’s\u00a0Ryosuke Irie\u00a0<\/strong>was fifth in 53.54, one hundredth ahead of Greece’s\u00a0Christou Apostolos\u00a0<\/strong>(53.55). Defending World Champion\u00a0Mitch Larkin\u00a0<\/strong>of Australia tied with Brazil’s\u00a0Guilherme Guido\u00a0<\/strong>for seventh in 53.72, while New Zealand’s\u00a0Corey Main<\/strong>\u00a0rounded out the sub-53-second swims, qualifying ninth in 53.97.<\/p>\n

    China’s\u00a0Li Guangyuan\u00a0<\/strong>(54.04), Italy’s\u00a0Matteo Milli<\/strong>\u00a0(54.17), Poland’s\u00a0Tomasz Polewka\u00a0<\/strong>(54.30), Ireland’s\u00a0Shane Ryan\u00a0<\/strong>(54.33), Israel’s\u00a0Yakor Toumarkin<\/strong>\u00a0(54.39), Canada’s\u00a0Javier Acevedo\u00a0<\/strong>(54.43) and Russia’s\u00a0Kliment Kolesnikov<\/strong>\u00a0(54.51) also got into the semi-finals.<\/p>\n

    Women’s 100 Breast<\/h3>\n

    Lilly King<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Yulia Efimova<\/strong>\u00a0will meet again in the women’s 100 breast at the World Championships, but that showdown won’t come until the final. The duo qualified first and second, respectively, in prelims, meaning they will swim in separate semi-final heats at night.<\/p>\n

    King, of the United States, won her heat in 1:05.20, while Russia’s Efimova took the next heat in 1:05.60. Efimova had to use a strong back half to catch and pass Lithuania’s\u00a0Ruta Meilutyte<\/strong>, who qualified third in 1:05.81.<\/p>\n

    Meilutyte was the 2012 Olympic gold medalist in this event but finished a disappointing seventh at the 2016 Olympics. She looks to be on the road to a bounce-back after posting the fourth-fastest time in the world this year in the heats.<\/p>\n

    The USA’s\u00a0Katie Meili<\/strong>, who won bronze in Rio, qualified fourth in 1:06.39, and joining Meili in the 1:06-range were Australia’s\u00a0Taylor McKeown<\/strong>\u00a0(1:06.64), Spain’s\u00a0Jessica Vall\u00a0<\/strong>(1:06.85) and China’s\u00a0Shi Jinglin<\/strong>\u00a0(1:06.94).<\/p>\n

    Canada’s\u00a0Rachel Nicol<\/strong>\u00a0was eighth in 1:07.10, just ahead of Australia’s\u00a0Jessica Hansen<\/strong>\u00a0(1:07.12), Japan’s\u00a0Satomi Suzuki<\/strong>\u00a0(1:07.20), Great Britain’s\u00a0Sarah Vasey\u00a0<\/strong>(1:07.20), Great Britain’s\u00a0Siobhan-Marie O’Connor\u00a0<\/strong>(1:07.33), Sweden’s\u00a0Jennie Johansson<\/strong>\u00a0(1:07.35) and Denmark’s\u00a0Rikke Moeller Pedersen<\/strong>\u00a0(1:07.39).<\/p>\n

    Italy’s\u00a0Arianna Castiglioni\u00a0<\/strong>and Canada’s\u00a0Kierra Smith\u00a0<\/strong>tied for 15th at 1:07.43 to earn the last two spots in the semi-finals.<\/p>\n

    Men’s 200 Free<\/h3>\n

    China’s\u00a0Sun Yang<\/strong>\u00a0captured his third straight World title in the men’s 400 free on night one in Budapest, and he led the way in the 200 free prelims on day two. Sun posted a time of 1:45.62, less than a second off his world top-ranked time of 1:45.78.<\/p>\n

    Great Britain’s\u00a0James Guy<\/strong>\u00a0qualified second in 1:46.22, and Russia’s\u00a0Mikhail Dovgaluk<\/strong>\u00a0was third in 1:46.47. American\u00a0Townley Haas<\/strong>\u00a0was fourth in 1:46.50, just ahead of the second Russian,\u00a0Aleksandr Krashnykh<\/strong>\u00a0(1:46.51).<\/p>\n

    Poland’s\u00a0Kacper\u00a0<\/strong>Majchrzak<\/strong>\u00a0took sixth in 1:46.58, ahead of Great Britain’s\u00a0Duncan Scott\u00a0<\/strong>(1:46.62) and Hungarian crowd favorite\u00a0Dominik Kozma<\/strong>\u00a0(1:46.83). The other American,\u00a0Blake Pieroni<\/strong>, was ninth in 1:46.88.<\/p>\n

    Lithuania’s\u00a0Danas Rapsys\u00a0<\/strong>took tenth in 1:46.88, and\u00a0Australia’s\u00a0Mack Horton<\/strong>\u00a0also broke 1:47, qualifying 11th in 1:46.97. Horton was the silver medalist behind Sun already in the 400 free.<\/p>\n

    Serbia’s\u00a0Velimir Stjepanovic<\/strong>\u00a0(1:47.05), South Africa’s\u00a0Myles Brown\u00a0<\/strong>(1:47.09), South Korea’s\u00a0Park Tae Hwan<\/strong>\u00a0(1:47.11) and Japan’s\u00a0Naito Ehara\u00a0<\/strong>(1:47.31) also secured spots in the final.<\/p>\n

    Egypt’s\u00a0Marwan Elkamash\u00a0<\/strong>and Austria’s\u00a0Felix Auboeck<\/strong>\u00a0tied for 16th at 1:47.40, setting up a potential swim-off to determine the final slot into the semi-finals. The time was a new Egyptian record for Elkamash.<\/p>\n

    \"men-200-free-prelims\"<\/p>\n

    Women’s 1500 Free<\/h3>\n

    To no one’s surprise, it was American\u00a0Katie Ledecky<\/strong>\u00a0who posted the top time of the morning in the women’s 1500 free. Ledecky cruised to a top showing of 15:47.54,\u00a0pulling for most of the race. Her World Record of 15:25.48 doubles as the Championship Record and will be the golden target for tomorrow’s final.<\/p>\n

    Mireia Belmonte<\/strong>\u00a0of Spain picked up the second place seed from heat three, stopping the clock at a qualifying time of 16:05.37. Belmonte’s time doesn’t sit too far off her Spanish National Record of 15:57.29.<\/p>\n

    China’s\u00a0Hou Yawen<\/strong>\u00a0qualified close on Belmonte’s heels, turning in a final time of 16:05.87.<\/p>\n

    Simona Quadarella<\/strong>\u00a0of Italy posted a fourth place finish of 16:07.08, followed by Hungary’s\u00a0Boglarka Kapas<\/strong>\u00a0and her time of 16:09.60.<\/p>\n

    Chile’s\u00a0Kristel Kobrich<\/strong>\u00a0(16:17.28), Liechenstein’s\u00a0Julia Hassler<\/strong>\u00a0(16:19.16), and Hungary’s\u00a0Ajna Kesely<\/strong>\u00a0(16:20.98) rounded out the top eight qualifiers.<\/p>\n
