Sjostrom recorded a time of 55.96, faster than any other woman in history has ever gone, to secure the No. 1 seed into semi-finals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kelsi Worrell\u00a0<\/strong>of the United States qualified second in 56.44, improving to second in the world this year behind Sjostrom, and Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Emma McKeon<\/strong>\u00a0was third in 56.81, moving her to third in the world. Worrell&#8217;s time improved on her own lifetime best of 56.46 from the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials.<\/p>\n<p>Japan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Rikako Ikee<\/strong>\u00a0took fourth in 57.45, while Canada&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Penny Oleksiak<\/strong>, the World Junior Record-holder and Olympic silver medalist behind Sjostrom, was fifth in 57.51. The third seed went to Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>David McKeon<\/strong>\u00a0in 3:45.56.<\/p>\n<p>South Korea&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Park Tae Hwan<\/strong>, the Olympic gold medalist in 2012, finished fourth in 3:45.57. She also chopped a second off her own world No. 1-ranked time.<\/p>\n<p>Canada&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Sydney Pickrem\u00a0<\/strong>qualified second for the semis in 2:10.14, while the USA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Madisyn Cox\u00a0<\/strong>was third in 2:10.16.<\/p>\n<p>Great Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Siobhan-Marie O&#8217;Connor<\/strong>, the Olympic silver medalist in the event, took fourth in 2:10.42, and then there was a gap back to the fifth-place swimmer, Japan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Runa Imai\u00a0<\/strong>(2:11.15). Also making the top eight were Great Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Hannah Miley<\/strong>, South Korea&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Seoyeong\u00a0Kim<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>(2:11.33) and Japan&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Yui Ohashi<\/strong>\u00a0(2:11.44).<\/p>\n<p>American\u00a0<strong>Melanie Margalis<\/strong>, who took fourth in the event in Rio, qualified ninth for the semi-finals in 2:11.47, and Canada&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Erica Seltenreich-Hodgson\u00a0<\/strong>was 10th in 2:11.67. Also getting two semi-finalists, along with Japan, the U.S. and Canada, was Hungary, as\u00a0<strong>Zsuzsanna Jakobos\u00a0<\/strong>qualified 11th in 2:12.10.<\/p>\n<p>Rounding out the final were Switzerland&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Maria Ugolkova\u00a0<\/strong>(2:12.24), Russia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Yulia Efimova\u00a0<\/strong>(2:12.41), China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Ye Shiwen\u00a0<\/strong>(2:12.48), Brazil&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Joanna Maranhao-Melo<\/strong>\u00a0(2:12.60) and Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Kotuku Ngawati\u00a0<\/strong>(2:13.06).<\/p>\n<p><img over the USA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Caeleb Dressel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Dressel ended up qualifying second in 22.97, and Singapore&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Joseph Schooling<\/strong>, the Olympic gold medalist in the 100 fly, was third in 23.05.<\/p>\n<p>Great Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Ben Proud<\/strong>\u00a0was fourth in 23.11, and he was followed by the Brazilian duo of\u00a0<strong>Nicholas Santos\u00a0<\/strong>(23.24) and\u00a0<strong>Henrique Martins<\/strong>\u00a0(23.34).<\/p>\n<p>Rounding out the semi-final field were the USA&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Tim Phillips\u00a0<\/strong>(23.38), Hungary&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Laszlo Cseh\u00a0<\/strong>(23.41), Poland&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Konrad Czerniak<\/strong>\u00a0(23.42), Russia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Evgeny Free<\/h3>\n<p>In her first race of the week at the FINA World Championships,\u00a0<strong>Katie Ledecky<\/strong>\u00a0is already breaking records. She posted a time of 3:59.06 in the prelims of the 400 free, taking down her own championships record of 3:59.13 set two years ago on her way to gold in Kazan.<\/p>\n<p>Ledecky&#8217;s American teammate<strong>\u00a0Leah Smith<\/strong>\u00a0comfortably took the second qualifying spot, touching the wall in 4:02.00, two seconds ahead of Australia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Ariarne Titmus<\/strong>. The 16-year-old Titmus swam a lifetime best time to grab the third seed in 4:04.26.<\/p>\n<p>China&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Li Bingjie<\/strong>, 15, was fourth in 4:04.94. Hungary&#8217;s home crowd will enjoy the final with two home favorites having qualified, fifth-place finisher\u00a0<strong>Boglarka Kapas\u00a0<\/strong>(4:05.93) and eight-place qualifier\u00a0<strong>Anja Kesely<\/strong>\u00a0(4:06.48).
