ANDERSON, South Carolina. A USA Swimming team has taken over a public pool that was preparing to close and in turn threaten the team's future.<\/p>\n

The Anderson Swim Club has signed a four-month lease with the owners of the property, the Anderson Public School District. The lease allows the team to handle operations of the Sheppard Swim Center and be the facility's sole tenant. The building was to close on January 30 after the city cited an operating deficit of $334,000, leaving the age-group team without a place to train for the upcoming state meet.<\/p>\n

If the pool were to close, the town of Anderson would have been without a public pool.<\/p>\n

Michael Beckish, the team's booster club president and father of three swimmers, told Swimming World<\/i> today that the lease will allow the team time to discover how much money is needed to run the pool. All costs associated with operating the facility will fall on the Anderson Swim Club, and the only cost the Anderson Public School District will pay is insurance. The team has an option to extend their lease after four months, Beckish said.<\/p>\n

Beckish added that the team is organizing fundraisers to help fray operational costs, including a Swim-A-Thon. Anyone who wishes to donate to the team can send a check to:<\/p>\n
