Of course, <strong>Penny Oleksiak<\/strong> and co. did not just end the streak\u2014they shattered it.<\/p>\n<p>Before the Rio Olympics, an Olympic medal for the Canadian women seemed like a possibility, but by no means a certainty. The team ended up winning six, more than any other women\u2019s team aside from the United States. Two of those medals came on relays, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/simone-manuel-penny-oleksiak-tie-for-gold-in-historic-100-free-final\/\" target=\"_blank\">Oleksiak tied for gold in the women\u2019s 100 free<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A young, under-the-radar squad turned itself into a swimming powerhouse in Brazil. How can it not? What she accomplished in Rio was downright historic.<\/p>\n<p>Her gold medal was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/for-simone-manuel-and-penny-oleksiak-a-shared-gold-and-intertwined-history\/\" target=\"_blank\">first for a Canadian female swimmer since <strong>Anne Ottenbrite<\/strong><\/a> won the 200 breast at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. Her efforts at the Olympics won her the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/penny-oleksiak-named-canadas-top-athlete-wins-lou-marsh-trophy\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lou Marsh Trophy<\/a>, awarded to the country\u2019s best athlete in any sport, over the likes of hockey star <strong>Sidney Crosby<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>But she\u2019s just a piece\u00a0of the impressive roster Canada is sending\u00a0to Budapest, and none on the team have been more impressive this year than <strong>Kylie Masse<\/strong>. Masse tied for bronze in the 100 back last year in Rio but took her swimming to a whole new level at Canada\u2019s World Championship Trials back in April, when she blasted a 58.21 in the 100 back, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/2017-canadian-swimming-trials-day-one-finals-live-recap\/\" target=\"_blank\">just nine hundredths off the world record<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Almost every women\u2019s event on the program features a Canadian who should at least challenge for a spot in the World Champs finals, and Swimming Canada High Performance Director <strong>John Atkinson<\/strong> calls the team deeper than the one in Rio.<\/p>\n<p>The list of heavy-hitters includes <strong>Hilary Caldwell<\/strong>, the bronze medalist in the 200 back in Rio, as well as breaststroker <strong>Rachel<\/strong> <strong>Nicol<\/strong>, versatile veteran <strong>Katerine Savard<\/strong>, sprinter <strong>Sandrine Mainville<\/strong> and IMers <strong>Sydney Pickrem<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Mary-Sophie<\/strong> <strong>Harvey<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Face of the Team<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Oleksiak\u2019s star was established in Rio, but the now-17-year-old will have to keep producing results to be considered one of the best swimmers in the world. Right now, I can\u2019t really control what Sarah\u2019s going to do, but I can control what I\u2019m going to do, so I\u2019m just going to race as fast as I can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The expectations that come with being an Olympic gold medalist just don\u2019t bother Oleksiak.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>\u201cI think people will always have expectations for me, and people will always try and tell me their expectations to, I guess, motivate me,\u201d she said. \u201cBut I don\u2019t pay attention to other people\u2019s expectations. Honestly, I don\u2019t even care. I\u2019m definitely trying to reach my own expectations, and right now, they\u2019re to go around my best times, maybe under them.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Just swimming around her best times again in the 100 free and certainly the 100 fly will have Oleksiak right back in medal territory, and she will front all three medal-contending women\u2019s relays.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>This Year\u2019s Scorcher<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>For all that the 21-year-old Masse has become as a swimmer\u2014a\u00a0World title-favorite in the 100 back and a legitimate medal contender in the 200-meter distance as well\u2014it\u2019s worth reflecting on where she came from as recently as three years ago.<\/p>\n<p>While Oleksiak was the teenage prodigy, Masse ranked 201st in the world in the 100 back in 2014 with a top time of 1:02.70. Photo Scott Grant\" width=\"375\" height=\"282\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-193754\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo Courtesy: Scott Grant\/Swimming Canada<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In her international debut in 2015, she won gold in the 100 back at the World University Games, breaking 1:00 for the first time (59.97) to knock off more-heralded and more-experienced Americans <strong>Elizabeth Pelton<\/strong> and <strong>Rachel<\/strong> <strong>Bootsma<\/strong>. She first broke 59 at the Olympics, when she won the bronze medal.<\/p>\n<p>Now, the spotlight is on her, a legitimate favorite getting international attention alongside the likes of <strong>Katinka Hosszu, Emily Seebohm<\/strong> and <strong>Kathleen Baker<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>So, naturally, Masse is doing all she can to ignore all that.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>\u201cI\u2019m honestly trying really not to focus on that and really just focus on what I can control in my own race and what I\u2019ve been working on this entire year and last year after the Olympics,\u201d Masse said. \u201cJust focusing on the skills I need to execute in my race and see what I can do.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So, yes, Masse has been distracting herself from talk of World titles and world record by thinking about her start, a key point of emphasis over the last several months. That\u2019s not some new practice she\u2019s adopted to deal with the pressure of her current situation\u2014it\u2019s just who she is.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the main thing she does well is she doesn\u2019t let what other people are doing get to her,\u201d Caldwell said of her fellow backstroker. \u201cI remember at Trials after her morning swim that was just this incredible time, almost set the world record in the 100, and I was, \u2018Oh, are you going to break that world record tonight?\u2019 and she was like, \u2018Oh, I don\u2019t know\u2014what is the world record?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Masse, ignorance is bliss, and if that tunnel vision helps her drop another tenth in the 100 back, she will have a world record to her name.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Canadian Swagger<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>At the age of 26, Caldwell is by no means \u201cold,\u201d but she\u2019s one of just three\u00a0Canadian women on this year&#8217;s World Champs team that swam at the\u00a02012 Olympics in London. He won a medal in the 1500 free at the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games and at four straight World Championships from 2009 to 2015.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cRyan\u2019s mental stamina always impressed me. From the start to the end of a swim meet, he was always so professional, so engaged, and he got the job done, no matter what,\u201d Caldwell said. \u201cHis professionalism and his poise under pressure was something that we all try to emulate.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In Budapest, there will be pressure for the Canadians, particularly on the women\u2019s side, to prove that their Olympic efforts were no fluke, and that burden of being favored to win medals is something few Canadians aside from Cochrane have dealt with in a long time.<\/p>\n<p>But no great athletes deal with success by dwelling on the stress they are under to repeat such successes. Instead, these Canadian women are channeling what happened last summer into confidence for this time around.
