HOUSTON, Texas, February 10. NO. 4 Texas (7-2) claimed 13 of 17 events en route to a 77-60 victory over Houston Wednesday evening in its annual Sprint for the Cure meet with the Cougars.<\/p>\n
"This was a great team effort," UT assistant coach Jim Henry said. "A lot of these ladies won events tonight and took advantage of their opportunities. We had great attention to detail. Our starts and turns have been our main focus, and we did an outstanding job with those."<\/p>\n
The meet traditionally presents the Horns and Cougars opportunities to race events contested in unconventional distances. UT opened with a win in the 100-yard medley relay, where freshmen Alex Hooper and Catherine Wagner, sophomore Leah Reinhardt and senior Brie Powers finished in 48.30. Texas freshman Melanie McClure followed with a win in the 300-yard freestyle in 2:54.60.<\/p>\n
The Horns picked up their next win in the 75 backstroke, where Hooper led the way in 41.12. Wagner added another win for Texas in the 75 breaststroke, where the Houston native finished in 47.69. Powers followed to lead a one-two Texas finish in the 25 freestyle at 11.22.<\/p>\n
UT freshman Ellen Lobb, another Houston product, took the win in the 50 butterfly in 25.48. UT's Diana Wilcox and Samantha Holland followed with third- and fourth-place finishes in the abbreviated one-meter diving session. The Horns added another win in the 150 freestyle relay, where junior Becca Tomlin, McClure and Powers finished in 1:13.16. Hooper posted a winning time of 26.08 in the 50 backstroke, where McClure took second in 27.68. <\/p>\n
Wagner added a win in the 50 breaststroke at 30.07, and senior Katie Hamilton notched a win in the 75 butterfly in 41.39. Lobb claimed the 50 freestyle in 23.47 before Wagner tacked on another win in the 100 IM in 59.10. Lobb teamed up with Powers, Tomlin and McClure to win the 100 freestyle relay in 43.14. Texas also took second in the three-meter synchronized diving event with 132.30 points. <\/p>\n
Texas now turns its attention to the postseason. The Longhorns will host the Big 12 Championships (Feb. 23-26), the NCAA Zone "D" Diving meet (March 11-13) and the NCAA Championships at UT's Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. <\/p>\n
