For the first time in his career at next week’s FINA World Championships,\u00a0Chase Kalisz<\/strong> will swim an event besides only the 400 IM.\u00a0He will contend for a medal in the 200 IM, but it’s only in the 400 IM, the event where he first made a name for himself, that Kalisz will challenge for gold.<\/p>\n

Ever since the Olympics, when he could not catch\u00a0Kosuke Hagino<\/strong> on the final 50 in the 400 IM final, Kalisz has been dominant in the 400 IM. He broke 4:10 in-season for the first time ever, and then at U.S. Nationals, swimming with a huge lead, he posted a world-leading time of 4:06.99.<\/p>\n

Kalisz will face his challengers in Budapest, most notably Japanese Olympic gold medalist\u00a0Kosuke Hagino<\/strong>, his countryman and two-time defending World Champion\u00a0Daiya Seto<\/strong> and Hungarian\u00a0David Verraszto<\/strong>, who missed the Olympic final but currently ranks second in the world at 4:07.47.<\/p>\n

But so far this year, none have been more impressive than Kalisz.<\/p>\n
