{"id":264768,"date":"2021-08-16T08:00:39","date_gmt":"2021-08-16T15:00:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=264768"},"modified":"2021-08-16T11:01:46","modified_gmt":"2021-08-16T18:01:46","slug":"ian-thorpe-believes-his-400-freestyle-world-record-could-have-been-faster","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ian-thorpe-believes-his-400-freestyle-world-record-could-have-been-faster\/","title":{"rendered":"Ian Thorpe Believes His 400 Freestyle World Record Could Have Been Faster"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Ian Thorpe Believes His 400 Freestyle World Record Could Have Been Faster<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ian Thorpe<\/strong> once revealed his biggest regret in swimming, and it is not what you would expect.\u00a0Thorpe has admitted that the biggest regret in his swimming career was not swimming all out in the 400 freestyle final at the 2002 Commonwealth Games. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ian-thorpe-zoe-baker-crack-world-marks-on-day-one-of-commonwealth-games\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thorpe broke the World Record in that event at 3:40.08<\/a>, a time that stood until 2009 when Germany&#8217;s <strong>Paul Biedermann<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/fina-world-championships-swimming-flash-germanys-paul-biedermann-edges-ian-thorpes-world-record-in-400-free\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">broke the record at the World Championships in Rome<\/a>. He said if he had realized at the time that he was going so fast, he would have gone a little harder in the final.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did a 400 swim where I broke the world record in Manchester and I just didn\u2019t realize that I was going as fast as I was,\u201d Thorpe said. \u201cAnd I knew that I was swimming seven events at that competition and had I known I was going as well as I was I would have tried harder. I had no idea until I was looking up at the board.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If he had given a little more effort in that race in 2002, Thorpe may still have the world record some 19 years later. This was also not the first time someone &#8220;accidentally&#8221; broke a world record. <strong>Simon Burnett<\/strong> revealed in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=AYgOgyUh3ec\">2010 interview<\/a> that he backed off in the 200-yard freestyle final at the 2006 NCAAs to save himself for later races. Burnett posted the fastest time in the event (1:31.20), a mark which stood for 10 years. <strong>Katie Ledecky\u00a0<\/strong>also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/katie-ledecky-1500-freestyle-world-record-swim\/\">revealed she &#8220;accidentally&#8221; broke the 1500 world record<\/a> in the prelims at the
