IOWA CITY, Iowa, February 5. OLYMPIAN Kelci Bryant (Chatham, Ill.\/Minneapolis, Minn.), who won the 1-meter title earlier in the week, finished atop the standings following the women's 3-meter semifinals, and Olympian David Boudia (Noblesville, Ind.\/West Lafayette, Ind.) led the men's 10-meter quarterfinals Friday at the USA Diving Winter National Championships. <\/p>\n
The top 12 divers from the women's semifinals advance to Sunday's finals, and the top 18 divers from the men's quarterfinals move on to the semifinals, also set for Sunday.
\nBryant posted a combined score of 718.90 points over the quarterfinals and semifinals to earn the top qualifying score. Scores won't carry over to the finals for the purpose of declaring the national champion, but cumulative scores from the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals will be used to determine the divers who represent the U.S. at the AT&T USA Diving Grand Prix in May and ultimately the FINA World Championships in July.<\/p>\n
Olympian Christina Loukas (Riverwoods, Ill.\/The Woodlands, Texas) qualified second with 709.30 points, highlighted by a record 387.90 points in the semifinals. Kassidy Cook (The Woodlands, Texas) was third with 689.55 points, and Abby Johnston (Upper Arlington, Ohio\/Durham, N.C.) scored a combined 660.95 points for fourth.
\nIn the men's 10-meter quarterfinals, Boudia scored 542.95 points to take a 35-point edge into Sunday's semifinals. Like the 3-meter event, scores from the quarterfinals and semifinals will be combined to determine the 12 finalists. Nick McCrory (Chapel Hill, N.C.\/Durham, N.C.), who won the synchronized 10-meter title with Boudia on Tuesday, scored 507.35 points to finish second. Olympian Thomas Finchum (Indianapolis, Ind.) was third at 501.85, and Drew Livingston (The Woodlands, Texas\/Austin, Texas) with 486.90 points. <\/p>\n
The four divers with the highest cumulative scores from the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals who also meet the degree of difficulty requirements will be named to the AT&T Grand Prix team and will go on to phase two of the selection process for the 2011 World Championships team. <\/p>\n
The USA Diving Winter National Championships continue through Sunday, February 6. Saturday's competition starts at noon and features three finals: men's 3-meter, women's 10-meter and men's synchronized 3-meter. <\/p>\n
