At the 2016 Olympic Games, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/sharon-van-rouwendaal-dominates-10k-open-water-race-wins-olympic-gold\/\">Muller finished second<\/a>, but she was disqualified for obstructing Italian\u00a0<strong>Rachele Bruni<\/strong> at the finish.\u00a0Despite a tight race today, Muller seemed to avoid such contact and once again emerged on top.<\/p>\n<p>The battle for second place was extremely close. With three swimmers listed as finishing in 2:00.17,\u00a0<strong>Samatha Arevalo<\/strong> of Ecuador earned the silver medal behind Muller. Italian\u00a0<strong>Arianna Bridi<\/strong> and Brazilian<strong> Ana Marcela Cunha<\/strong>, the other two swimmers who finished in 2:00.17, tied for third place to round out the podium.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rachele Bruni<\/strong>, Bridi&#8217;s Italian teammate, was fifth in 2:00.21, just ahead of American\u00a0<strong>Haley Anderson<\/strong>, who was sixth in 2:00.25.<\/p>\n<p>German\u00a0<strong>Finnia Wunram<\/strong> and Hungarian\u00a0<strong>Anna Olasz<\/strong> finished seventh and eighth in 2:00.26 and 2:00.28, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>The second American and this year&#8217;s national champion,\u00a0<strong>Ashley Twichell<\/strong>, finished tenth in 2:00.41.\u00a0<strong>Sharon van Rouwendaal<\/strong> of the Netherlands, the 2016 Olympic gold medalist, finished seventeenth (2:01.59).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>France&#8217;s\u00a0Aurelie Muller won the women&#8217;s 10k open water world title at the 2017 FINA World Swimming Championships with a time of 2:00.13.
