Maglione defeated challenger\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/paolo-barelli-releases-manifesto-in-campaign-for-fina-president\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Paolo Barelli<\/strong><\/a> by a vote count of 258 to 77 at the FINA Congress in Budapest.<\/p>\n<p>Barelli, the President of the European Swimming Federation (LEN), had been very focal in criticizing FINA&#8217;s leadership in recent months, and he actually <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/court-of-arbitration-for-sport-rules-in-favor-of-fina-against-paolo-barelli\/\" target=\"_blank\">challenged FINA in the Court of Arbitration for Sport<\/a>, citing conflicts of interest.<\/p>\n<p>Barelli had received the support of several European countries during the campaign, but most federations on other continents (including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/united-states-aquatic-sports-supports-the-re-election-of-maglione-as-fina-president\/\" target=\"_blank\">United States Aquatic Sports<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/cana-endorses-julio-maglione-for-third-term-as-fina-president\/\" target=\"_blank\">CANA, the African Swimming Federation<\/a>, had backed the incumbent, Maglione.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Julio Maglione\u00a0has been re-elected as President of FINA for a third term.
