He is the defending European champion in the 25k event, having won the race last year in Hoorn. Reymond&#8217;s win today marks France&#8217;s fourth gold medal in these championships.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the race being five hours long, the finish was still extremely close. Reymond only finished four one hundredths of a second ahead of second place finisher,\u00a0<strong>Matteo Furlan<\/strong> of Italy. Furlan, who earned bronze in 2015, was second in 5:02.47. Russia&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Evgenii Drattcev<\/strong> rounded out the podium, taking third in 5:02.49.<\/p>\n<p>The 2015 world champion in this event,\u00a0<strong>Simone Ruffini<\/strong> of Italy, finished just outside the podium in fourth place in 5:02.53. American\u00a0<strong>Chip Peterson<\/strong> finished fifth in 5:03.43.<\/p>\n<p>Sixth place went to Hungary&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Gergely Gyurta<\/strong> with a time of 5:04.00.\u00a0<strong>Vitaliy Khudyakov<\/strong> of Kazakhstan took seventh in 5:04.36, while Russia&#8217;s <strong>Sergey Bolshakov<\/strong> was eighth in 5:04.49.<\/p>\n<p>The second American,\u00a0<strong>Simon Lamar<\/strong>, as well as Hungary&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Kristof Rasovszky\u00a0<\/strong>and France&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Logan Fontaine<\/strong> did not finish the race.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Another French swimmer,\u00a0Axel Reymond, won gold in the men&#8217;s 25k open water at the 2017 FINA World Swimming Championships.
