Katie Ledecky\u00a0<\/strong>set a new championship record in the women’s 400 free prelims at the FINA World Championships, highlighting a fast first session at the Danube Arena in Budapest. Other top seeds included\u00a0Adam Peaty<\/strong>,\u00a0Sarah Sjostrom\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Katinka Hosszu<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    Women’s 100 Fly<\/h3>\n

    Sweden’s\u00a0Sarab Sjostrom\u00a0<\/strong>got her World Championships off to a rocking start when she challenged her own world record in the prelims of the women’s 100 fly. Sjostrom recorded a time of 55.96, faster than any other woman in history has ever gone, to secure the No. 1 seed into semi-finals.<\/p>\n

    Kelsi Worrell\u00a0<\/strong>of the United States qualified second in 56.44, improving to second in the world this year behind Sjostrom, and Australia’s\u00a0Emma McKeon<\/strong>\u00a0was third in 56.81, moving her to third in the world. Worrell’s time improved on her own lifetime best of 56.46 from the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials.<\/p>\n

    Japan’s\u00a0Rikako Ikee<\/strong>\u00a0took fourth in 57.45, while Canada’s\u00a0Penny Oleksiak<\/strong>, the World Junior Record-holder and Olympic silver medalist behind Sjostrom, was fifth in 57.51. Also finishing among the top eight were China’s\u00a0Zhang Yufei<\/strong>\u00a0(57.54), South Korea’s\u00a0An Sehyeon<\/strong>\u00a0(57.83) and Russia’s\u00a0Svetlana Chimrova\u00a0<\/strong>(57.85).<\/p>\n

    Italy’s\u00a0Ilaria Bianchi<\/strong>\u00a0took ninth in 57.98, and she will be joined in the semi-finals by Hungary’s\u00a0Liliana Szilagyi<\/strong>\u00a0(58.00), the USA’s\u00a0Sarah Gibson<\/strong>\u00a0(58.00), Germany’s\u00a0Aleina Schmidtke\u00a0<\/strong>(58.24), Belgium’s\u00a0Kimberly Buys\u00a0<\/strong>(58.45), China’s\u00a0Lu Ying\u00a0<\/strong>(58.51), Great Britain’s\u00a0Margaret Thomas\u00a0<\/strong>(58.65) and Australia’s\u00a0Brianne Throssell<\/strong>\u00a0(58.66).<\/p>\n

    Men’s 400 Free<\/h3>\n

    Austria’s\u00a0Felix Auboeck\u00a0<\/strong>was the surprising No. 1 seed in the first men’s event of the World Championships, posting a time of 3:44.19 to win his heat from lane seven and beat out 2012 Olympic gold medalist\u00a0Sun Yang<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    Auboeck’s effort made him the fourth-fastest performer in the world this year, while Sun, ranked No. 1 at 3:42.16, qualified second for China. The third seed went to Australia’s\u00a0David McKeon<\/strong>\u00a0in 3:45.56.<\/p>\n

    South Korea’s\u00a0Park Tae Hwan<\/strong>, the Olympic gold medalist in 2012, finished fourth in 3:45.57. Park missed the Olympic final in the event last summer but has rebounded considerably this year.<\/p>\n

    Australian Olympic gold medalist\u00a0Mack Horton<\/strong>\u00a0was fifth in 3:45.60, followed by Great Britain’s\u00a0James Guy\u00a0<\/strong>(3:45.64), Italy’s\u00a0Gabriele Detti\u00a0<\/strong>(3:45.72) and the USA’s\u00a0Zane Grothe\u00a0<\/strong>(3:46.14).<\/p>\n

    Women’s 200 IM<\/h3>\n

    Hungary’s\u00a0Katinka Hosszu<\/strong>\u00a0put up by far the fastest time in the prelims of the women’s 200 IM, coming in at 2:07.49 to finish more than 2.5 seconds ahead of anyone else in the qualifying round. She also chopped a second off her own world No. 1-ranked time.<\/p>\n

    Canada’s\u00a0Sydney Pickrem\u00a0<\/strong>qualified second for the semis in 2:10.14, while the USA’s\u00a0Madisyn Cox\u00a0<\/strong>was third in 2:10.16.<\/p>\n

    Great Britain’s\u00a0Siobhan-Marie O’Connor<\/strong>, the Olympic silver medalist in the event, took fourth in 2:10.42, and then there was a gap back to the fifth-place swimmer, Japan’s\u00a0Runa Imai\u00a0<\/strong>(2:11.15). Also making the top eight were Great Britain’s\u00a0Hannah Miley<\/strong>, South Korea’s\u00a0Seoyeong\u00a0Kim<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>(2:11.33) and Japan’s\u00a0Yui Ohashi<\/strong>\u00a0(2:11.44).<\/p>\n

    American\u00a0Melanie Margalis<\/strong>, who took fourth in the event in Rio, qualified ninth for the semi-finals in 2:11.47, and Canada’s\u00a0Erica Seltenreich-Hodgson\u00a0<\/strong>was 10th in 2:11.67. Also getting two semi-finalists, along with Japan, the U.S. and Canada, was Hungary, as\u00a0Zsuzsanna Jakobos\u00a0<\/strong>qualified 11th in 2:12.10.<\/p>\n

    Rounding out the final were Switzerland’s\u00a0Maria Ugolkova\u00a0<\/strong>(2:12.24), Russia’s\u00a0Yulia Efimova\u00a0<\/strong>(2:12.41), China’s\u00a0Ye Shiwen\u00a0<\/strong>(2:12.48), Brazil’s\u00a0Joanna Maranhao-Melo<\/strong>\u00a0(2:12.60) and Australia’s\u00a0Kotuku Ngawati\u00a0<\/strong>(2:13.06).<\/p>\n

    Men’s 50 Fly<\/h3>\n

    Ukraine’s\u00a0Andrii Govorov\u00a0<\/strong>earned the top seed into semi-finals in the men’s 50 fly, touching the wall in 22.92, winning his heat by five hundredths over the USA’s\u00a0Caeleb Dressel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    Dressel ended up qualifying second in 22.97, and Singapore’s\u00a0Joseph Schooling<\/strong>, the Olympic gold medalist in the 100 fly, was third in 23.05.<\/p>\n

    Great Britain’s\u00a0Ben Proud<\/strong>\u00a0was fourth in 23.11, and he was followed by the Brazilian duo of\u00a0Nicholas Santos\u00a0<\/strong>(23.24) and\u00a0Henrique Martins<\/strong>\u00a0(23.34).<\/p>\n

    Rounding out the semi-final field were the USA’s\u00a0Tim Phillips\u00a0<\/strong>(23.38), Hungary’s\u00a0Laszlo Cseh\u00a0<\/strong>(23.41), Poland’s\u00a0Konrad Czerniak<\/strong>\u00a0(23.42), Russia’s\u00a0Evgeny Sedov\u00a0<\/strong>(23.49), Italy’s\u00a0Piero Codia\u00a0<\/strong>(23.50), Serbia’s\u00a0Sebastian Sabo\u00a0<\/strong>(23.51), the Netherlands’\u00a0Mathys Goosen\u00a0<\/strong>(23.52), Ukraine’s\u00a0Andrii Khloptsov\u00a0<\/strong>(23.54) and the Belarus duo of\u00a0Yauhen Tsurkin<\/strong>\u00a0(23.55) and\u00a0Yahor Dodaleu\u00a0<\/strong>(23.56).<\/p>\n

    Women’s 400 Free<\/h3>\n

    In her first race of the week at the FINA World Championships,\u00a0Katie Ledecky<\/strong>\u00a0is already breaking records. She posted a time of 3:59.06 in the prelims of the 400 free, taking down her own championships record of 3:59.13 set two years ago on her way to gold in Kazan.<\/p>\n

    Ledecky’s American teammate\u00a0Leah Smith<\/strong>\u00a0comfortably took the second qualifying spot, touching the wall in 4:02.00, two seconds ahead of Australia’s\u00a0Ariarne Titmus<\/strong>. The 16-year-old Titmus swam a lifetime best time to grab the third seed in 4:04.26.<\/p>\n

    China’s\u00a0Li Bingjie<\/strong>, 15, was fourth in 4:04.94. Hungary’s home crowd will enjoy the final with two home favorites having qualified, fifth-place finisher\u00a0Boglarka Kapas\u00a0<\/strong>(4:05.93) and eight-place qualifier\u00a0Anja Kesely<\/strong>\u00a0(4:06.48). Others in the top eight included China’s\u00a0Yuhan Zhang\u00a0<\/strong>(4:06.21) and Russia’s\u00a0Veronika Popova\u00a0<\/strong>(4:06.40).<\/p>\n

    Men’s 100 Breast<\/h3>\n

    Great Britain’s\u00a0Adam Peaty\u00a0<\/strong>finished on top of his signature event, the men’s 100 breast, in prelims at the FINA World Championships. His time of 58.21, while well off his own world record, was faster than anyone else has ever swum.<\/p>\n

    United States swimmers finished in the next two spots going into the semi-finals as\u00a0Cody Miller\u00a0<\/strong>qualified in 59.14 and\u00a0Kevin Cordes\u00a0<\/strong>in 59.15. Brazil’s\u00a0Joao Gomes<\/strong>\u00a0was fourth in 59.24.<\/p>\n

    Italy’s\u00a0Nicolo Martinenghi\u00a0<\/strong>took fifth in 59.33, but the time was not a Junior World Record, as was listed. He was slightly quicker last month with a 59.23. Martinenghi was followed by Russia’s\u00a0Kirill Prigoda\u00a0<\/strong>(59.36), Great Britain’s\u00a0Ross Murdoch<\/strong>\u00a0(59.51) and Russia’s\u00a0Vsevolod Zanko\u00a0<\/strong>(59.56).<\/p>\n

    China’s\u00a0Yan Zibei\u00a0<\/strong>(59.61), Brazil’s\u00a0Felipe Lima<\/strong>\u00a0(59.62), Japan’s\u00a0Yasuhiro Koseki\u00a0<\/strong>(59.76), Lithuania’s\u00a0Giedrius Titenis\u00a0<\/strong>(59.79), Belarus’\u00a0Ilya Shymanovich<\/strong>\u00a0(59.84), Canada’s\u00a0Richard Funk\u00a0<\/strong>(59.89), Lithuania’s\u00a0Andrius Sidlauskas\u00a0<\/strong>(59.91) and\u00a0the Netherlands’\u00a0Arno Kaminga\u00a0<\/strong>(59.95) also qualified for the semis.<\/p>\n

    2012 Olympic gold medalist\u00a0Cameron van der Burgh<\/strong> was a surprising no-show in the heats.<\/p>\n

    Women’s 400 Free Relay<\/h3>\n

    The United States women took the top spot in the women’s 400 free relay prelims, buoyed by a 52.47 anchor split from\u00a0Mallory Comerford\u00a0<\/strong>in her FINA World Championships debut.\u00a0Lia Neal<\/strong>\u00a0(53.94),\u00a0Kelsi Worrell<\/strong>\u00a0(53.27),\u00a0Olivia Smoliga\u00a0<\/strong>(53.67) and Comerford\u00a0combined to post a time of 3:33.35 to finish almost one second ahead of the Netherlands.<\/p>\n

    The Dutch squad of\u00a0Maud Van Der Meer<\/strong>,\u00a0Femke Heemskerk<\/strong>,\u00a0Kim Busch<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Ranomi Kromowidjojo<\/strong>\u00a0qualified second in 3:34.26, and Australia’s\u00a0Emily Seebohm<\/strong>,\u00a0Madison Wilson<\/strong>,\u00a0Brittany Elmslie\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Shayna Jack<\/strong>\u00a0qualified third in 3:35.18.<\/p>\n

    The U.S. and Aussie squads figure to add big pieces in the final: The likes of\u00a0Simone Manuel\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Katie Ledecky\u00a0<\/strong>for the Americans,\u00a0Bronte Campbell\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Emma McKeon<\/strong>\u00a0for Australia.<\/p>\n

    Sweden, buoyed by\u00a0Sarah Sjostrom’s\u00a0<\/strong>impressive 52.19 split, qualified third in 3:35.50, and Canada, swimming without 100 free Olympic champion\u00a0Penny Oleksiak<\/strong>, was fifth in 3:35.85.<\/p>\n

    Also making the final were China3:37.02), Japan (3:37.46) and Denmark (3:38.29).<\/p>\n

    Men’s 400 Free Relay<\/h3>\n

    Brazil edged out Australia in the first heat of the men’s 400 free relay at the FINA World Championships and ended up holding on to secure the No. 1 seed for the final.\u00a0Gabriel Santos<\/strong>\u00a0(48.84),\u00a0Marcelo Chierighini<\/strong>\u00a0(47.75),\u00a0Cesar Cielo<\/strong>\u00a0(48.15) and\u00a0Bruno Fratus\u00a0<\/strong>(47.60) combined to touch in 3:12.34.<\/p>\n

    Australia’s\u00a0Cameron McEvoy<\/strong>,\u00a0Zac Incerti<\/strong>,\u00a0Alexander Graham<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Jack Cartwright\u00a0<\/strong>qualified second in 3:12.45, and the United States finished third in 3:12.90.\u00a0Blake Pieroni<\/strong>,\u00a0Michael Chadwick<\/strong>,\u00a0Zach Apple\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Townley Haas\u00a0<\/strong>swam on the American squad, and Pieroni and Haas appear likely to join\u00a0Nathan Adrian\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Caeleb Dressel<\/strong>\u00a0on the finals squad.<\/p>\n

    Italy qualified fourth in 3:12.26, and also making the final were Hungary (3:13.28), Russia (3:13.84), Japan (3:14.82) and Canada (3:14.88)<\/p>\n
