{"id":265482,"date":"2017-07-10T03:44:16","date_gmt":"2017-07-10T10:44:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=265482"},"modified":"2017-07-10T03:52:07","modified_gmt":"2017-07-10T10:52:07","slug":"ioc-defers-rio-organizers-request-to-pay-40-million-olympic-debt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ioc-defers-rio-organizers-request-to-pay-40-million-olympic-debt\/","title":{"rendered":"IOC Defers Rio Organizers&#8217; Request to Pay $40 Million Olympic Debt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After an IOC executive board meeting in Lausanne on July 9, the Committee has deferred the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/rio-organizers-look-to-ioc-for-help-settling-40-million-debt\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rio organizers&#8217; request<\/a> of $35-$40 million to offset the 2016 Olympic Games.<\/p>\n<p>According to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/sports\/olympics\/2017\/07\/09\/ioc-balks-at-helping-rio-with-35-40-million-olympic-debt\/103560604\/\" target=\"_blank\">USA Today<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>via the<em> Associated Press<\/em>, the IOC has already contributed a record-breaking $1.53 billion to the 2016 Games. They are not contractually obligated to help\u00a0because\u00a0host cities and countries are responsible for any remaining post-Olympic debt.<\/p>\n<p>The Committee has put off\u00a0the request at this time, stating that more knowledge is needed before any decisions can be made.<\/p>\n<p>In June, an Associated Press analysis revealed that the overall <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/cost-of-rio-olympics-estimated-at-13-1-billion-us\/\" target=\"_blank\">cost for the Rio Olympics<\/a> was approximately $13.1 billion. At this time, less than ten percent of the athlete-dorms in the Olympic Village have been rented out and most of the athletic complexes remain vacant. A subway line, renovated port and high-speed bus lines have been retained.<\/p>\n<p>Among Rio&#8217;s greatest recession in decades, the government cannot provide any more aid as they gave millions of dollars to bailout the Paralympic Games.\u00a0According to the IOC statement,\u00a0there had also been &#8220;an exceptional effort to significant cost savings and additional financial undertakings by all the Olympic stakeholders, which amounted to hundreds of millions of dollars.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, any further help would anger the public employees who\u00a0continue to get paid late as a result of the debt.<\/p>\n<p>With the upcoming meetings in Lausanne on July 11 and 12, the IOC is looking to move forward, not back.
